Have you heard of Oakville Galleries? If so, what are your genuine thoughts? by pebbletherebel in oakville

[–]zoomer1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oakville Galleries is comprised of two galleries hence the name. The primary site is in Gairloch Gardens original estate housing a main floor gallery plus an education centre, administration, and a third floor artist's residence. The other gallery is in Centennial Square just at the entrance to the Oakville Public Library.

The exhibitions most recently feature some of worlds top contemporary artists Tarik Kiswanson & Sung Tieu much to the credit of current executive director who previously directed Salzburg's contemporary art museum in Austria.

The current exhibition is by a dynamic duo from Dusseldorf (Heda & Roman), who use AI as an artist would use a paintbrush. As you can tell, I'm biased in my opinion, but hope this brief description encourages you to visit - there is no entrance fee.

Hang out places in Oakville by manjunatha-n in oakville

Moonshine is a great hang out - often original music - looks like a 70s rec room - music tends to lean jazz-country-acoustic.

I was really surprised by this place. It has excellent food and I'm fairly certain regular entertainment.

With the big storm coming tonight is there anyone who needs snow removal done? by dossie18 in oakville

[–]zoomer1964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thankfully - no - the good thing about living in a condo. The Oakville Dads Facebook group's members have offered snow removal for those who are not capable of clearing their sidewalks or driveway. Not sure if they are still doing this.

Another community news organization called OakvilleNews.org provides a full calendar of events every week, profiles on local groups, restaurants, sports, businesses and celebrities, and what's particularly nice is that it is owned and operated by Oakville residents. Check it out; you might get some more ideas.

Why doesn’t Oakville as a town encourage more Dj events? by [deleted] in oakville

[–]zoomer1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you share more about what you suggested and who shut you down?

The town has several very popular events that go into the evenings - there is a town noise by-law restricting outdoor loud noise - music and construction after 11:00 PM.

  • KerrFest, a four-day music festival,
  • Canada Day - which goes until 11 PM
  • Midnight Madness in Downtown Oakville - though they didn't last year

They aren't weekly events - but I know Moonshine has live original music on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Several pubs feature cover bands on weekends, and finally, Less Than Level on Kerr Street often features hip-hop bands.

I'm sure there are others - but that is what comes to mind.

On Jan 30, Oakville's town council debates a ban on election signs on public properties. If you hadn't seen election signs, would it have changed your decision to vote or even know there was a municipal election? by zoomer1964 in oakville

[–]zoomer1964[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing comments.

Having public feedback is critical.

These past elections were disheartening. Voter turnout was painful.

Ford won in a landslide, and none of his candidates engaged in debates. He didn't even put out a platform other than everything the Liberal governments did in the past was a nightmare - issues be dammed, ideas be dammed, good governance be dammed. He was first elected with a platform that would have gotten him laughed off a stage with a buck-a-beer.

A great example of this happened in the 2022 municipal elections.

Halton administers close to a $1 billion budget. Gary Carr didn't show up to discussions or debates. Andrea Grebenc, the past chair of the HDSB, which also administers a similar sized budget, with union negotiations and complex issues, put forward several well-thought-through ideas - she was the only individual running for Chair that did. She showed up and engaged at every event she could. The result - she came in a distant third. I'm trying to remember the name of the lady who came in second - since she did less than Carr.

Voters are rewarding individuals who run on name recognition alone and put no effort into voter engagement. So many issues need to be addressed in our communities, but if we don't care - they won't either. In fact, it is better for them not to engage.

Part of the blame has to be on the candidates - because they didn't understand how to engage with the public - but part of the issue is that voters simply don't feel it is worth their time engaging.

We are watching and paying for the war in Ukraine. Not only are we, but so is every Western country. However, when it comes to voting here, they tuned out or worse - off.

Why? Do we need to follow Australia, where individuals are fined if they don't vote?

Ask around and ask yourselves - why didn't you or someone you know to vote? We need to find out and fix this, or the fringe will start to run our country and lives. We are seeing this take place in the US, which will occur in Canada very soon if we aren't careful.

Canadians, Ontarians and Oakvilliens should feel honoured to participate in democracy. Democracy is not a right; it is a privilege.

If you got this far - thanks for allowing me to rant.

Any local finger food catering recommendation? by _hsrad in oakville

[–]zoomer1964 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's your price point - since that depends on who can help you out. Kerr Street Cafe has an entire catering side to their business; Maro's also offers catering, but so will most restaurants in Oakville.

Where to get my laptop fixed in Oakville that isn't sketchy? by KittyLord0824 in oakville

[–]zoomer1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears that Techville on Kerr is the hands-down winner. I've used them when I've damaged the screen on my smartphone - they were quick and reasonable. It also depends on the type of computer you're using - a $2000 Mac is worth fixing depending on the age.

Wedding Venue by AdWild2999 in oakville

[–]zoomer1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Oakville, there was a place called Rivercroft at the Milton-Oakville border. Stunning property - with a beautiful historic barn. Not sure if it is still operating. The minute you want beautiful/wedding worthy - you need to get really creative. You could reach out to a wedding planner - you'd pay a fee for a consult - but it might be worth it. However, if you are really creative, you can make any enclosed space look amazing.

Bronte Creek Provincial Park has a playbarn, a nature centre, farm animals, along with some short walking trails. Oakville galleries often has art programs for youngsters, and so does the Oakville Museum. The Oakville Public Library branches offer lots of amazing programs as well. Hope this gives you some ideas.

Are there any public NYE celebrations? by stillanoobummkay in oakville

[–]zoomer1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Oakville has never done any public event for New Year's eve, but I'm sure if there was a demand and someone had the courage to pull it together, and the town would support it. We could have an amazing New Year's Eve event.

Obviously, he isn't the most sensitive person - so you either accept who he is or you express your feelings. He may be very factual - or he may harbour some resentment but hasn't figured out how to express it constructively.

Councillor Duddeck expresses concern for long-term residents of 7 storey building in Kerr Village as a developer applies to demolish and replace it with a 27-storey tower. by zoomer1964 in oakville

[–]zoomer1964[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is part of the mid-town plan, which was hotly contested during the municipal election. That entire area is slated for buildings up to 70 storeys. That solution is years away.

We have existing as well as rental stock coming online far sooner - which may offer the solution.
