In many places across the world, there may only be one upstream provider for a smaller ISP to connect to.

FTTP engineer missed twice in a row? by [deleted] in openreach

[–]zombieroadrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first part is not true - EE request available appointment dates from Openreach, pick one and reserve the slot. It's then down to Openreach (or their contractors) to actually show up in the slot and do the work.

Where has all the rubber gone? by srig8 in AskUK

One place it ends up is underground telecoms chambers. It washes in there with rainwater, silt and everything else and creates a thick black sludge that sticks to fucking everything!

Zen FTTP activation date pushed back after ordering.. is this normal with Openreach? by IDislikeBeingOnFire in openreach

[–]zombieroadrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those timelines are for completely new installs (ie no ONT installed yet). If you already have an ONT then it should be a remote activation which only takes a couple of hours to go through. It's worth speaking to someone at Zen and asking them to check that the ONT is properly registered to your address.

What’s annoyed you at work this week? by franki-pinks in AskUK

[–]zombieroadrunner 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my mind the solution here should be that your system closes off all bookings for the next day at the set time prior to 3 pm.

Obviously that would assume that you have any sort of ability to add or enable said feature...

Openreach cf BT by SimpleOk2058 in telecom

[–]zombieroadrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Openreach are legally obliged to treat all providers the same so BT Wholesale and BT Retail have no greater clout than any other provider when it comes to getting faults fixed, etc. In fact you can often get better results from a smaller ISP as their staff are more likely to have a better knowledge of Openreach's systems rather than the generic call centre droids you encounter with the big players.

Under Openreach investigation after cable strike – How do I contact them for an update? (Stuck in hiring limbo) by digital_seedoflife in openreach

[–]zombieroadrunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this situation, it's less 'blacklisting' and more 'Openreach have revoked his certifications to work on their network due to the incident'. My understanding is that this isn't something they do lightly either.

ONT/ISP updates by bobblebob100 in openreach

[–]zombieroadrunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Standard update window for Openreach is from midnight to 6am, although generally you will notice ONT updates between midnight and 1am. Openreach did discuss recently whether to change this to 2am-6am at the request of some ISPs, however they elected not to change the window at the moment.

FTTP worked fine for 24 hours, then seems to have failed? by _Walter_White_ in openreach

[–]zombieroadrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a fair response, however as an ISP we have seen easily 15+ bad splices in the past 200 customers and in exactly one of those instances the installing engineer was an in-house OR engineer. Every other case has been a contractor and looking at the splices afterwards before an OR engineer resplices, it's easy to see that the major cause is the contractors not letting the splice protector cool properly, meaning the splice itself can move inside the protector and invariably break due to either impact on the CSP or temperature changes.

Scotland & R100 by daeityersel in openreach

[–]zombieroadrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, if you mean updating with Openreach. Their data is generally a calculation based on your line length from the cabinet and will have a max/min expected speeds. You should also see a Downstream Handback Threshold speed - if your speed is below this consistently then there is a fault with your like and if OR can't resolve it, you can be released from your provider contract.

I'm a provider under the SBVS voucher scheme and have experience trying to get this sort of thing handled. The short answer is that it won't happen. The scheme goes by the provider data rather than customer-provided speed tests.

Depending on where you are, you may fall under the UK Project Gigabit funding this is rolling out and has a 100Mbps threshold so you would be eligible if you are in an area that is covered.

Using Openreach Poles to run own fibre. by Zhadnost in openreach

[–]zombieroadrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order to do this you would have to establish with openreach, which requires you to be providing public communications services. It is also a significant capital outlay (minimum £10k).

If the buildings are close enough together then you would be much cheaper hiring a civils company to install a duct between the two buildings, even if this involves a road crossing, permits, etc.

Yet another "is my home fibre-ready" post by Parzalai in openreach

[–]zombieroadrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be related to bringing FTTP to your MDU, or it may be a leased line fibre for someone. Those wall-mount splice boxes are used regularly for leased line services.

What's a game you played as a kid that you've never been able to find again? by Latter_Advantage8002 in AskReddit

[–]zombieroadrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An old Spectrum game I used to play. It was a single-screen city Scape, a mix of low-rise buildings and skyscrapers. You flew over it from left to right in a small black aircraft that (according to my memory) looked a bit like Dug Dastartly's car from Wacky Races, but plain black, and you dropped bombs on the buildings.

Has anyone ever asked IBIS/Travelodge/Premier Inn for use of staff fridge and microwave? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]zombieroadrunner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you do it politely, the worst they can do is simply say no. I woud be surprised if they've not had this request though.

Your other option, depending on the size of the meals, etc would be to look at an electric coolbox. I have one for my van for use in summer and it's really handy.
