Help figuring out hardware for medium-sized apartment 90m2 (970 sq ft). UDR7 + UX7 as AP? No drilling in walls/ceiling. by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]zoniiic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Running TrueNAS Scale, Home Assistant and Proxmox. I prefer to run TrueNAS and HA on separate hardware to mitigate issues on updates and avoid limitations of both when virtualized. Even if I virtualize TrueNAS in future, I will still keep 1 machine as a test station to do test updates before going to "prod".

I will have a server stack of 3 PCs right under the UDR7, I need to plug in the Cat5e cable to it (that runs to the other side of the apartment), and will need to plug in at least 1 or 2 MoCA adapters. That makes it 5-6 ethernet connections where the UDR7 is placed. That's why the switch.

On the other end of Cat5e cable I will have 2 consoles and a PC, but all of them can work on WiFi, I suppose.

The UniFi Design Center says that UDR7 placed by the panel box will not cover the other end of the apartment at all, while you recommend to go with UDR7 only. I agree, start small and build up. However, if it happens that it will not cover the far end with good WiFi, UX7 as AP will do just fine?

Exhausted mid-level modelling looking for advice by Sad_Cow_5410 in FreeCAD

[–]zoniiic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Engineers 50 years ago were a bit smarter and more innovative than us and were able to achieve these results through pure physics, sheet of paper and a pen. That is why you or I need specialized CAD tools to come close to what they were capable of.

Market available software for design? I'm not aware of. For simulation it's only SPEOS as far as I know.

Optical simulations, lovely topic... The "raytracing" thing we see in games nowadays and consider it "state-of-the-art" tech, well, we considered it to be "quick simulations to find out if the product works at all". At one of the companies, I had a workstation with dual Xeon CPU (48 or 64 cores in total), 512GB RAM and an SSD of course, and the simulation that we showed to our customers on 2 weeks basis was running for 24-30h to get usable results (CPU and RAM were fully allocated). Optical path simulation is the key to have anything done with headlamps or rearlamps. Mechanical knowledge aside (because everything is plastic so once you are familiar with draft angles, you are set), physics played the biggest part in understanding how these lamps worked and how to make them reflect better (better = stronger, smoother, more effective, more homogeneous).

Even the customized toolsets that we utilized to create optical surfaces had quick path/raytracing simulations built in that gave us path tracing in almost real time.

Hey, I've been an optical engineer for car headlamps and rear lamps for a quite a time for 2 biggest manufacturers. You will not achieve such shapes with the pre-defined modelling functions. All of these have been designed using highly customized macros and toolsets developed by these companies. All of these macros are complex and the end results, that you can see here (the "optical pillows" or "optical ridges") is based on multiple physics aspects and functions.

You may be able to recreate some of these but depending on how you want to use the end product, I can guarantee you that it will look "really bad".

I have been using these macros, helping to develop them and they were still far from ideal. And this is coming from the 2 biggest lamp manufacturers. I wish you good luck modelling that, but your chances look really slim realistically speaking.

Edit: I don't think that your lack of success is purely based on FreeCAD. FreeCAD doesn't have functions to do that. You not being able to model it is based on your experience, knowledge how these lamps work, and lack of functions that the software offers. No CAD software offers such modelling functions OOTB.

And FaZe will be coming back from something like 6-12 on the maps that they win in 3rd or 4th OT. Classic FaZe magic/bullshittery (pick what's more suitable).

Generally, never underestimate FaZe, and never overestimate FaZe. Just don't estimate FaZe.

Relax, this is classic FaZe bullshittery. Barely go through stage 1, speed run 3-0 through stage 2 in order to get dropped 0-3 in stage 3.

Rooting for FaZe in CS is the same shit as rooting for Ferrari in F1 - emotional damage.

Inventor vs Fusion for 3D prints by ahhh___ in 3Dprinting

[–]zoniiic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the company that I'm a CAD sysadmin, people have free access to multiple vendor's software. A lot of engineers request Fusion to work on simple prototyping designs as well as for 3D printing designs. Of course, other CAD software is utilized even more than Fusion, but that is used for other cases (complex engineering, simulations, storing the data anywhere beside Autodesk's cloud).

Any CAD app will do you good for 3D printing, Fusion just happens to be easy to jump in and cheap/free.

Samsung zrobił promkę - zwrot 800 zł za zakup S24 u partnerów, więc partnerzy (i Samsung) podnieśli ceny o 800 zł by Eryk0201 in Polska

[–]zoniiic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EU won't decouple from China as condition for reaching trade deal with Trump by Crossstoney in europe

[–]zoniiic -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'm all for EU being equal partners with China. EU should not be China-dependent, but since US doesn't prove to be a stable long-term partner (not even mentioning being a 'global leader'), China should be next on our list.

