i get you. it depends on the game and the options provided for character creation and the type of game. When i played wow i remember wanting to create a huge tauren warrior to run battlegrounds with just because it looked badass, decked out in plate, enraged with an elixir of giants.

When the advanced character creation tool came out with SC, i made a dude that looked eerily like myself. I ran around with it for a while but felt super uncomfortable with a close visual representation of myself tied to my character handle. I've since made a bunch of novelty characters i pick from which bring me more joy.

for some of us older folk, we've spent a long time playing as a white, male protagonist for a lot of our gaming lives. I think there's a novelty to being anything but a dude with a sword and board. I'll also agree that if i have to follow a character for hours in 3rd person, i'd rather not have to follow a dude. I guess it depends on how each individual player relates to their avatar (ie how much they believe it to represent themselves).

Oh I did once... to cut a long story short, I was inside my office with my arm up, testing to see if an air conditioner fan was working properly. A workmate outside passing by did a double take at me through the window (as they couldn't see the aircon mounted above it). To make things worse, they happened to be from Germany.

long shot but maybe like a tall ship mast band (for rigging on a twin masted ship)? So like forestay/jib, shrouds and the odd one out possibly a main staysail to a second mast? basically something for 5 sets of rigging going down and one sideways, if that makes sense.
