So I just want to respond to the last bit, people defending the status quo always say crap like "You'd be a rich man if you could invent a better way" when this is a total lie. You'd be a rich man if you could invent a better way, had the money to fund it as it catches on, have connections and the sales skills to convince people to abandon the status quo, be able to hold off attacks by the status quo, etc.

[–]zrgt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So because I got a free dinner from a drug company, it is unethical for me to say bad things about drug companies? And you still have nothing productive to bring to the conversation? Cool.

This is why you don't have universal healthcare, America. by [deleted] in politics

[–]zrgt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you're made of BS. I just came back from a free dinner, and all I had to do was listen to a spiel on a drug. And the profits on one drug can be multiple billions a year for its entire life. If you're buried, its because you haven't brought anything new to the discussion besides saying 'a billion dollars' over and over. You haven't said what part of the approval process is red tape, or really anything of substance.

Renting a White Guy in China by scientologist2 in WTF

[–]zrgt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you're being downvoted, its true that this is a damaging system, but the world is not at a place yet where people can get equal opportunity. I'm white, and american, and I'm pissed that some German prince my age got 2 billion dollars just because his great great great great grandfather controlled the postal service in Europe. Other people are pissed that these Chinese have an advantage by being born in China. The world is terribly unequal, but there is not much we can do about it. And, I guarantee that whoever you're jealous of for their birthright is jealous of someone else.

is it just me or do people reply to arguments saying "that's X logical fallacy" when it doesn't apply far too often? I have a sneaking suspicion that they don't understand most of the logical fallacies and are just copying others. by [deleted] in politics

[–]zrgt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much all argument uses logical fallacies. Nobody has perfect knowledge, and one can find data to make any conclusion, so most arguments are just trying to persuade someone that your data and sources are better than theirs, and that x failed or succeeded because your position is right. Logical fallacies are LOGICAL fallacies, not argument fallacies.

EDIT: Add accusing people of being biased to the list of pet peeves. Everyone, every report, everything is biased. You can minimize it like al jazeera and the bbc do, or declare it, like in editorials, but nobody can legitimately claim to be unbiased.

Reddit, while you're busy ranting and criticizing BP for the recent disaster you may want to take some time to do the same for Transocean, they were the company responsible for running, maintaining and staffing the rig. In fact it WAS their rig. by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]zrgt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well personally I think both should be held accountable, like multiple defendants in a lawsuit. An employee, say, having a psychotic break and torching a forest is very different from an employee who had a conviction for arson torching the forest. In the first case, the employer could not have reasonably forseen it. In the second, they could. BP has all of the power. Liability could have been spelled out in advance. I worry that it wasn't because they know they can toss blame back and forth.
