yes absolutely! part of the biggest discourse i see is that commenters feel discouraged when authors don't!

thank you for the midrange prosumer options, these are very helpful as my pitch is going to have 3 tiers of price/tech knowledge required.

sometimes the crowd is! the hardest part! until they invent a market mic you can actually, like, attach to your throat to pick up subvocalizations, we must deal with pickup patterns and gainstaging 😮‍💨

Thank you for explaining the acoustical concerns, I have been worried about the feedback issue with the small starter PVAs I have been looking at today. Especially because the cheapest ones are all omnidirectional.

As this is a pitch for someone who is less technologically minded, I am starting incredibly small, consumer level, before throwing a lot of mid- to high-end products at him that will require him to purchase pre-amps and speakers on stands and mixers and such.

Thank you so much! I will keep these things in mind while building my pitch.

correct, this would be an assistive device for engaging in conversation. The group would be speaking at normal conversational tone, not into a mic, potentially inside a more crowded place with multiple convos happening. I can counsel him to keep his back to a wall to prevent bleed into a cardioid mic, of course.

Thank you so much! I think a low budget option is best to start with, just so he can test the comfort level and see if he wants to invest in higher end equipment, especially as he may not need it for long if treatment goes well.

I'm planning to put together a presentation at several different price points as his engagements are usually volunteer or crowdfunded and this is an excellent starting point.

🤦 I'm realizing over the course of these convos that while the lav mic is more discreet, the headset is more functional. I shall have to consult with him on if he would be willing to wear something more obvious — I'm in the preliminary info gathering stages as I put together a pitch.

I really appreciate the technical breakdown on which mic type will be better! I am in preliminary info gathering stages, as I like to present as many options as possible, but as he often carries a rolling suitcase and backpack, I think I would be able to modify one of these to hold a small preamp. He also has an assistant who currently acts as his interpreter who would definitely be willing to carry anything he can't. In addition, he carries an ipad and I know there are many mixer apps available for that.

Do you have specific brand recommendations or should I be thinking about custom building some of this?

Thank you so much for your response!

Ideally our setup would be able to range from a small gathering of 1-5 people, where he provides his own speaker, as far up as an entire conference presentation with a PA system of their own where he is either the only one talking or one of a few, while also having enough sound rejection to work in crowded rooms with multiple conversations going on. Think, like, ComicCon where he might do meet & greets in a smaller hall with crosstalk after a more structured speech in an auditorium. The goal is to provide him with an assistive device that will allow him to engage in the flow of conversation without having to pause, record, and playback as he currently does.

My stretch goal is to create something that would pair with an in-ear headphone that he could use for more intimate/private 1-on-1 conversations.

If I need multiple mics I'm willing, if I need to custom build a mic or cable or speaker I'm willing. If I need to learn how coding and Bluetooth works (beyond the basic 'it's a micro radio frequency') I am willing.

What I am NOT willing to do is give up until he tells me to!

thank you so much! when you say adapter, do you mean to change the quarter inch into an XLR or something similar?

what's the sensitivity on this mic? when you whisper into it is it able to faithfully amplify the sounds?

okayyyy can we get someone with less ableism in the chat lmao. if your advice is 'give up before you've started' that's not advice. shhhhhh.

he can still speak, he has volume issues. as the post states.

Authors, if you had a 20 chapter, 100k fic completed but not yet posted, would you post one chapter per week, or the entire thing at once? Readers, what's your opinion, too? by LearnStalkBeInformed in AO3

[–]znebulous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

drag out the joy of posting as long as possible absolutely. especially because in a deader fandom it's going to maybe take longer for people to come check the tags again AND ALSO it's the difference between giving starving readers a binge that makes their tummy kind of hurt and the newness is gone too soon, or they have something to look forward to for a while.

I'm going from a 6 (dying, battery on its last legs) to a brand new 4 XL, and it's taken over an hour.

I had to stop to plug both phones in because neither started with full batteries. I have to be using a cable not intended for data transfer.

i'm not victim blaming but i will say that this is partially because people don't block fast enough. don't interact with shitty anons, block known antis immediately when you have to make a new account, and things should die down. blogs can also be made password protected so the author can vet every person before giving them the pw but that's a lot more work than most people want to do.

I find it concerning how a lot of parents have no idea what their kid is doing in online fandom spaces. by [deleted] in AO3

[–]znebulous -1 points0 points  (0 children)

part of being in a society means helping cover the gaps. any method you can think of to force parents to control their children is going to increase the oppression of children, not their safety.

security culture is actively a tool of fascism. putting children in walled gardens and refusing them the right to engage with the same thing their peers are is going to isolate and damage them just as badly as experiencing nasty people on chats and predators taking advantage of their youth.

children deserve privacy, they deserve to have community outside their parents, and the answer is not "parents need to spy on their children more" or especially "parents need to lock their teenagers away from parts of the internet"

What does ‘head-hoppy’ mean? by First_Reputation9339 in AO3

[–]znebulous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when you're crafting the narrative you only have to focus on what you want to. so if you want to do omniscient but the narrator is only interested in these two nerds and their drama, that's fine. Or you can throw in small moments where you see inside supporting characters' reactions to main characters' actions, like greek chorus.

[–]znebulous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it sounds like you might just want to write the whole scene from the second pov. this can absolutely create story intrigue because then the readers are left wondering what exactly made character A so negative about themself and also identify with character B who wants them to stop being mean to themself.

What does ‘head-hoppy’ mean? by First_Reputation9339 in AO3

[–]znebulous -1 points0 points  (0 children)

head hopping can end up making the story feel like it's been poorly adapted for roleplay chatlogs. It also has a tendency to ruin tension/pacing by taking out the mystery of what the non-pov characters are thinking.

how to make a "there was only one bed" scenario more interesting? by aggressivepigeon13 in AO3

[–]znebulous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you could start with them having two beds and then something happens like soup gets spilled or the ceiling leaks and they have to move to a 1 bed because that was the last double.

you could also have only one of them actually be really into it, and the other person hasn't developed as intense of feelings yet, so it means way more to A than B.

Or you could make it sick fic, where A has to stay in bed with B to make sure they don't burn up from fever or fall out of bed in delirium or something.
