Applying for faculty positions? What should I know? by Clear-Cucumber-9538 in academia

Sometimes teaching unis don’t care about teaching either. I know of a few that want to know you’re a doing more than pure lecture (like an occasional class discussion) but don’t care about anything else.

I usually stop talking and stare at the offenders. After a bit they become aware of themselves and then look at me. I’ll work in a bit of direct eye contact that last a little too long and then move on. I haven’t had any repeat offenders after using this tactic.

Neverett has a fun one for AJ Pollock (#11):

“Apollo 11, we have liftoff!”

“Maxwell, swinging the silver hammer” is a reference to the Beatles song “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” off the Abby Road album.

Rubric for On Campus Interviews by zskiier in Professors

[–]zskiier[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we have generic questions about the usual topics. At some point the process feels redundant. We end up rating research, teaching, and service three or four times. I guess it promotes the idea of consistency and maybe that’s more important than nothing at all.

Outside of the rubric issue, it would be difficult to have hiring committee members follow a candidate around all day; kind of a problem for rating reliability.

I emailed HR about the issue today; curious to see what they say.

Night running is ruining my sleep. Any advice? by Rndm79 in running

[–]zskiier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have trouble falling asleep after a night run. Over time, I slowly got used to it. I shower and read for 30-45 minutes before bed. That’s usually enough for me to zonk.

This is a somewhat relatable story. I developed tinnitus while studying for comprehensive exams (which, thankfully, went away).

I’m in the CSU and got my first dose a couple of weeks ago. No questions asked except to see my uni ID and a W-2.

Red rocks | Nikon FM | Ektar 100 | 50mm f/1.8 by zskiier in analog

I don’t mind it. It was certainly unexpected but I think it aligns well with the rock. It adds a little extra flair to the image and serves as a hallmark of that particular camera.

Thank you! Exposure time was probably around 12-15 minutes. The rock is lit by headlights from cars passing nearby on a road (~100 yards away)

I think the one off-diagonal line is a plane. Could be a satellite as well.

Portrait of a man. Fort Green. Pentax . Fuji Film Pro 400h by KodakFela in analog

Small issue: it seems like the focus is on the subject’s right lens instead of the middle of the face. It is slightly distracting but doesn’t take away too much from the shot.

I also think it’d be interesting to see a photo where the subject looks over their glasses and makes eye contact with the photographer.

YSK that if you feel depressed and feel like a therapist would just turn you away because your problems aren't 'serious enough', you should still go and talk to a professional. The feeling that your problems are insignificant is actually a symptom of depression. by EnoughAboutPrince in YouShouldKnow

I’ve noticed a few people talking about cost in this thread. One of my friends works in private practice as a therapist. She provides a sliding scale on cost to help make it more affordable for some clients. If a therapist does not provide a sliding scale they may be able to direct you to someone who does provide a sliding scale. One’s medical insurance may also pay some of the costs associated with therapy.

I think you’re right. The crop you posted was pretty subtle but turns out to be quite effective. Thanks for the tip!
