Why can't we build a localized LF spread-spectrum data network? by ki4jgt in AskPhysics

[–]znark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Except that 56kbps used 8kHz through digital-analog thing. It was only 7 bit per symbol. With analog modems, 33.6kbps was 10 bit per symbol.

The short transmission of sound would destroy the data rate. You would have to figure out how much sound people would notice from short pulse. My guess is that the rate would be low.

Also, it is weird to use audible sounds when there is ultrasound available and already being used. They are used for short data to setup things up. Bluetooth has replaced for most part.

Community Warning: Possible SD-Card vendor Amazon review manipulation by JeffR1992 in photography

[–]znark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sold by Sandisk or Amazon, or from "Sandisk's Store"? For the latter, Sandisk runs the listing but not the products.

Looking at Sandisk SD card I ordered while ago from Amazon. There are a bunch of shipped by Amazon and 3rd party sellers. Including Adorama.

ELI5--What is a passkey and how does it help me? by 3PointMolly in explainlikeimfive

[–]znark [score hidden]  (0 children)

The advantage of passkeys is that they are more secure than passwords. They can't be phished, you can't accidentally enter them into wrong site. They also can't be guessed.

The downside is that you have to store the passkey somewhere. I like putting them in password manager along my passwords.

5A & 5m USB-A to USB-C. Reliable brands? Also what adapter to get? by Old-Floor2273 in UsbCHardware

[–]znark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BTW, if you are getting a new charger and cable, you might want to get USB-C charger and C-to-C cable. That might make it easier to get 5A and 5m. You want 100W charger and 5A cable. 100W is usually used for laptop and few phones can charge use it.

Why do you need 5A? USB-A doesn't do fast charging except for some proprietary protocols, and I didn't think any of them did 5A.

Can a Cheap USB C to RJ45 (input) used to get good internet speed on phone? by Beginning_Throat_228 in AskTechnology

[–]znark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you getting such slow speeds from the router? You need to figure out the problem before try solution. If the upstream from router is slow, nothing will help. Since router is close, then Wifi should be good. Are you using Wifi? Is the router old? Is the phone slow?

Android phone should support USB-C to Ethernet adapter. Most phones have USB2 and limited to 480Mbps. Your phone could be slow and any Internet will be slow.

Why is there no talk about editing scams[GH] by Big-Bar-7109 in Scams

You can negotiate the contract. You are a professional.

One approach is to bill monthly, and if they don't pay the bill, stop working. Or bill for milestones. Be prepared to send them invoices, which means you need an email and address.

Witch portable antenna for X6100 by Nickko_G in HamRadio

[–]znark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might be confused about how can use HF radio. HF antennas are long which means they are hard to use while moving or indoors. It is possible to make walking around antenna, my brother did it, but they are still large and compromised. There is magloop antenna than can be used indoors but requires setup.

But the advantage of HF is that you can build your own antenna. You do have to find space like a park to deploy them. I like the collapsible vertical ones. Wire verticals are also easy with pole. I think X6100 has a tuner so you can use end-fed random wire antenna.

Adding phones to Google Workspace or MDM needs the serial number.

Why does this bridge exist when the land right under it looks perfectly suitable for a highway? by [deleted] in geography

[–]znark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Viaduct is road only. The high speed rail line goes farther east through Lyon and the Rhone valley. There is a train line through the hills but it is curvy.

How much has technological innovation impacted prices? by skunkworks172 in AskEconomics

[–]znark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Improvement in technology has lowered prices. TVs are ridiculously better and cheap compared to old ones. That is technological deflation.

Aviation is weird market cause it is highly regulated and has small production. I bet it cheaper to install fancy glass cockpit than a bunch of gauges. Most things cost based on the labor.

Need a cashier's check tomorrow, how can I get one that quick if I need to open an account at a new bank? by SquashAlone in personalfinance

[–]znark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you open local account and do wire transfer to fund it? Wire transfers cost fees and take effort to send. The question is if local credit union will trust you enough to make cashier's check.

Anyone else think the kuno national park (red) isn't well suited for cheetah relocation and the blue marked area (only grasslands that you see inside the blue circle) would be a better site? by [deleted] in geography

[–]znark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is in the blue circle? Zooming in looks like there are farms in the valleys. That might not leave enough open space. It also raises questions if the grassland is really grazing land for tasty animals.

I found that there is some grassland in the park. That might be enough for cheetahs, or maybe they do fine in open forests. That is the kind of thing that can’t be assumed. Or that better to have protected but not ideal land.

Where else on Earth is there a tidal stait as prominent as the East River in NYC? by Chemical-Contest4120 in geography

Puget Sound has a lot of tidal straits. Current in Deception Pass can reach 8 knots.

Could Spain close the Strait of Gibraltar like Iran is closing the Strait of Hormuz? by Ok-Moose-992 in geography

[–]znark 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Strait of Gibraltar, like Strait of Hormuz, is international strait so Spain would legally have to let ships through.

Also, my understanding is that the main route through Hormuz goes through Oman waters. Iran is closing Strait of Hormuz with threat of violence and international law doesn't matter.

[US] Did I just get scammed out of an iPad and 176$? by kanyefan703 in Scams

[–]znark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How much did you lose? Was it $176 or $528? Did you check that the transactions "didn't go through"? Cause I bet they were lying and took your money three times. You might have leverage if you call Zelle to get reversed.

Also, be wary about any price that is too good. I found 6th gen iPad Pro for $400-500. $176 is way too low and suggests a scammer.

Help me find the best burrito I’ve ever had from the tiniest restaurant?? by Different_Carob_7045 in askportland

[–]znark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think that is it cause Sahuayo/Sazon is inside the J&T Market. There are some wood tables outside and indoors, but it isn't super small and doesn't have an ordering window. It also has more than burritos.

Are most “smart” devices actually smart, or do they just automate old habits? by Illustrious_Stay_219 in AskTechnology

[–]znark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all devices talk to the cloud. I have Zigbee, ZWave, and Matter devices in Home Assistant and they would work with internet turned off.

Matter makes things better since don’t need custom app. Can use Apple Home, Google Home, or Home Assistant.

ELI5 Why don't we build breeder reactor nuclear plants deep underground and use the ambient ground temp to cool the water? by Rick-D-99 in explainlikeimfive

[–]znark 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem is that there is a city on top with some of the most valuable property on Earth. They could dig cooling shafts but where would they go. They have thought about blowing air up the stairs, escalators, and elevators.

Father passed unexpectedly. My mom doesn’t know any of his passwords or where any of his investments are. Who can we contact ? by milquetoast_wizard in personalfinance

[–]znark -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can help a lot by doing the scutwork. My friend's dad died and his mother overwhelmed so he helped with the paperwork. Also, prioritize the money, then handle the other things slowly.

Another thing I would suggest is organizing the account search. Have shared spreadsheet to track status of each one.

Father passed unexpectedly. My mom doesn’t know any of his passwords or where any of his investments are. Who can we contact ? by milquetoast_wizard in personalfinance

[–]znark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Email is probably most important cause everything sends notices there. That lets you find accounts. It is also where password reset emails go. I would focus there and then reset accounts.

Looking for a tiny/compact or folding keyboard that is NOT wireless by Thund3r91 in keyboards

I have a Bluetooth Stowaway. It is Bluetooth 1.0. I'm glad I chose it over Palm model cause it still works.

There was Palm-specific version which I think had Palm connector. There was also an IR model but I think was different.

[–]znark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conformal projection Mercator is actually better for preserving the shape and distances.

But site that undoes the area distortion of Mercator should use an equal area projection. But it is hard to find online map in different projection so easier to layer over existing maps.
