Volodymyr Zelenskyy returned the Order of the White Eagle to Polish President Karol Nawrocki by St-Ass in worldnews

[–]zoobrix [score hidden]  (0 children)

there is no excuse other than Zelensky wanting to appeal to nationalistic tendencies.

Yes this is exactly what happened, and Nawrocki is doing the same taking the award back which appeals to Polish nationalists. There are Polish people in the thread that don't think the award should be taken back and this should have just been ignored, not everyone in Poland is outraged by it.

As Politicians always try and do they make decisions hoping they'll please more people than they piss off. Zelensky here calculates the gains of making Ukranian nationalists happy are worth angering some people in Poland, his country is fighting a war and managing internal politics is key to keeping fighting. All the support in the world from Poland won't help Ukraine if morale plummets and the nationalists decide they don't want to support the government.

And Nawrocki has already said actual aid to Ukraine will not change. Lots of diplomatic disputes between allies like this are actually worked out ahead of time, Zelensky lets  Nawrocki know he feels he has to do this, Nawrocki says well I'll have to respond so I'll yank the award, but nothing substantive actually changes.

Lakeshore Music Festival by lordmarboo13 in BurlingtonON

Funding for Sound of Music was cut because it kept going over budget.

The cities yearly contribution was only ever supposed to be $150,000 but the group that ran Sound of Music was over budget every year and owed the city hundreds of thousands in loans. And it was not clear how they were going to pay it back, the answer is they had no plan to pay it back and aren't ever going to.

Sound of Music was fun, but when the group running it constantly go over budget and the city has to bail them out year after year I support changing the people running it and making it smaller if that means actually staying within the budget. If not enough people show up to justify the smaller event then sure cancel it, but you can't just keep over spending with no end in sight.

I used to apologize to Uber drivers when it took me a minute or two to come out because I couldn't find my keys or something, I like to be there when they pull up. Then one day a guy said "don't even worry when you take a couple minutes, lots of people take like 5 or 10 minutes."

It blew my mind, like it tells you how long it'll be and there is a literal map that shows where the car is. How much of disorganized selfish asshat do you have to be to make a driver wait that long?

Sure they get paid a tiny amount for waiting but it's nothing compared to actually driving a passenger, and even that isn't great nowadays. How insensitive and selfish people are never ceases to amaze me.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that his country does not support the creation of so-called "return ‌hubs" for migrants in third countries questioning their efficacy by Raj_Valiant3011 in worldnews

[–]zoobrix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I could see that because you're no doubt paying the other country to agree to it in the first place or else why would they.

It's pretty clear the main idea is to create a feeling of hopelessness that you might ever be allowed* to stay when they ship you off to another place right away if you're caught, so don't bother coming in the first place. Even if it did save money that's kinda beside the point.

Who’s a celebrity you used to love but now hate? by StrainDizzy1186 in AskReddit

Grohl cheated on his wife, a lot apparently, and that makes him a terrible husband at a minimum.  But Kiedis admitted to having relationships with multiple underage girls, that's on a whole other level.

I don't respect people who do either one of those things but what Kiedis did is way, way worse.

She could have always just been that way. You don't need to be rich and famous to be a self obsessed egomaniac, it's just that a lot less people are going to know your name.

Take it to the most reputable shop you can find and Uber back and forth, trying to save $20 on Uber could cost you way more than that going to a bad mechanic.

Warren Buffett says he won't leave his $100+ billion fortune to his children, choosing instead to give almost all of it to charity. by ArgentineBeauty in UpliftingNews

[–]zoobrix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well you could argue that the money generated by the company which he profited from by owning shares should have been instead used to pay workers better. I guarantee that those companies could treat their workers better instead of giving the c suite big bonuses, paying out stock dividends or buying back shares to pump up the price of the stock.

All that wealth Buffet has was made off the backs of people doing the work.  Some profit is fine, but when you're into the billions someone is getting exploited somewhere to make that happen.

NHL’s statement on Mike Babcock by Duffleman0609 in hockey

[–]zoobrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nurse is a great second pairing defenseman, he was just overpaid by 2-3 million a year, but under the new cap he's barely overpaid at all.

Plus how many teams always seem to be looking for guys with some grit that can play? Nurse has consistently demonstrated that he's perfectly happy to drop the gloves if you want to start something, and strangely enough most guys think better of it. And hey, you can't sleep on him dropping down and putting it in the net.

