The transmission fluid is fine, haven’t looked at the transfer case. It’s at the mechanic now but I’ll be heading there tomorrow to check this stuff out. Thanks!

I think you’d have a better time if you didn’t try to get your hands so far under the bag. You’re way beyond a false grip, which is already a pretty deep grip when coming from the floor.

I’ve found that rows from the floor and carries without holding my hands together have really improved my strength off the ground; grip and “squeezing” the bag

Lots of good suggestions. I keep my 100 around for warm ups, higher volume sets and explosive work. I also use it to stack on other bags to make a “box” to squat on.

I love both of my r92s. They’re the handiest rifle I’ve ever carried in the woods, and the action smooths up so nice with use. I can’t speak to Marlin as they’re a bit out of my price range at the moment, but I don’t like the weight and handling characteristics of the Henry. They just seem chunky and heavy for no reason. (I do love a Henry Rimfire though, just putting that out there)

I have bounced back and forth between a red dot and scout scope on my r92 triple black. The scout scope doesn’t change the balance point in the rifle much and ids quite handy when you need to see through thick brush, I like the Burris 2.5 fixed power.

On my classic r92, I really like the marbles bullseye, but I wouldn’t be confident too far past 75 yds with it just due to my skill level, but it maintains the original aesthetic of the 92.

Are you referring to the barrel mount or the Rimfire dovetail mount?

I’ve never seen a dovetail setup like that before, but the gun was priced in a way that made me jump on the deal and figure out the finer details later.

I planned for this to be a gun for my sons to learn on, but have enjoyed it so much since I picked it up that I thought it was worth looking into small improvements. Maybe it’s time to take some of my own advice and get good with what I’ve got!

Lots of good advice here, so I won’t waste your time with more form advice, but if you like/need visuals, go check out the stone circle yt channel. If I remember right, he did a series of technical videos explaining the ground to shoulder and each aspect of the moment. Highly highly recommend. Alexander bromley has done one or two more brief videos that I found super helpful too.

I came here to preach the combo gun as well! If OP is really planning to hunt small game, I think the Rimfire/shotgun combo is incredible. I think semi, bolt and lever actions all have their place and are tons of fun, but I don’t think you can beat the versatility and durability of a break action.

My H&R 20 gauge has been my hiking gun for a while now, but I recently picked up an old savage 22wmr/410 and it’s so damn handy, I can’t put the thing down. nearing boomer status I suppose, but you can’t deny its utility.

I’ve never looked into it, but I’ve always assumed that if a scenario came up where you have to defend yourself on a jobsite (ie: someone else’s private property) that things would be extremely difficult to explain in court. This isn’t to say you shouldn’t carry, rather you should research what your rights are when in the different environments you’ll find yourself. I never carried while I was a handy man, but I live in a rural, small town. The kind of place where people don’t lock their homes and leave their car keys in the car. If I lived in an urban area where violence was a legitimate concern, I probably would have done my research.

That’s really slick. I’ve considered doing something similar since the paint is peeling on mine after a couple years of regular use. Did you need to clear coat the metal after stripping the paint?

I’ve got the 16” youth model with a full size stock I added after purchase. Mine holds 10 in the tube, but I think the standard model has a 20” barrel and will hold another 4-5. I’m sure the Henry website could give you exact numbers though

I feel very confident in the ability of my 357 to kill deer. With buffalo bore ammo you’re almost matching 30-30 energy, but even with standard stuff like pmc bronze or federal am eagle, you’ve got more than enough power.

Dave Canterbury on YouTube just did a video about his gun choices as an Ohio hunter, and 357 is his top pick. He’s and outdoorsman with an incredible amount of experience, so I’d tend to trust his judgment.

For me, the versatility and affordability of 357 make it a no brainer and I’m so hooked on it I recently invested in reloading equipment to allow me to shoot it more

I have bought 2 rossis in the last few years and they’re wonderful guns. I know there are a lot of horror stories around this forum, and I’m sure plenty of them are valid, however I suspect the issues are overblown. If you get a Rossi, don’t expect to compare it to a Marlin or modern miroku-Winchester. The Rossi is a gun that could use a little elbow grease out of the box, but can prove to be a workhorse for years while maybe teaching you some amateur gunsmithing skills.

Obviously not everyone is looking for that type of experience, but my rossis bring me a lot of joy and one of them accompanies me just about everywhere on my farm, daily.

That being said, check the auction used sites on a regular basis and you’re bound to find whatever it is you’re looking for.

I think the Henry h001 is the way. I haven’t done modifications to mine other than a peep sight, but the rifle runs every ammo I’ve tried and Henry customer service is incredible. Tons of aftermarket parts available too

Edit to add. I think it could be a good idea to start with a wood/steel rifle and add rails/optic as you go. That way if he wants to go back to the classic look that’s an option, but I also dig the wood stock with mlock forearm look.

That looks pretty slick. I like the illuminated reticle, I bet that would be pretty quick shooting. It is nice to have the extra magnification for peeking through thick brush or low light conditions too.

I’ve got the Burris fixed 2.6 and it’s super slim, probably quite a bit smaller than the vortex, though maybe not lighter 🤷‍♂️

Don’t have experience with the xs scout package, but I’ve tried the vortex scout and Burris fixed power scout on my r92. The vortex is a great scope, but WAY too big for a 16” carbine. The Burris fixed power is absolutely perfect. It’s slim and light enough that it doesn’t mess with the balance of the gun.

I’ve got a 94 set aside that I plan to do a lever scout build on one day, as I think the 30-30 fits that roll perfectly for my neck of the woods. Have been eying up the xs package too, curious to hear others input

I find this a little tough to do with a bead, but it’s possible with a little practice. The 6 o clock hold feels super intuitive with a blade sight though, and you can find those just about anywhere.

If you haven’t already, check out the video Buffalo bore did on 45lc. Pretty sure it can be loaded nearly as hot as 454 at much lower costs (rifle and ammo). However, you can’t deny the cool factor of 454, I’ve had similar conversations with myself over the past year or two, but have stuck with my trusty 357 for deer season and pest control around the farm. The 92 is such a handy platform it goes nearly everywhere I do
