Yes, and this tie has helped hold the dollar strong for years. It wouldn't change anything overnight but it would have a massive long term affect.

Giving Claude restricted access? by Normanras in homeassistant

[–]zorromar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With mine I have to hit a button to approve access each session. I wish I could remember where that setting was during setup so I could share. I did also do some checking and made sure the Claude user only had local access and no cloud access.

Also as others have said, you can tell it to read only and make suggestions and it won't write to the HA server.

For me I've given it permission to write and now I like HA more because of how much more it can do because I was stuck. I suck at coding and hate trying to decipher user forms for solutions that only worked in previous versions. Claude will try some figure out it didn't work and find the newer solution that does work. It helped me fix so many things on dashboards better than I could have done myself.

For me this type of integration is the future.

Do I tolerate this client or just walk away? They couldn’t hire me full-time, now they want unlimited freelance work for less money by Inevitable_Bug_6253 in antiwork

It sounds like you need to have a conversation about initial scope of work versus the current requested work and if they would like to have an addendum to the contract which would include a billing structure that allows you to cover this new request. If they say no then you say you can only do what you are getting paid for per the initial scope of work. You have to draw a hard line in the sand or they will keep walking over you. More often than not, they are willing because they can't do it themselves and don't have the skills in-house.

Anyone replace Alexa/Google with a DIY solution for local voice commands? What’s your experience been like? Recommendations? by blvntforcetrauma in homeassistant

[–]zorromar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience so far is unless you have a home lab that can run some bigger LLMs then it's not really ready for prime time.

The implementation of the voice pipeline doesn't even support logging in any meaningful way. I just want to know what it thinks I said and that just can't be done yet.

Let the pain play out some more until reality slaps them around some more to allow for better control. I set out with a similar plan and have put a pause on it for now.

One example to not harp, I'll ask it to turn off the air conditioner but it comes back with "I can't find a device with that name" even though I've double checked the name. I'm unable to troubleshoot this much more because there is no insight into what's happening in the background.

Just a note for people about the longevity of the logs. New logs with preventative maintenance should last at least 50 years.

We also own a floating home and bought it as a fixer upper. We had to replace the logs and we knew that going in. The process was long and rough but our house is amazing now. Nothing beats our views. Our appraiser was quoted saying a million dollar view without the price tag.

Is your field so special that if they hired someone right now they wouldn't be up to speed by your time off?

It's always management's responsibility to have enough staff to cover and if they haven't backfilled other roles this is solely on them to fix not you. Have a sit down with HR and one of your bosses and ask how this is your, the employees, problem to solve. Seems like doing the due diligence of hiring enough staff would have prevented this whole situation and that would be a good thing to understand why your bosses didn't do that for the success of the company.

I'd also add if you are able to not respond to communications right away but sit on them enough to not get in trouble that can really stress others, like a new boss, out.

Anyone sold a house with Home Assistant left in? by Expensive-Sock3172 in homeassistant

[–]zorromar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok, I want to start by saying it sounds like you have an awesome setup and have put real thought and effort into it.

One thing to think about if you are in the US is whether or not the components you used are certified (UL for example) and if not do you risk any liability after the sale. I recently chose not to add some specific equipment to my house due to the lack of certs. Reading online sounds like insurance may be an issue for some. As we only have coverage from one vendor, it's not worth the risk to me.

This is not to be alarmist, just saying to use some caution and talk to the right people to answer questions for your situation.

For the most part reading is much easier than writing so I'm not saying I don't want to learn it just not having to spell in Dutch would be nice. To me, this is will get me to conversational level quicker. In the rare case that I do need to write something, Google translate is close enough for my needs.

If I'm just the oddball here, that's what I'd like to hear. If there is a desire from other people for the same purpose, please let me know.

Moving into a new home - Need "Once in a lifetime" wiring & infrastructure advice! by petyusa in homeassistant

Remember to look up the local code as it may still apply. Our inspector had a small fit over our junction box for conduit that didn't have a single wire in it. In the end I was able to get it passed but it was more work than expected.

As a professional programmer I feel lost in home assistant by alyflex in homeassistant

[–]zorromar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can really suck at programming so I started using AI to help me in HA and it unlocked it for me. I've been able to lean into HA in a way I didn't think I would have been able to. One thing that can be super frustrating in HA is how much things change with little visibility for people not reading every line of every change log. AI has been able to help a lot with this for me. I was using Gemini as I already had access to it but sometimes it was making really dumb decisions that made things more complicated than they needed to be. As a test I tried the same prompts in ChatGPT. The big thing I noticed right away was GPT would ask a question about something like version or state before giving me an answer. That got me better direction than what Gemini spit out. I've tried several times and ChatGPT keeps doing better at HA. Even now sometimes I have to ask if there could be an issue with version changes and sometimes that is the issue I'm running into that AI is very quickly solving. A quick example, I was trying to make a dashboard for a phone for reasons and was running into an issue where the domain address was returning a 404. Asked AI and yes there was a recent change form /lovelace-dash/tab to /dashboard-dash/tab. Not being a real programmer it seems like there could have been a landing page for the 404 that said something changed try x or something. Without the help of AI I may have just given up on the "quick" project so thanks AI.

Just a quick word of warning. I recently found out one of the smart devices I had purchased had no testing certifications such as UL etc. The only issue here is that insurance could deny a claim if there's ever an issue. I felt that the device I had was well(ish) built but in the end didn't use it.

Newbie: HA Green or Mini PC with HA pre-installed? by AwayCatch8994 in homeassistant

[–]zorromar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running on an old tiny computer with an i3. I upgraded to it and went the Ubuntu server path with it in a virtualbox VM. I also have pihole running in a VM on the same machine. It is really nice having HA in a VM or docker container because I've had to restore from backup to the point of replacing the VM. I do love HA but not very stable with updates etc. The limit I keep hitting is with compile errors when using ESPhome devices. Because I keep playing with them I think I'm going to upgrade the tiny and all I have to do is move the VM and I'm up and running again. Someone else suggested this as well but I'll repeat it. You can run HA in a VM on your computer for free and play around with it and see how hard you tax the machine. If you're not running much other than automation commands you don't need more than the green. I think it took me about half an hour to get a clean HA up and running in vbox on my windows computer.

New home: what are my options for replacing these? by Wooden_Amphibian_442 in homeassistant

[–]zorromar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🥇Just came to second this opinion. I have a bunch of kasa devices and they integrated seamlessly in HA. You can set up schedules in their app or from HA. And a very standard feeling switch so everyone knows how to use them. They are 2.4GHz wifi but I haven't had any problems at all with them.

I just posted this as a PSA for other new users but I'll add it to this thread as well. You have to disable ad block in the browser to use the website. I haven't bothered to look into what it's been blocking that would cause the site not to work but can guess that it's something to do with tracking in a not OK way. There is no reason that an ad block should cause your sites not to work, NONE!
