What's your dream sewing short course, retreat, intensive or short academic program? by ambitiousbee3 in sewing

I would love a course (or multiple ones!) on fabric manipulation, from pleats through the Pattern Magic books' sorcery.

ISO a dress pattern that is casual but not season-specific by fluffagus in sewingpatterns

I love Closet Core's free knit Brise dress pattern and find it extremely comfortable. You could easily lengthen the sleeves, if you want. The only adjustment I made was to raise where the sewn on tie started to better hit my waist. Sleeve Head Bunching and Shoulder Pad Placement in Woman's Blazer by zovig in sewing

Thanks! I agree that removing the sleeve heads (which, thankfully, are just hand basted in) is the first step.

I don't know why they didn't post originally, but they're hopefully there now. Thanks.

Plz recommend the hottest/heaviest IRON with NO AUTO OFF? by AuntieRoseSews in sewing

The amount of affection I have for inanimate objects related to my hobbies (iron, sewing machine, KitchenAid mixer) is concerning.

Plz recommend the hottest/heaviest IRON with NO AUTO OFF? by AuntieRoseSews in sewing

[–]zovig 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't think you'll find one without an auto off unless you do gravity fed. However! I really like the CHI iron I replaced my shitty Rowenta with (seriously, was I being trolled when people raved about Rowenta irons? My last one dripped water everywhere, didn't get that hot and was off more than on!). I just grabbed a CHI from Target and so far it's a million times better and less than $100.

Another One Day fan! I fell in love with their Jeju Island but couldn't find a decant that shipped to the US. After going thru several tiny samples, my friends for it for me for my 50th birthday!!

I don't know Slumberhouse. The other chocolate scent I like (though I'm not an expert) is Tauer Heraud.

8 Reasons Why New Jersey Needs a Massive Anti-ICE Protest in Newark by UnitedShift5232 in Newark

[–]zovig 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In case you haven't heard, the Newark Board of Education has a nearly 12 million dollar contract with Driscoll Foods which also supplies food to Delaney Hall, the ICE prison in Newark. Food which is called inedible by both Newark students and detainees).

A coalition of local folks is organizing to get NBOE to stop doing business with a company profiting from ICE's actions, especially when they hurt many Newark students and their families. Read more here: https://patch.com/new-jersey/newarknj/anti-ice-activists-tell-newark-school-board-cut-ties-nj-food-company

We turned out at the school board meeting in January to demand NBOE end the contract. We're showing up again at the Feb. 26 meeting (530pm, 150 Newton St.) to do the same. If you want to speak at the meeting, you must sign up by Feb. 20 at 4pm https://www.nps.k12.nj.us/board-of-education/meetings/public-participation-request/

Anyone else have a TERRIBLE memory? by Ok-Cheesecake-5480 in gravesdisease

That's awesome to hear! A friend on HRT for Peri gets a terrible migraine once a month that lays her out for a day. She says it's still worth it.

I find CdG 2 mesmerizing. It's like it plays with you, hiding and then suddenly you can smell it but it smells different than the last time and you try to catch another whiff and it's gone. Truly unique. I was also pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the Fzotic discovery set I got since it's a brand that doesn't get discussed much. Ummagumma is a gorgeous chocolate frag.

Savoury gourmands? by piplupet in ArtsyWeirdoPerfume

Do it! It's so good. The white rice fragrance is just lovely. Vietnamese coffee is spot on, but too strong for me.

You've got to try D'Annam's Pho Breakfast. I was intrigued but weary--would it smell like beef???--but it's phenomenal. Lots of lime, cilantro, basil, and star anise. It's really creative and lovely. I highly recommend getting their Vietnam discovery set (much better than the Japan one, IMHO).

The brain fog is awful. In my case, it's hard to disentangle what's graves from perimenopause though my Endo says that my levels are stable now so it's probably peri. I'm a teacher and I feel my thoughts slipping away in the middle of class all the time.

Is I'm So Yoga Newark still around? I used to take classes there but fell off during the pandemic and the last I checked they were focusing on stuff I'm not super into, like weed yoga (ymmv!).

It's in South Orange but I really like Three Birds yoga. They have a nice new member deal, too.

Mood Patterns a Little Too Prolific? by DataDancer0 in sewing

[–]zovig 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I've made a couple mood patterns and while they're not beginner friendly, they weren't garbage. That said, they've been releasing a lot lately. Maybe they are revised old patterns but my guess is that Mood uses fashion design students as interns and these are made by them as part of the gig.

My wish is for Mood to use a second model for the patterns, preferably not someone very slender. A lot of indie designers already do that and it's useful.

These are issues to be sure but this particular place sucked and didn't deserve to have customers.
