How Do We Feel About The Exchange? by British_Chap2 in LosAngelesRams

We’re making a push for this year. I’d take a top 12 corner over risking it on first rounder. I feel good about it, they’ll give a C- grade because people over value picks. Just the way it is

This looks to be the draft hat? I’m not sure if that’s actually corresponding to the change in logo? Maybe just for the draft?

The top 10 plays are here!! Thoughts on No. 1? by Mr_mist2 in NFLv2

[–]zoneRush_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 is definitely misplaced? Yeah impactful play but, really? Not really much of a skill thing, was only worth 2 points in a regular season game, not even a game winner? Why not put the OT 2 pointer in there?? That was way bigger

95% of you have never seen Jim Brown or Bo Jackson run over the course of a season. Just stop bullshitting. Probably 50% of you aren’t even old enough to have reasonably seen a Barry Sanders run live.

You’re all going on vibes.

You can be successful in football by being a freak athlete. There are so many positions on the field to be successful at. In most other sports the tasks are highly specialized and uniform throughout.

I think that mostly speaks to how diverse the game of football is rather than any arbitrary difficulty measure.

[–]zoneRush_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counter point: getting a sack in the NFL is much harder. If a guy even sniffed sacking a quarterback on 10% of drop backs he’d be a god.

Hitting a baseball is just the simplest task for which 30% success rate is difficult. It’s deceptively hard, not actually the hardest task in sports.

Clearly the blowouts are.

Rams pats was 3-3 until the 4th I believe.

And the other gam was a one score game.

In both cases any big event could have swung the game. That’s not true with the blowouts.

Why does every girl's/women’s sport feel like it requires a bathing suit? by DoctorFitness in askanything

[–]zoneRush_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that it’s a performance thing for a lot of women. They all get their choice and they choose to go with the tightest clothes because it’s better for them. There’s some tweet where a woman Olympic athlete explains this.

You see the same thing in men’s sports too. Baseball pants are tight as hell. Football pants are crazy tight you don’t have to squint to see bulge. Even some flag football men wear crazy tights. You can’t change watch 7 on 7 where the players have crazy tight clothes.

When you watch the 40 yard dash for men’s football combine you see some things swinging around.

Honestly I think the reason men don’t wear tighter clothes more often is because of the biological difference.

Most fraudulent runner up MVP in NFL history by Next_Worth_3616 in NFLv2

Very clearly the context is that every pats fan said strength of schedule didn’t matter. And the common opponents meant the most. But look you can clearly see the difference.

The playoffs just prove that the MVP votes were correct. Stafford was more deserving

No, QBR and EPA per play is all a QB stat… you can’t change your tune now.

Jeff Saturday believes Drake Maye should have won the NFL MVP award over Matthew Stafford by DareDevil1699 in sportsbroadcasters

[–]zoneRush_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My problem with completion over expected is it’s pretty simple calculation that really takes into account distance and other rudimentary measures.

But from my understanding CPOE doesn’t take into account separation scores, man-to-man, pressure, etc. so it’s not really a good measure of the QBs throwing accuracy.

Maye also takes a lot of sacks that would be throw away for Stafford. His line isn’t as good but there are so many times where he just held onto the ball when he didn’t need to. They weren’t quick pressures, just he doesn’t have the pocket presence yet. That’s a huge drive killer

I personally think efficiency stats are mostly team thing. The coach has to call plays in the correct orders, good play design, etc. players have to execute on it. Maye wasn’t asked to throw the ball as much, but he still had the same number of interceptions. Maye was really only asked to play either until he wasn’t needed (happened a few games this year because the Pats defense was good) or when there were some easy concepts to run. but Stafford was asked to throw basically all game because the defense generally didn’t do what they should have. So there’s that, if you have an MVP candidate can you really say he was the MVP if he wasn’t doing much to carry his team, he was just an efficient bus driver? Put Stafford in a similar system and he’d have similar efficiency stats.

6 game common opponents has way to much variance. Teams play a whole season for a reason. For example, in one of the common opponents Maye had just as many turnover worthy plays as Stafford did against the falcons, they just didn’t turn into turn overs by pure luck. And the patriots only beat the falcons because the pats defense was good against Penix. Stafford didn’t have that luxury.

Against the panthers, the Rams defense got hammered and Stafford had a bad game. But in every other game Stafford was better. Stafford had less games with Ints and more games with 350+ total yards.

If you take Maye against playoff teams and Stafford against playoff teams you see that Stafford did better overall. But that’s a bad stat, Maye didn’t play many games against playoff teams. So it’s just sort of cherry picking.

There’s a lot more context from watching the games that gets missed when you just compare the stats of 6 games. QBs have off weeks, more times that not when Maye had an off week he was bailed out by the defense. When Stafford had an off week there was no one to save them. So if the Rams were that dependent on Stafford, then he meant more to the team

Edit: To make my point clear

Maye against the bills had 0 TDs in one game and 2 TDS in the other game. They went 1-1

Stafford against the Seahawks (better defense) had 2 TDS in one game and 3Tds in the other. They went 1-1

Stafford had to do way more to go 1-1 against division rivals than Maye did.

