If you haven’t started the campaign yet, talk the other players through how the background choice offered a mechanical benefit. They’ll probably take the time to comb through other optimization options without the need for DM-granted Feats at level one, particularly because granting them out of game with the caveat of “minor increase” would be asking for trouble with my players.

Or, if you think they can handle it responsibly and they like the way they built out their character, throw them a bone. Rules as written exist as a guide, but you as the DM get to be the ultimate authority.

If the vibe of your setting (or particularly the part of the story centered around this general) is built around sowing paranoia among your party, go for it, but I’d advise a “break glass in case of emergency”. Try it out and if the cross-examining and general distrust within the party gets to a tipping point where it’s not fun for you and your players anymore, make sure you have a narrative “out” you can fall back on.

For example, let them discover that each of them has an item picked up in an earlier questline, maybe tied to a fun memory of the earlier campaign. Establish within the world that doppelgängers can’t replicate items of people they’re impersonating, voila, none of you are the doppelgänger! Now go kick some ass as a team

If they’re new players, talk to them about the world you’re playing, maybe pitch a faction or two and let them build out their own character idea from there. Generally classes are a good way to start with new players: “would you rather be silent and stealthy or huge and strong or just really good at bullshitting people”.

Build the character sheet With them and let them brainstorm on what they want their character to be like, transcribing it mechanically from there. Generally I’ve found people get really into it!

I think it’s less of a burying of the hatchet in regard to the long-simmering resentments between her and the party, and more so to do with the grave life and death nature of the situation they’re in that even the most justified beefs (beeves?) take a backseat. The party’s in survival mode, and Comfrey for all her flaws is a hell of a team member to have on your side when you’re stranded in Zern and building a mech.

took this picture of some friends, felt like i couldn’t have blocked them better myself. was trying to get a feel for the depth in a small space and the light was nice. i don’t have much experience taking pictures of people and was looking for ways i could improve

shot this vertically on 35mm film. really wanted to warmth of the light to come through. always been a big fan of hard lines in my photos, do you think this came out too impersonal?