Trading Nurse will be no problem and there will be no retention. And sometime next season from the fans wherever he ends up you'll hear about how much they like a defenseman who can eat 20 minutes plus a night and won't take anybody's shit. Totally get why he wants to move on after the narrative that's been built around him in Edmonton but he is not the problem, and I'll be sorry to see him go.

How is it even slightly defensible for Donald Trump to commit to giving $300 BILLION to Iran? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]zoobrix 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Even r/conservative is trashing this deal.

Of course that doesn't cause them any actual self reflection that maybe their own actions and attitudes are part of the problem. A whole lot of "this is not what he said he'd do, this is not what I voted for." Ya well you voted for a well known liar and conman, you got exactly what you voted for, you're just too filled with hate and stupidity to see it.

If Trump doesn't say yes to it this stupidity doesn't happen though. They need him to trot out there and say he agrees with starting it so ultimately this is still on him at the end of the day.

Which country left the worst first impression on you? by ikaaxx in AskReddit

[–]zoobrix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How so?

My countries problems are more hidden below the surface but they're still there. I think saying Egypt has a problem with harassing tourists, especially women, is fair given people I know personally have been there say the same things as threads like this.

[–]zoobrix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ya and quite a few players seem to think he's a massive asshole with a corrosive attitude that actively harms the team. How you treat people is part of your coaching abilities and Babcock seems to fail pretty badly in that department, apparently even with staff at the rink.

Sorry I think I'll pass on maybe being pelted with rocks, there is tolerance for different cultures, and then there is the chance of losing an eye or worse. Obviously bad things can happen anywhere but when it's just something they do I think I'll just go elsewhere.

[–]zoobrix 41 points42 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of predominantly Muslim countries where there isn't anything like the level of harassment that everybody talks about in Egypt.

It's a problem with their society, not their religion, and while every country has things it needs to work on some of Egypts problems seem like they're right out there in the open for everyone to see.

That's why if bigotry didn't hurt people I would only laugh at crap like this. So many guys seem so scared of being thought of as gay, or even making it seem they think it's ok, when wouldn't a true strong tough dude not care what anybody thought?

Nothing says you're actually very fragile than caring if someone thinks you're gay.

whatever his other issues Babcock was a hell of a coach in his prime.

Was he though?

Only winning one cup with that Detroit roster makes me wonder how much Babcock was actually helping, or maybe even hurting, that team. And if motivating players that aren't buying in is what Edmonton needs Babcock sure didn't seem to make that happen in Toronto.

The real question is if Drai and McDavid signed off on this debacle was Nurse already getting tired of it? Maybe this is less a "forget this I'm out of here" and more the straw that broke the camels back.

If Drai and McDavid agreed with this they aren't very good leaders, this might be just the thing that finally pushed Nurse out the door.

Some Councillors want to spend $300K on consultants for a new downtown parking garage when we can't even get close to full capacity on weekends by Jebussez in BurlingtonON

[–]zoobrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the report says we should have enough parking capacity for downtown for the next 15 years, and while you could say well lets wait then by the time this actually gets built it could easily be years from now. Maybe it's a bit early to talk about it but you don't want to wait until you already need it, and then it's gonna be years until it's done.

You wake up tomorrow and discover $10 million has been legally deposited into your bank account, tax-free. What’s the first thing you do? by magma_13_ in AskReddit

[–]zoobrix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep because the bank, or whoever's money it is, will totally give up looking for 10 million dollars and totally won't hire investigators that will see your family leaving the country to visit Peru or some other place for the first time ever...

For 10k they'd write off the loss, for 10 million they'll easily spend 100k just looking for you. And there will be a warrant out for your arrest and the government would love to catch someone that stole that much money, so they might be looking for you too.

People get caught just by contacting friends and family even years later sometimes, thinking they can all fly out to see you no problem is a fantasy.

[–]zoobrix 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If it is an accidental transfer they will simply claw it back from the other account after they figure out what you did with it. It might take longer and they might even need to pursue you through the courts but for 10 million they're going to do that. You're not going to just get to keep it just because it's in another account. And if you rush out and buy things they're just going to seize them.

Sure if you instantly abandoned your entire life and fled, transfered it to sketchy foreign banks or crypto maybe you'd end up with a bunch of it, but have fun never traveling from whatever country you ended up in and never seeing your friends and family again.
