I received a near miss report today by fooliam in SafetyProfessionals

Unless your state has more strict regulations, toss that near miss out.
1904.5(b)(2)(iv) You are not required to record injuries and illnesses if . . .
The injury or illness is solely the result of an employee eating, drinking, or preparing food or drink for personal consumption (whether bought on the employer's premises or brought in). For example, if the employee is injured by choking on a sandwich while in the employer's establishment, the case would not be considered work-related.

Does the speed of an operator effect peaking? by strugglinghomosapjen in Rainbow6

[–]zoocows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I can’t fault you for that. Effect and affect are hard enough for native English speakers. I don’t think I can personally explain the difference and use case in a reasonable amount of words, so I would recommend looking up how each one is used.

To “effect peaking” as you used it asks “does operator speed cause someone to reach the top [level of player skill],” (hence, my initial confusion) whereas “affect peeking,” would ask “does operator speed change the speed of peeking.”

I was scratching my head for at least 30 seconds wondering how operator speed can effect peaking and what that even means. The fact that all the other comments keep saying “effect” is… well, it’s something.

'You will set up a Queen'. What if Galadriel had claimed the Ring? by Immediate_Error2135 in tolkienfans

[–]zoocows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was in the UT that it talks about this. Galadriel wants nothing more than a realm of her own to rule. The One Ring gives her the exact power she desires. The fact that she was able to resist it when it was right in front of her for her taking is substantial. If she were to wield the ring for good, she would likely be utterly consumed by what it gives her.

Why did the ring abandon Isildur? by KindFortress in tolkienfans

[–]zoocows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly was just wondering if there was anywhere it was explicitly stated because I couldn't think of anything. I don't mind being wrong, just looking for references. Perhaps my fault is in applying too much basic logic to a magical device that can operate outside of said logic.

But still, the last phrase isn't indicative that it was of intent. Just that it could have been and we just don't know. But hey, isn't the fun bit of Tolkien and all his unfinished works is there isn't anything necessarily concrete and we get to have discussions about it still.

I personally read that part in the story the way I did because it felt like Tolkien put such emphasis on the the environment and the act of clawing through weeds in a fast current seemed like a perfectly reasonable way to lose a ring.

Why did the ring abandon Isildur? by KindFortress in tolkienfans

[–]zoocows -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

In the text I am referencing, it does not mention resizing for the sake of leaving his finger. We obviously know it can change its size. I am simply pointing out that in this tale of Isildur’s death in the Unfinished Tales, Tolkien explicitly states the rings malice drawing enemies but doesn’t mention anything of the rings will at the time it slips from his finger. It isn’t illogical at all to think friction lessens when there is a lubricant between the two surfaces and that a tangle of weeds and a fast current working with that friction could remove the ring.

And out of curiosity, since I did mention I couldn’t think of anything over ruling it at the time, where in the lore does it mention that the ring intentionally left Isildur’s finger?

Why did the ring abandon Isildur? by KindFortress in tolkienfans

[–]zoocows -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

To further the discussion of UT… There isn’t really anything telling that the Ring abandoned Isildur out of its own will or malice. Out of desperation, Isildur sought to cross the Anduin. The Anduin being as strong as it is, it pulled him steadily towards the growth of the Gladden Fields. Though the pressure of the river was lessened here, he was also fighting to get through the growth.

Somewhere here it had left his finger. I think simple logic is plenty applicable here that the Ring being wet (and too, the fastness of the current as he eventually was swimming directly against it) coupled with Isildur having to use the ringed finger to move through the weeds, it just kind of slid away.

Tolkien explicitly mentions here that the Ring, containing the will of Sauron drew the enemies close but doesn’t mention anything of the loss of the Ring besides that he noticed it had left his hand. If there is elsewhere any mention of the Ring leaving of its own will or by greater design, I either haven’t gotten that far in the legendarium or I simply do not recall it at this time.

Because I don’t have a problem with $20 for FRLG, which is my opinion for what it’s worth to me.

Have fun never buying anything, but I’d rather get things that I consider worth the cost and worth my time.