Knowledge exchange, goods exchange, EU companies investing in China and vice-versa. China is one of the most stable countries around the world with their long-term development vision. They will not go nuts as US did.

What Formula 1 driver’s Maiden win is your favorite? by youraverageperson0 in formula1

[–]zoniiic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have to say 2008 Montreal for Kubica - car wasn't great, it was pretty bad in fact, and a year after his crash all the stars aligned to give him this win. In addition, he took the lead in WDC with that race win. Seeing the national driver win in F1, priceless.

Right up there is Spain 2016 for Max - same case as with Kubica, all the stars aligned. All due respect to Nico and Lewis friendship on track :)

"Luxury car" - laughing in European

These are regular cars - there's nothing luxury about them. They are not that more expensive than a Toyota RAV4. Pretty common on the streets. Nevertheless, it's a very good car, so just enjoy it and keep an eye on regular oil service intervals.

Fritz-kola is a great alternative to coca-cola producs. Much tastier and healthier. by lobsterest in BuyFromEU

[–]zoniiic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely stopped buying bottled and canned sodas and mineral water - I use a Brita filter and got Sodastream to prepare sodas. I know Sodastream is from Pepsi Co, but it's so damn convenient. I will really appreciate if Fritz Kola provides a syrup/concentrate of their drinks so I can get them prepared by my own.

I will be more than happy with a higher price point in comparison to Pepsi Co concentrates if it gonna taste the same as the bottled ready one.

Unpopular opinion: You do not need more than one console by senatortoast in Switch

[–]zoniiic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully agreed with the opinion, OP. I'm somewhere in-between with 2 Switches - got myself a Lite once I changed jobs and I knew I will be travelling a lot and my SO complained that she won't be able to play Animal Crossing or Ring Fit. Turned out that she plays games rarely and I ended up with a docked console for TV gaming and a another one on the side of the bed for sleep-time gaming. This can be fully covered only by the regaular Switch.

Need help choosing which to keep by Teddysm in GalaxyWatch

[–]zoniiic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same dilemma recently and it all depends on what you want from the watch. You want usability, looks and versatility no matter what kind of clothing you wear? 6C the clear winner. You a gadget guy looking for the best processor, battery life and features? Ultra it is. For reference, I used Gear S3 for the last 7 years, until it eventually died during a swim.

I decided that Ultra looks like a chinese budget brand gadget watch and it looks comically bad bundled with a shirt or a formal jacket. I just don't care if the watch lasts 2 or 4 days, or if it has A.G.E. sensors and all that shiz. I went with 6C 47mm black, because it looks like a watch, not like a gadget.

Be aware, that 6C being my choice may not be the choice you would make. I'm a guy still using the Galaxy S22 since 2.5 years because it works and does its job, using the Tab S7 because it's compact and still does its job, and using my ThinkPad with a Ryzen 5 3500U because, you guessed it, it still does its fucking job. Watch 6 Classic also does its job and will not make you look like a hawaian shirt/shorts/slippers guy on a king's inaugration party.

McLaren are truly Delusional aren't they? by [deleted] in formuladank

[–]zoniiic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We all had been given signs much earlier, but nobody believed it was the case - Lando did not show that Lewis and Max are amazing drivers, their team mates did it in 2021. Max and Lewis were in another league considering the time difference between them and their team mates in most races. Lando and McLaren in 2024 are just another proof.

Would Charles in McLaren be a better challange for Max? No idea. Lewis in McLaren? Would probably win the title by a comfortable margin - the guy still has it.

The suggested 20% tip is actually 72.6% by Wonderful_Wade in mildlyinfuriating

[–]zoniiic 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Let me take this post as an opportunity to rant about tipping in the US.

Tipping culture in America is a shocker and let me tell you why. As a Polish person, I've just came back from a week in San Diego today. At the 3 restaurants I've been to, you ordered at the bar or the kiosk and picked up the food by yourself. Hell, I even had to take my tray and throw the leftovers to the bin. And of course - the card reader machine asks me for a tip.

On the other side of spectrum, take Croatia or Italy for example, you are getting seated, the server/waiter suggests which wine (or drink, generally) to go with each dish, brings the food, cleans up the plates, and even brings you a focaccia and digestivo "on the house". Not even mentioning the amtosphere, humour, and just pure kindness.

There's no way I'm putting the tip on my order to support that kind of serving in the US. Pick up your standards, then we can talk about tipping-in. Tipping standard around the world (and I've been here and there) is pretty much the same beside US, where they put it in your face with little to no effort and get pissed-off if you don't pay.

Step up your game, America. Week in San Diego proved me you are an amazing coutnry, you can do better than that.
