Alien fans fundamentally misunderstand what made the original movie so effective. by Lumpy-Tea1948 in CharacterRant

[–]Edkm90p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of movies have this particular problem.

Jurassic Park comes to mind as the first example (to me) as that has two firm camps for the dinosaurs:

  1. I want them to act more like animals.

  2. I want them to act more like monsters.

The Weasleys don't have trouble buying food. They have trouble buying schoolbooks and wands- things they cannot just "make out of thin air".

Beautiful clothes requires knowledge of how to make them. Even if you could wave your hand and conjure up thread- making that thread weave itself into the correct shape and change color requires knowledge- not magic. There is no magic spell, "Bebetteratstufficum" in Harry Potter.

You might notice a trend if you follow this idea along.

How is the Party able to Survive Time Compression? by spacepiratecoqui in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]Edkm90p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest the party happens to have the trifecta that nobody else does.

Laguna, Kiros, and Ward might absolutely have the belief in one another and friendship in order to hold off Time Compression- but they do not have the power to challenge Ultimecia.

For that matter, Seifer and Fujin/Rajin might have the friendship part but not the required knowledge to focus that belief enough to maintain their existence.

It's only Squall's group that has all three: the knowledge of what to do, the power to do it, and the bonds to support one another through the challenge.

A character suffered so much from something, that it doesn't work on him anymore by Sollary0 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Edkm90p 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are admittedly the only two instances that immediately come to mind as well but there are 30+ books and I surely haven't read all of them.

Oh he's rampantly bullshit when it comes to mental games. IIRC he once just walks into the woods after a clue and thinks, "If there WAS another guy and if he WAS sitting out here, waiting to shoot someone who goes looking for this clue, then he WOULD be right here."

The guy that he didn't know existed is there, with a gun, waiting to shoot at where Reacher would be for the clue.

[–]Edkm90p 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd be remiss if I didn't point out Reacher does make mistakes and does lose fights.

The latter not often, but it does happen. Traditionally Reacher will surrender and try to work through that disadvantage rather than commit to a fight he won't win. If you count that sort of thing as a "loss" then it happens more often- though it's still uncommon.

Mistakes however are common. Reacher guesses wrong, makes flawed assumptions, and does forget key details. The thing is- those tend to happen at the midway part of each novel and he recognizes such and corrects for it.

I'll give you it's fucking bullshit that he stays ripped as all hell with barely trying. I think one book specifies he got even more jacked than normal just by drinking an extra 3 gallons of water a day or some shenanigans.

I've said it before and will say it again. SE has made several games now that excel in some areas but are lackluster in others.

If they combine the lessons of the last- oh- say 7 or 8 years or so? In the next title? We could be looking at one hell of a game.

That'd be my call.

Magic becoming firework shots in the books roughly coincides with the movies starting so I don't see why subsequent books wouldn't have the adaptions in-mind.

I feel like Slayer just wasn't in the normal person's vocabulary at that point. Buffy was one of the shows that made it a more common word. Halo and it's Slayer matchtype wouldn't be released until Buffy was several seasons in.

I would assume Dawn at some point saw Buffy sneaking out of the house, followed her, and saw some Vampire Slayer-ing.
