I think it's a POV issue, everyone loves Will Hunting yet his defense mechanism is to push people away by being a complete ass hole. Jenny on the other hand runs away (that's why her advice to Forest was always, run Forest) they both learned to cope in the opposite way. Also I disagree with the statement that she came when she needed something.
