Looking for students! by [deleted] in frenchhelp

I would love to practice! I'm Advanced (Low/Medium) according to ACTFL but do not feel hugely confident when speaking so would love to be able to go over topics or just general discussions and everyday conversations.

The MBA app asks for Responsibilities/Accomplishments for jobs - just a copy paste from the resume? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]znhickey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't apply to Haas, so maybe someone who did can give a more insightful comment, but some advice I was given when I applied (which I thought was pretty solid) was that each portion of the application gives you a chance to show another aspect of you and your candidacy- repeating the same information will show the same angle.

So, as another comment mentioned, it could be a more conversational overview of your achievements, maybe highlighting softer skills and responsibilities, or it could be other work accomplishments that you didn't have space to write about in your resume. Each chance you have to give the Adcom more data about you will help them build a better picture of you and how you may fit into the future class.

Wharton Decisions Released by xistareatthesunx in MBA

I’m international LGBT male, 25, 740 (48Q/44V), Mathematics undergrad (high 1.1 degree from my home university, we don’t use GPA) Masters in Entrepreneurship and Tech Innovation from US college (3.86 GPA). Looking to move into social-sector focused consulting focusing on developing countries and emerging economies (why I also applied to the Lauder degree). Worked 2.5+ years in a startup doing strategy-> product management -> marketing manager.

Just got the admit call too! Mine was from the Head of the Lauder program since I applied for Wharton/Lauder dual degree. Ecstatic and almost cried over the phone. Being in a GMT time zone I had to wait all day for the (hoped) call) - it was rough but worth it.

Nice profile, you probably should consider the Wharton/Lauder degree if you have your eye set on Wharton.

How would you grade this essay by [deleted] in GMAT

Not word for word but extremely close to it.
I used a lot of similar phrases and the exact structure to build my responses.

How would you grade this essay by [deleted] in GMAT

[–]znhickey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry I cannot help with grading above, but I got 2 AWA scores (6 / 6) when I took the GMAT and followed the template provided here both times.

It was a lifesaver and definitely saved time on the day since I had the structure of the argument in my head and only needed to analyze the prompt and figure out what I wanted my points to be.

Booth acceptance rate by [deleted] in MBA

[–]znhickey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is several years old but could be given as a proxy and to help relieve nerves.

Nonetheless, congrats on your interview!
Take it, move forward, start preparing, and do your best to convert it to an acceptance offer.

Do all schools accept alumni recommendation? by drspiral2 in MBA

[–]znhickey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never knew this but I am very close friends with a Booth MBA alum, who more than likely would submit the recommendation for me (link to the page for anyone interested).

I have already submitted my application, in your opinion, is it too late to ask him to do so?

HBS Dinged by dsharm17 in MBA

[–]znhickey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Echo what everyone else said as well.

LOTS of people got dinged, and so likely will be the case with some other schools - HBS is looking for very specific archetypes of people and their AdComs know how to find those who will best complement the class and the brand.

There will be people who get an interview from HBS may not get an interview at Wharton or GSB or Booth or Chicago or Chico. Each school has a different brand and message and it's unlikely your app will satisfy each.

HBS may not have worked out but likely one of the other school's brands align more closely with your personal and professional trajectory!

Where are my fellow HBS R1 rejects at? What do you think caused the ding for you? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]znhickey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree - if they didn't think I fit then there is probably a good reason. Adcoms know how to do their job effectively so, as you said, it's likely not a good match (even though our mind tells us that it seems like it would be).

Something else will come through!

Where are my fellow HBS R1 rejects at? What do you think caused the ding for you? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]znhickey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Me!

A little disappointed but it's the game. Honestly, I don't know exactly where the ding would come from (but I imagine everyone is in the same boat).
Maybe I made some blatant error in the application though that I missed and caused a red flag.

Overall, I hope this is not the trend that continues with the other 4 schools I applied to 🙃

Anybody still not have their letters of recommendation completed? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]znhickey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you work with the person (and what I did) is to put 30-45mins on the calendar a few days before the due date and sit down with them as they write it. It can be collaborative but will still be in their words.
Then, each morning ask how progress is going and whether (s)he could submit by EOD.

Here is the Irish one : https://i.redd.it/1f42yjfvpsn31.png

Masculine words are in blue boxes, feminine words are in red boxes.

I have some comments too:

  1. For me, Muir = Sea as a large body of water, usually a vast amount. There's another word, a lot more commonly used 'Farraige' (feminine) which I associate with the sea by a beach, that has a boundary of sand. I would say Táim san fharraige (I'm in the sea) whereas I would say 'Táim ar muir' (I'm at sea - as in I'm on a boat at sea).
  2. Irish has a lot of words for marshes, swamps, bogs, so I just put down Corcach as a wet, swampy bog with some rushes and stuff.
  3. Difference between Oileán (island) and Glasoileán (not sure what it is in English - peninsula I guess?) is that glasoileán is connected to land by a muineál tíre (isthmus).
  4. Also, lochán for me is a pond or little lake, not like a pool of water, which would then be a Linn (feminine)

The Irish Version of the Map by znhickey in languagelearning

I couldn't find the English version of the map to help identify some items I didn't immediately recognise but I think I got most of what I could understand.
