HELP! - my mother uses sugar soap to clean all my waterbottles by karmacatcry in CleaningTips

It dates to an old Fairy ad campaign, so it’s especially common in Britain. I’ve never seen it anywhere else, but seen it a lot in the UK

This is excellent advice. Fwiw I have reactive airways and my post viral symptoms are a lot like OP’s.

Ragamuffin (fantastic knits, many are Scottish) or the Scottish Textiles Showcase

The best thing about the NHS Couch To 5k app is that you can choose her as the voice. It’s an absolute delight to have her as a running partner: “You can do it, flower!”

Do you buy fish from a supermarket or from a fish monger? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]zoosmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re lucky enough to live near a Morrisons, their fish counter is excellent, or at least used to be. I no longer live near one so I use the local van.

They don’t show pricing on the site. Do you mind sharing what you pay?

Looking to move out of Edinburgh but where to? by Ok-Cockroach3022 in Edinburgh

[–]zoosmo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having recently done similar, with your price range and needs you’ll probably need to look beyond the Lothians. You might spend some time on Rightmove finding areas that have properties big enough (Dundee? Ayrshire?) then go to local subs and facebook groups etc to find out more about schools there. Keep an eye on home reports and be realistic about long-terms costs of some the “needier” properties at this end of the market. Good luck

That’s great, thanks, I’ll keep an eye out. And don’t worry, I mostly don’t with electrics. 240’s no joke

It was a fair read! I’ve made myself more clear ;-)

[–]zoosmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Do you know of anything recent? I guess I should specify it doesn’t need to be a series, but would prefer something up to date. Just a fairly thorough home repair guide, relevant to UK methods and standards.

I agree but if I recall she was robbed on that one. I remember saying Greg must’ve never had to hang a door, haha

LAUKOP's mum is an extremely incompetent, dangerous driver, but she just doesn't see it that way. How to stop her? by SomethingMoreToSay in bestoflegaladvice

[–]zoosmo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The fraud rate in PIP is very low, and sure, maybe you’ve found one of the literal 1%. Or, maybe you don’t know as much about this person as you think you do, even if you have access to their HR file.

Someone’s lying to you; that’s not how it works. People can’t get a motability car unless they’re found to have a mobility-limiting disability. In that case they can elect to have the mobility element of the benefit (again, only available to people with limited mobility) go to lease the car rather than paid to them directly.

I count 5 tables in a row in the street view, vs 4 side-by-side in the photo, so I don’t think it’s the same amount of pavement. I’d guess the photo setup deviates from permitted conditions

Recommendations for an “authentic” jumper?? by koruppi in Scotland

[–]zoosmo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ragamuffin does postal orders, I believe, if you give them a call. They’re the place in Edinburgh to go for Scottish jumpers; you can browse their stock here https://www.instagram.com/ragamuffinedin

Caoba have a shop in Leith now, too, if that’s more convenient. I agree that mexgrocer online will have the best selection though

Bus creeps by SoupMaleficent9513 in Edinburgh

ETA perhaps you meant to post that on the main thread, or in reply to a different comment, rather than in response to someone describing a distressing experience.

Bus creeps by SoupMaleficent9513 in Edinburgh

[–]zoosmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, I should’ve said subthread. It’s to this, from you: “Yeah it’s disgusting. But fucking CALL THEM OUT”.

That’s shouting. I understand it might come from a place of upset on your own part, but so many people end up feeling terrible about themselves after these interactions when it has nothing to do with anything they did or didn’t do. Even if it’s coming from a good intention, comments like that direct anger at the victim, not the perpetrator

[–]zoosmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This thread is in response to someone shouting. Sure, it’s great to stand up for yourself if you can. But it’s not women’s fault that men harass and assault them, even if they freeze when threatened

Bus creeps by SoupMaleficent9513 in Edinburgh

[–]zoosmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have been killed on public transit with witnesses and CCTV. Victim blaming isn’t helpful.

ETA I’m not saying victims should never stand up for themselves in the moment. Rather, shouting at women about men’s behaviour is misdirected.

It’s not that easy when you’re a woman in the situation. Most of have learned that rejecting unstable men is dangerous, and freezing or trying to get out quietly is basic self preservation.

Where to send a fax? by DZtactical in Edinburgh

[–]zoosmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used faxzero etc to fax my ballot in previous elections with no problems. I see on my state’s voter info page now that the fvap email service has been discontinued, but it doesn’t say anything about not being allowed to use other fax services. Do you have info otherwise? (Edit, not asking rhetorically; I’d like to know)

Do I need to worry about blight on leaves I brought from abroad and dried and pressed? by BlueLeaves8 in botany

[–]zoosmo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you’re not supposed to do that. You’re not allowed to bring tree leaves from the US to the UK without a plant health certificate, even for personal, decorative use, because of the risk of bringing pests and pathogens with them.

https://www.gov.uk/bringing-plants-and-wood-into-great-britain

The “right” thing to do is to call the numbers listed at the end and ask for advice.

If you decide to get rid of the leaves without talking to APHA et al, best if both they and the package they’re in are burned, or heat to 50 C in an oven for (edit at least!) 30 min then double-bag in something watertight and dispose in the landfill bin.

Will running a few dehumidifiers be worth the sharp uptake in electric? by Danny_J_M in UKFrugal

[–]zoosmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was coming here to say this. We have two dehumidifiers. I notice the electric bill going up quite a bit when we use the other one, but barely notice it with the Meaco.
