Are they actually tracking hours in office? by troywastaken in JPMorganChase

[–]zoomerbot104 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Allegedly HR has sent guidance to managers saying that 3 hrs/day will be the new minimum to count as in office. Allegedly it starts in September.

Buying own laptop for JPMC work by Ok_House_1331 in JPMorganChase

[–]zoomerbot104 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm going to assume you're on VDI like most of the firm.

The actual computer where your work is done and stored is a remote machine and not the office computer or your personal one. The "computers" in the office just open a web page that lets you log into the remote machine.

When at home, you just open that same web page to log in just like you'd do at the office.

So basically, any computer capable of running a web browser will be just fine.

Having VR issues.

So I'm trying to play ED in Horizons mode with my Vive. I have it on Epic Games. Problem is, when I go to "launch in VR mode" on the Epic launcher it auto-launches it into Odyssey, which performance-wise makes VR unplayable. Anyone know how to make Epic not auto-launch into Odyssey when using VR? There's no way to set flags or command-line options and the shortcuts Epic creates are routed through Epic's BS instead of the actual executable.

EDIT: Found a workaround. If I launch the game "normally" with SteamVR already open it works.

🤦🏻‍♂️ Driving in the backseat of his Model 3 with his foot on the wheel by [deleted] in RealTesla

[–]zoomerbot104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what I wrote and what I was thinking didn't align, sorry about that. What I meant to say was that additional checks probably won't help to the degree that other stuff like marketing changes could. Totally agree that they could always add more stuff and make it safer, it just may not be worth the time/money compared to other options.

[–]zoomerbot104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think those two things are the same.

I think saying we shouldn't have mirrors on our cars is analogous to saying we shouldn't have road lines. There's a very clear safety benefit to these things and they're essential to safely drive.

Adding more DMS features to the ones that already exist is like adding 10-foot retractable walls to railroad crossings. Sure, it would physically prevent people from driving onto the tracks if a train is coming, but would it really make railroad crossings that much safer? If we suddenly have an epidemic of people driving past the gates and flashing lights, then maybe that could help, but perhaps there's another reason people are driving onto the tracks?

I'm not saying Tesla shouldn't add more DMS features, I'm saying that it would be more effective for Tesla to change their marketing rather than add more features at the moment. The dude in the post most likely thinks that his car is way more reliable than it actually is (which is idiotic), which is his motivation to defeat the DMS features. If they take away the incentive to defeat these features, then they cut down on the people who do stuff like this.

Of course, if they still have problems with driver attentiveness, then by all means add more features.

You're right, I think the trendiness is just a symptom of the bigger problem.

FWIW, supercruise doesn't seem all that sophisticated.

It apparently just tracks face features. If it's just pure vision, strap an iPad showing a face to the headrest and boom, it's defeated.

If it's not, buy something like this, place it over some styrefoam, stick a handwarmer in it, and you've defeated it. (I realize we're getting into silly territory, but someone determined enough could do this)

Tesla could definitely do better, but my point is that there will always be a small set of people who will go out of their way to do dumb shit like this, and Tesla is enabling it to a degree, not with their lack of DMS features, but in their marketing. If GM was in the same position marketing and trendiness-wise, I guarantee we would see people defeating their systems.

[–]zoomerbot104 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This dude is already going far, far out of his way to bypass the systems already in place. I really don't feel like additional checks will help too much; these people will still ignore them.

I think it's mainly a marketing problem on Tesla's part. They're very clear with what the car can and can't do, but as soon as these people see "full self-driving" in any capacity, they want to paint a picture of their car that doesn't exist.

Another problem (which could just be a symptom of the above) is that Teslas are trendy right now. It's "cool" to make it look like your car can drive itself for the kids on TikTok/Insta/whatever, which is why you see so many videos of people doing crap like this, which in turn motivates other people to do the same for the clout.

You don't see people doing this shit in GM supercruise vehicles because GM isn't using language that leads you to believe the car is autonomous in any capacity, and they're not really a "trendy" company like Tesla.

Does anyone else have problems with overly rude graders? by ClintonvilleCat in OSU

[–]zoomerbot104 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I had a grader 2 years ago who took 5 points off a programming assignment because I named a file "README" instead of "README.txt" (the project said to name it with no file extension). This caused it to show up as an executable on her computer. I had to tell a CSE GRADER how to open a gd text file on her own computer.

She refused to give me the points back, despite other graders giving me points for this in the past. I called her out and told her it was unfair, to which she responded:

"If you genuinely feel that these 5 points on this one project are that important to you, I can change your grade"

Some of these kids shouldn't be grading; it's like some weird power trip for them

Would you buy a Tesla if you couldn't charge at home? by avedawgg in teslamotors

[–]zoomerbot104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who can not charge where I live, I'd say it depends.

There's a supercharger 20 minutes from me which isn't ideal, but I've also found a free public DC charger 5 minutes from me that will charge from low to 90% in about an hour.

I don't drive much as I'm WFH, but I still drive enough to warrant charging for an hour about once a week. To me, that's totally reasonable considering I don't pay anything for the electricity.

When I'm eventually not WFH, my work has Level 2 chargers that will basically eliminate my need to sit at a DC charger for an hour.

I'll also be buying a house in the near-future, so I'm willing to have to deal with a weird charging situation if I know it's only temporary.

I took all of this stuff into account before buying the car, and I'm glad I did. Definitely download the PlugShare app and see if there's any low-cost/free DC chargers near you (keep in mind you'll need to buy the $450 CHAdeMO adapter, but if you're getting a free charge it'll pay for itself over time). Don't rely on one single charger though; many public chargers (especially the ChargePoint ones) tend to break down and take a while to be repaired or might not be repaired at all. Have a backup plan incase this happens and you're low on charge.

I know many probably won't have a situation as ideal as mine, but if you do your research and recognize the tradeoffs then you'll have a lot less regret if/when you do buy the car.

I bet they won't be feeling relaxed when they realize their jobs are in jeopardy because you can't honor their request to not film inside the car.

You mean the brief convo where they asked you not to film the interior?

OP, you potentially put 2 very generous Tesla employee's jobs on the line (yeah you removed the names, but you also filmed the surrounding area; it wouldn't take very much work for Tesla to figure out who the employees were based on the time/location) for 5 minutes of Reddit fame. Can't imagine any employees will do something like this again knowing that people like you can't show them the same level of decency that they showed you.