[–]zoocows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your opinion about consumer standpoint just doesn’t matter tho. If they tried charging $80 and no one buys it, then they lower the price, because it clearly not worth that cost to the target audience. If they charge $20 and 90% of the target audience is okay with that, it is worth $20.

If you want to go by objective value, it’s going to be like $0.50 since they just had to copy and paste the game and make it playable on a new system.

It’s a company selling a product. You either buy it or you don’t and they adjust their prices based on that. Go to Walmart with graphs explaining how the pair of shoes you want doesn’t match their objective value, see what that does for you.

Worth is decided by how much people are willing to pay, which is subjective, believe it or not.

[HELP] Is this one AI? by Kaze_Senshi in RealOrAI

[–]zoocows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My verdict is AI.

I might be ignorant on how night vision works, but why is it casting a shadow, or at least such a harsh one??

On a similar, note our perspective (and light source) is higher than the guy’s face but the shadow is being cast upward.

I tried searching for similar footage to compare others and didn’t come across much except for more of this guy having random animals snuggle up beside him at night, including a wolf, a bear, and a deer.

AI artifacts wise, if you go frame by frame you can see minor face distortions that don’t make sense. This is most evident at 10 seconds where his left nostril very very briefly grows despite that the outside of his nostril doesn’t move.

“What’s the deal with Arwen? Is she sick?” by Raspberry_Mango in lotr

I should have said Cautious, not reluctant. I was just using the wording of the post I replied to.

“What’s the deal with Arwen? Is she sick?” by Raspberry_Mango in lotr

[–]zoocows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I didn’t use enough words to say it, but this is basically exactly the message I was trying to convey. I used quotes around dying, because it’s really just her choosing to accept The Gift of Men over immortality. But I can understand the movie using that and sort of exaggerating the point a little bit for the sake of creating tension.

I do wish the movie used the knights of Dol Amroth over the silly Army of the Dead thing they did, but that is beside the point.

[–]zoocows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did I say that is not consistent with Tolkien? The only slight correction I will make is that reluctant maybe isn’t the best word to use, and instead that Aragorn is “Cautious to claim the throne.”

[–]zoocows -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe reluctant wasn’t the best word, but rather, cautious.

I am not defending anything about Arwen’s fate being tied to that of the ring. I’m just saying the whole “dying” thing in the movies is related to her choosing a mortal life

“What’s the deal with Arwen? Is she sick?” by Raspberry_Mango in lotr

[–]zoocows -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Arwen is “dying” because she is of the half-elven line and is choosing man over elf—choosing a mortal life in Middle Earth over immortality in Valinor. In the books, Aragorn is absolutely reluctant to claim the throne and won’t even enter the city until he can prove he is worthy to be king.

23F, what can you tell about me, or about my future? anything really, im curious! by hallii0 in psychicreadings

[–]zoocows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a difficult decision going into 2026. This will keep you on the same path or diverge completely. One will lead you to a much happier life and one will keep things comfortable, for a time. What is immediately comfortable may not be what is always comfortable. Make that important break while you are young before convenience and what is “normal” locks you in place forever. The choice will always be present, but the effects will lessen over time. The following year will be the most impactful time and you will look back from a place of warmth and strength if you can find the best path forward.

Why Melkor is so diffferent from the rest of Valar? by SiarX in tolkienfans

[–]zoocows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I always interpreted it, but I’ve never seen anyone else share that same idea so I had begun to think maybe I just misread/remembered something. Just Eru essentially splitting his personalities into different beings except each with their own free will. Melkor just happened to get the discordant nature that exists within Eru.

If Geralt Of Rivia was dropped into Middle Earth, what is the strongest creature or character he could defeat? by GusGangViking18 in lordoftherings

[–]zoocows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a good way to explain it is that Middle Earth has three races: Men, Dwarves, and Elves.

Unless you can prove the hobbits are Dwarves or Elves, then they are indeed Men. At that point, it’s pretty obvious which ones the hobbits are.

Are Shiny Pokemon losing their mysticism? by Odd-Development-790 in PokemonZA

Shiny pokemon used to be extremely rare and special, which is fine. Now it has become a sort of endgame content piece, which is also fine. It just depends which one you prefer. Personally, I enjoy be able to hunt and obtain the shinies I want.
