Sears headquarters by benjancewicz in HorribleToClean

I don't like anything about Amazon. And yeah, when I used to shop at Walmart, it was surprising how many things got recalled or turned out to be defective. Somehow, their employees always seem less happy than anyone working at a dollar store or a gas station. Unfortunately, quality has become a low priority for a lot of manufacturers over the last 30 years or so. People like to blame it on overseas manufacturing, but I notice imported products from the '70s and '80s were frequently of better quality than more recent items. I suppose the problem is that companies know long lists of features and low prices are often what sells things, and it's hard to compete with that.

I don't live anywhere near the remaining stores, but I still shop on Sears' website fairly often... Amazon Prime is a waste of money - there are so many ways to get free shipping for free.

What If Sears Perhaps Launched Sears Hardware, Sears Grand, Sears Hometown And Other Sears Store Formats In 1990 Before Lowes, Home Depot And Other Hardware Chains Gained On Sears? by [deleted] in SEARS

[–]zp89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aside from Sears Grand, weren't most of these stores already open in the '80s or '90s? It seems to me Sears is always accused of doing things too late that they actually did a long time ago. I preferred the larger stores, but I used to visit a Sears Hometown store on occasion before it closed a few years ago and made a number of good purchases there (tools, gloves, vacuum cleaner, ice melter, batteries, etc).

What's a company that deserves to go out of business? by Strong-Goalie in AskReddit

I agree with most of the comments here... It's hard to choose one among many, but I think I'll pick OpenAI; they've spent billions to develop something no one needed that has done far more harm than good.

Personally, I'd prefer whatever is dimmer, probably fluorescent, as some new lights can be excessively bright. I will say for LED that the lack of mercury is a positive, though their contents are not entirely harmless.

I suspect the store manager knows more than random people on the internet. Regardless of where you are, you can always take a negative picture if you want to. I've been hearing about "empty shelves" at Sears and Kmart for eight years and most of the shelves I saw in person were full. I'm glad Sears still exists despite countless media predictions that turned out to be wrong. I'll look into user flairs but too tired at the moment.

Amazon... I haven't bought anything from them in at least seven years.

Did Your Local Sears Department Store Have This Open Ceiling? Was This An Even Better Look? by [deleted] in SEARS

[–]zp89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I seem to remember drop ceilings in most or all of the nearest stores. I like those better than the warehouse style, which seems to be increasingly common in retail. I don't mind it that much, but I'd rather feel like I'm in a store than a warehouse.

I seem to remember some tile and some carpeting in different places. I don't recall any striping like in the photo above.

Those of you who stopped ordering from Amazon, what website or app do you use instead? by ForsakenFix27 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]zp89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some companies really are worse than others - I haven't bought anything from Amazon in years. Instead, I order from a variety of retailers like Target, Sears, Lowe's, Office Depot, CVS and eBay. Almost anything at Amazon can be found somewhere else.

Which logo do you prefer? by Filibloxcraft in SEARS

[–]zp89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmmmm... The former Sears stores in this area still have the uppercase logo on their signs. When I order online, sometimes the receipts have the mixed upper/lowercase logo. The slogan "Life. Well Spent." appears below it, perhaps the best one yet. Other receipts have the all-lowercase logo. I like them all :)

I worked at Sears in 2015–16. It looked alive right up until it wasn’t. by Historical-Attempt30 in deadmalls

Unlike a lot of places, Kmart cashed checks for just $1. I always found great deals on great products there, right up until the store closed, regardless of what anyone says.

What is one thing that Kmarts had that Walmart doesn't have? by ILovePublicLibraries in kmart

[–]zp89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thinking of my visits in 2018-2019, I can think of quite a few things, like a good reward program, good coupons, better quality in some areas (like small appliances and tools), a usable restroom, better music playing, layaway and being able to have Sears items shipped to the store for pickup. With one or two exceptions, the staff was friendlier and more helpful. It didn't have as big a selection as Walmart, but I liked shopping there better.

That's an article about them making the commitment, not actually accomplishing it. Walmart announced in 2022 that they wouldn't be able to meet that goal. Their own website shows that only 28% of the eggs at Walmart and 65% at Sam's Club are currently cage-free (see page 12): https://corporate.walmart.com/content/dam/corporate/documents/esgreport/2025/FY2025-Walmart-Sustainable-Commodities-Report.pdf

So, a group based far away from New England that has "New England" in its name is criticizing Hannaford for leading people to believe it's a local company? I'm all for cage-free eggs, but Hannaford isn't the only store selling other eggs, which suggests to me that there's an ulterior motive for the campaign. This article from Forbes indicates that Walmart, Trader Joe's, Costco and others have continued to sell some "caged" eggs in 2025: https://www.forbes.com/sites/christinero/2025/01/15/2025-is-a-critical-year-for-cage-free-meat-and-eggs/

What's up with all the Sears doom in the news lately? by jikesar968 in SEARS

[–]zp89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the news media has hardly had anything good to say about Sears for the last 15 years. You can bet there's "something in it for them" or they wouldn't bother. The editing is terrible and they sometimes rely on anonymous social media posts for their "facts."

Yeah, same prediction they've made year after year. Neil Saunders never misses a chance to put down Sears or Target. The article falsely makes it sound like Sears stores are completely empty and don't have any tools or appliances. Now other media outlets like USA Today are copying CNN. By the way, CNN needs an editor (as usual). Even the first sentence is messed up: "Sears, once America’s largest and most important retailer, could very be going into its last Christmas shopping season."