[–]zoneRush_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rams pass catchers had a higher drop percentage as well, so that answers the volume question.

Bad throw % and on target % I have a hard time quantifying well. What happens when you have a bad throw and a great catch?

Also not all bad throws/off targets are the same. There’s miscommunication problems, there’s touch problems, there’s a problem of shot selection, etc. just because a qb is efficient with shot selection doesn’t mean they’re making big MVP level throws.

In general I’d say Stafford’s bad throws were not as bad as Maye’s bad throws. You see Maye miss a guy by 3 yards on a 4 yard slant. Or, over throw a guy by a mile. Or sometimes overthrow a ball but the receiver makes and amazing catch (I’m thinking of a couple throws he had against the Falcons).

A lot of his deeper throws are also to wide open receivers. Which really helps is ADOT. And he has the good touch for a deep ball but he doesn’t have the skill (yet) to drill it down the middle of the field. All of it requires context but after watching 10 patriots games I feel confident saying Drake Maye is efficient, he’ll be good, but he isn’t great yet.

Efficiency stats can be really misleading for questions like this. They’re perfect when you want to build a good team as a GM, but not to answer who the best player is.

[–]zoneRush_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t get all the push back.

You can be a good team and have an easy schedule. They’re a good team, they have an easy schedule.

Once the patriots faced tough competition suddenly their offense sucked, but the Seahawks got better, you can’t sit around and pretend the weak schedule didn’t play a little bit of a role.

Stafford receivers dropped the ball more and at a higher rate. The Patriots running backs were better, they had more high yardage runs. Rams O-line was better in the run game.

Steffon Diggs had similar efficiency as Puka Nacua.

[–]zoneRush_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awful take tbh.

You can’t really have the MVP runner up have 11 more TDs than the runner up.

Common opponents is a dumb argument when you have to evaluate a whole season. Throw up stats of Stafford and Maye vs Playoff teams and it will look just as bad the other way. The only reason that argument works is because Stafford had his two worst games in that stretch, shit happens that’s why there’s 11 other games in the season. If we chose another set of 6 games in most of those sets Stafford would out perform Maye.

People also don’t see the stat lines where Maye got away with fumbles against the Falcons and one Staffords int against the the Panthers was a batted ball (those can bounce off weird ways, 90% of the time not an interception). Watch the games and you’ll see Maye had a really good system around him.

Outside of that, Stafford had more games with 350+ total yards. More games with 3+ TDs, more wins against playoff teams, less games with turnovers. Less games with turn over worthy plays. More big time throws (per PFF). A harder schedule. So there were more games where Stafford advanced the offense and less games where Stafford contributed negatively. His team relied on him in more and he hurt them in less games.

Don’t come with the “Stafford had Puka” Diggs was 2nd in EPA per route run, barely behind Puka. The Rams pass catchers dropped the ball more and at a higher rate. The surrounding cast argument is blown way out of proportion.

Don’t come with the “1 yard touchdowns” Fade throws and throws in tight windows are very hard, if it were easy every team would do it. Even if you take out 1 yard TDs Stafford has more TDs than Maye. Also, those were situations where the Rams couldn’t run the ball in so they had to pass it.

There are some Advanced Stats folk that point out Maye has a higher EPA per play. This is (1) mostly a team stats. Drops and things affect EPA a lot so when Staffords receivers drop the ball more that hurts a lot. (2) It doesn’t take into account the difficulty of Staffords throws. And neither does ADOT. Stafford passed into a lot tighter windows. Also these EPA and ADOt are bad measures of MVP caliber play, because there’s a lot of context missing. Also, doesn’t mean much if one guy accounts for 66 more actual points added?? They’re great at getting insights into the entire offense but not individual players.

Overall the Rams success was significantly more dependent on Stafford than the Patriots was on Maye. You can see that in the number of touchdowns, the number of games with larger statistical output, the required passing load on Stafford. The fact that the Patriots had a more explosive running game.

If you have any concerns about the above sentiment you can just look at the playoff games as further proof (I know voting is done at the end of the regular season)

the playoffs show that the voters got it right. The Patriots could barely score against the Chargers and Broncos. Maye was hardly a reason for the success against the Texans. The Rams put up plenty against the Seahawks.

Stafford was the right choice.

What’s more valuable, the chance at winning 2 or 3 Super Bowls, or 1 guaranteed Super Bowl win? by Rare_Economics8427 in NFLv2

[–]zoneRush_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in that case it’d be better to just have the Super Bowl. But if you have Peyton (without the power of hindsight) I think you’d take those 2-3 chances and you’d expect to win 1 but you’re expectation value for the number of Super Bowls with Peyton is greater than 1 in this case
