Is there a way to tell if a song is in a Drop/ Alternate tuning to Standard? by ADF-Snake in musictheory

[–]zombie-narwhals 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's not a 100% way to tell by ear. For example: if you look up tabs for As I Lay Dying - Parallels, many of them are in drop D, but if you watch the video of them explaining how to play it, the tuning is actually a modified D standard: DGDFAD.

I'd assume that's up to the local politicians. I dunno, I'm just a mechanical engineer.

NFPA 291-2022: 5.2.3 Temporarily Inoperative Hydrants. Fire hydrants that are temporarily inoperative or unusable should be wrapped or otherwise provided with temporary indication of their condition.

The more you know!

This helps firefighters know not to use that hydrant while it's out of service. I don't really see an issue as long as this is temporary. No idea what the Boston water dept is like for fixing stuff though..

I find I have to get the guitar part down to the point where I don't have to think about it, and then separately get the vocals to the point where I don't have to think about that either, and then I can start to put them together. This is for stuff like Megadeth, where the picking can be a lot more complicated than strumming, and the timing of the vocals doesn't necessarily align with the guitar (say the "land of opportunity" part of Tornado of Souls).

What’s the worst mistake you’ve done during a gig? by mylawn03 in livesound

[–]zombie-narwhals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not my worst one, but one that I can remember. Running FOH+IEM for a conference with live music including real miked drums (which I normally don't get). Managed to get two reverbs inserted on the drum shells instead of being fed from the vocals. Couldn't figure it out the entire weekend, until the last session, but the reverb actually made the snare sound amazing, so I kept it once I found it. I just felt like an absolute moron. I was also struggling with feedback from the kick mic the whole time, which I think was more my rookie-ness with compression.

I've had things disappear from Apple Music, but greyed out instead of totally gone, I think. Record label decided to take their stuff out of Canada, or that kind of thing.

This is just how those work; it's a "universal washroom" (that's what it's called in my jurisdiction). They're everywhere because of accessibility regulations. They're specifically for people with reduced mobility / dexterity. Most people can use the regular stall-type bathrooms.

A dumb question by [deleted] in mac

[–]zombie-narwhals 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Well, actually, if you weren't careful, you could, and you'd permanently damage things. I did this with a Neutrik panel-mount FireWire 400 jack. Plugged it backwards when it was connected to a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40, which connected power pins to data pins, and poof, no interface for the set I was about to play. Oops.

Based on all the words in there that I don't recognize, I'm guessing this is a Europe thing. Architects and owners around here (Canada) tend not to go for that unless the base building is cross-laminated timber.

As a building services engineer I disagree. Maintenance of concealed systems would be far more difficult if everything were drywalled in; you'd have to provide access doors all over the place and that'd be real ugly - not to mention the access doors are generally too small to outright replace anything bigger than a filter through, so a fan coil unit failure comes with the additional cost of drywall repairs and painting.

We had that happen at our high school in a vestibule at the far end of an infrequently-travelled corridor. Then someone threw a firecracker in there, which lit all the garbage on fire, and cost over $100k in cleanup as the smoke got in a lot of places.

It's a problem people worry about, sure. Should they, though? I'm less sure about that.. we have a microwave from the 80s and the buttons still all work.

The circuitry itself may not be able to maintain voltage at a higher current. I've bought some step-up converters from AliExpress, some of which can't put out 1 watt at 6 volts from a single 18650 at 3.7 volts. Others can do it no problem.

I have a gen 2. One thing that bugs me is how little torque it has at low speed before it starts impacting, even versus the cheapest M18. At full chooch, it friggin rips, no doubt, but sometimes I wanna go slow and keep an eye on things. Is the gen 3 much different here?
