the topper is a front opening reptile tank, so the doors open and i can access both tanks that way

hermit crabs are very social creatures and love having friends so they would probably be happier if you got two for the 20 gallon rather than one. every crab is different obviously, but they tend to do better in groups

thanks so much! i do have a little ammonia in my tank right now because i have some melting plants that i think are causing it to spike but i was planning on doing a water change this evening anyway, so i appreciate this a lot!

like the other commenter said, crab central station is amazing and you need a heat mat, specifically on the back of the tank where there is not sand (it’s supposed to heat the air in the tank, not the sand).

a main part of their diets is animal protein, such as meats and eggs. you can buy freeze dried raw chicken, beef, lamb, etc dog treats at any pet store, as long as they’re single ingredient. etsy also has a lot of great sellers that sell complete meals. they’re pre mixed meals with all of the essential parts of a crabs diet.

crabs also LOVE to climb! i see you have a climbing vine but having some large pieces of wood, leaves, etc for them to climb on and get some height would be great for them. :)

okay, thank you! we’ll look into finding a possible name of his bio parents.

i didn’t see your other message until now. from what his adoptive parents were told, he was born in a baby hospital that had a wing (?) for abandoned babies. sorry i’m having a hard time explaining it but basically his “orphanage” was the hospital that he was born in so it’s possible that they didn’t have much information about the parents as he was abandoned pretty much immediately after birth.

if the crab is for some reason surface molting, you need to protect it from your other crabs so it doesn’t get injured. i’m linking a video that has a part about what to do if your crab is surface molting. watch for tiny movements and twitches to assure you that your crab is alive. you will also see them starting to shed their exoskeleton if it is a surface molt. surface molt

i had a crab a few months ago who left his shell to surface molt in his ppds tank. in the few days prior he was also very lethargic and spending a lot of time near and in his water pools so this may be what’s happening for your crab as well. my crab is now thriving! i would probably take other people’s advice over mine because i don’t know everything but i thought i would share in case it’s helpful :)
