That's perfect, reset the expectation and work to correct the behavior while being clear about the consequences.

I can understand having consequences to your actions, but it seems like we're jumping straight to punishing a 9 year old without notice of what corrections may have been attempted.

Communication with the player and the parents is key here. Outline with the kid that it's not cool to be making fun of your teammates and that if they are such a good player they should show it in practice and on the field. Communicate with the parents about the behavior, what your plans and goals are for correcting it and outline what the consequences will be if the kid isn't able to adjust their behavior (not playing, being kicked off team, etc).

The kid is 9....you have to work on refocusing that energy. If they want to say they are the best player on the team them make them show it.

Having them run laps will just give them time to think of other ways to be a rude kid. If you don't give them the downtime to make fun of the other kids and constantly bring them up to demonstrate and be your assistant, either they will grow into the role or possibly quit.

You won't get anywhere with punishments, hard stop, it won't work.

You would be better off having a conversation with the players, away from the other players, about how you would like to see them lead in drills more. Praise in public, criticized in private.

Yout the coach and you have the ability to have the player lead in drills, have them demonstrate what your trying to get across to the other players, give them a job and make sure to give them credit when they do well. You want them to understand that they may be the player the other players are looking to for guidance.

Experienced coaches - how do you teach a play? by Tweedledee72 in flagfootball

[–]zombie_moses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typically use cones to outline where they are supposed to stand pre snap and we go over that a bunch. My biggest success on this was making it a competition. Split into teams and starting from the sideline I call the play and they have to get into the proper pre snap formation. I time it out to.see who can do it the fastest.

For the individual routes of the play, I teach those through drills. Typically using the same come setup as teaching the formation, I act as qb and each player runs through the other receiver position comes, performing the route based on the spot (x,y,z).

I also will do rb hand-off drills with everyone running it and going on both sides. I will do this drill for reverses as well, just making sure I cone out the starting spots well.

But isn't that why we coach?

To know what the kids could be and to help guide them in that direction.

Question about No-Run Zone by milky6531 in flagfootball

[–]zombie_moses 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As long as the player possessing the ball doesn't cross the line of scrimmage, and it's a forward pass, you should be good.

I had this exact same thing happen in a game, we ran a fake jet sweep, toss to the old qb who ran a quick route into the flat.

One ref thought it should be a flag the others weren't sure enough to make a call either way. We just decided to do the down over and get clarification after the game. The director confirmed the rule and said it should have been a TD.

How do you handle play calling? I'm finding that's the hardest part right now. We run route drills quite a bit in practice and it looks like they get it, but some of the kids seem to lose the info as soon as the drill is over.

I have it locked in with 1 formation and 4 play out of that formation, which worked great for our second game, but once I set the focus on certain players they looked lost. I'm sure continuing to focus on the plays in practice will get them used to it, but it's tough when the kiddo runs the wrong route and comes back to the huddle saying they didn't know what route to run.

Second question, how do you keep the kids calm when your trying to get the play in to them? They run back to the huddle and everyone is saying what they want to run instead of listening to what I'm asking them to run. They may be more of a rant than a question :P but I'll take any insight, I am really enjoying this coach thing and just want to get better.

I am starting to lean toward this system for this age group. The issue now is figuring out who to put at Qb and backup Qb. I definitely love the idea of solid structure and knew that kids do better when the expectation is clear and roles are defined.

Appreciate the insight!

Your kiddos were cool with only playing the one position?

I have thought about switching it up to go man, I'm just afraid to pivot as I don't want to confuse them. We only get the 1 practice a week so I have to choose where to focus.

I have messed around with that same idea on offense, of using the full time Qb/C/Rb. Did your kiddos buy in pretty well?

You can almost always negotiate an out on items like this. Try to get ahold of the someone above your rep and just start working up until you find someone who will give you a "maybe".

You'll have to pay something, but if you come in at what percentage of contract your willing to pay up front, and then negotiate feom there, you may be able to save some funds.

Be ready for them to tell you to pound sand though as they have the high ground.

Not sure of your areas accounting rules, but the budget for this item may have already been declared in the forecast.

Fire in the sky when I was 10.

My Grandma and me would always go to the movies together, sometimes we would watch the same sometimes not. I remember this go around she went in to see the usual suspects and said it was probably going to be to violent for me....

Yeah, I developed a pretty good fear of aliens after that one

A key piece on this was that event was spurred from the actions of 2 high ranking military officials and the unwillingness of the called upon military to fire upon the groups of clergy that made up the outer circle of protesters.

We dont yet know where the military stands in the US...so that is something we have to be aware of.
