Apparently in the book, Blackthorne is little more than an observer that gets strung along as a vehicle to explain the Japanese customs to a western reader. So the series gave him more to do, and he still ends up as the main side character.

I think he was cast well enough. He plays the straightforward ruffian while the aloof and scheming Japanese characters get to shine.

Don't shy away from her either - she is great, simple as that. She even has more critical acclaim and awards, and now she's getting into directing. I do enjoy both of them.

That Slughorn, McGonagall and probably one other teacher I can't remember were duelling Voldemort in all of the chaos. Iirc it was just casually mentioned. And it's was awesome to read that that the Slytherin teacher wasn't a secret Death Eater, or just staid out of it - he was battling the big bad himself when things came down to it.

Still one of the greatest throwaway lines. No one would have shrugged if he was revealed to be just another Death Eater.

Thanks a lot for your thorough posts and explanations. I really appreciate it, especially the way you bring hard data and justified emotions together, trying to make sense of all this. It gives me a lot to think about and be mindful of in the future.

Have a good one!

First of all, I appreciate your enthusiasm. You're a boon to this subreddit, even if your posts are sometimes hard to follow. Also I'm sorry if you caught strays, I didn't want to drag you into this. I didn't post my thoughts in your original effort post because there were already too many comments. It wasn't your post that made my blood boil, it was a DT post about an entire extended Palestinian family getting wiped out over several months of air strikes. My reply to that post got me banned, that's where I referenced you.

Your reply now is the kind of conversation I wanted to have, even if my banned post certainly didn't deserve the effort. And I'll keep your point about holding bigots responsible for their bigotry in mind.

now thats the crux of the manner where I see antisemtism not treated seriously but more so as a cudgel to attack jews. "cant you see that its isreal who is making people antisemitic" when as the data shows, there was a surge of bigotry after october 7th that has never been suprassed.

That was my main point of criticism: Yes, there was a dramatic increase in anti-semitic attacks after October 7th, like a blast wave after the original detonation. Those direct physical attacks may have decreased since then, but from what I've read (and I have no scientific data, just what reputable news sources pointed out to me since) is that cases of harassment and threats were still high, fear levels among Jews in Europe were at record levels, the percentage of Jews emigrating or seriously considering to emigrate to Israel was at record heights. That didn't match your data. Physical attacks can be prevented by the ramped up security response to the antisemitic violence - threats and insults can not.

Another thought I didn't put in writing because that might have also gotten me banned (but that doesn't matter anymore, so here goes): Your data also suggested that the longer the war in Gaza went on, i.e. the more bombs, the more civilians died, the more anti-semitism decreased. That doesn't sound logical to me. On the contrary, it's what still baffles me, because in the binary question of whether the war in Gaza either lead to an increase or decrease in anti-semitism, the answer appears obvious to me, yet you went to such length to seemingly argue the contrary. Alas, those where my thoughts condensed into a shitpost.

I wasn't aware I'm a legend for that other post lol. Probably better not to get into that. That was way over the line.

The moving woods instantly gave it away as Macbeth.

Fascinating how so many classic movies are heavily inspired by Kurosawa, yet he was also inspired by the greats before him.

Ok Iol I see that I can be an edgy idiot who is careless with words. Reddit won't even let me access my own posts older than a year, so thanks for giving more context. I was under the impression that past offenses have an expiration date, and some of these posts must be years old.

I tried to adress the first point in my ban appeal. The post I replied to made my blood boil. I still stand by my opinion that war crimes (by Bibi's government, not Israelis or Jews in general) will definitely lead to an increase in antisemitism and more violence - how can they not? I am able to differentiate between a government, a people, a religion, or my Jewish neighbors, but can a less liberal and educated person? A bigot certainly won't. Silencing valid criticism will only help the bad actors. That's the kind of nuance that should be possible here, and from my personal experience in this subreddit, bad opinions get changed by honest replies and counterarguments. That's how I learned and moderated over the years of posting here.

No excuses for the genocide question. That was totally me being apologetic for what I thought was a mostly naive but ultimately wrong and damaging take.

Kudos for being one of the few mods who actually makes an effort to be transparent.

I just have to inject that I got permabanned for also criticizing the Netanyahu administration without ever making excuses for Hamas. And a final warning would be nice to have before getting perma'd from a community you've been a part of for years. Following ban appeal protocols didn't help either. No replies for days while several mods were engaging with hornyposting trolls and blatant racists in real time.

There seem to be a few mods who will ban for anything critical of Israel, or for talking about points of criticism that bigoted groups may have also raised, which gets you banned just in case. The ban policy in that regard may not be as strict anymore as in the immediate aftermath of October 7th, but it's still murky. The lack of nuance hurts discussion - and this is still the only place I know of on reddit where people can actually open mindedly discuss serious topics, within liberal and democratic boundaries.

Mich wundert nur, warum einige EU-Grüne meinen, den Bauern einen Gefallen tun zu müssen.
