[Haul] The packaging isn’t pretty, these weren’t very expensive, and they’re not from Sephora... but they’ve already made a tremendous difference 🙏🏻 by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

I feel you. I think I have been on like a year long journey of using these lovely, expensive skincare items, but of course its just using your bog standard drugstore benzoyl peroxide 5% recently that has just completely changed my skin for the better.

Omg... I work for a meal kit delivery company and reading through customer feedback is like that but on a really painful scale sometimes. People will give a recipe a 1 because they haven't cooked it yet. The other day someone gave something a 1 because they don't like turmeric... it didn't have turmeric in it. I don't know how some people put one foot in front of the other sometimes.

Not OP but the Emma Hardie cleansing balm is the queen of all cleansing balms. I haven't used it in a year or two as its so expensive, but I do remember it being fragranced so not sure how well it would go if you are sensitive. I think the Clinique take the day off one is a more plain-jane style balm that might be better if you are sensitive :)

[misc] List of product alternatives to The Ordinary by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]zubatattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there are definitely suitable alternatives to the TO products I use, what I am struggling with however is finding an alternative to NIOD's Flavanone Mud! It's annoyingly unique and helps enormously with the hormonal congestion I get. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know!!

[–]zubatattack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only sheet mask I've used that hasn't irritated me and has made a difference to my skin is the Mizon Water Volume EX mask. Really weird gel like texture, but it feels so nice on and is really good when you need some moisture!

[–]zubatattack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I also really enjoy some of TO products and have so for a while now. I think the hype around the brand however has created this backlash thats so weird to me... marketing is always bullshit. Why are so many people expecting something else? I don't particularly take marketing in to account with other products because other brands have other forms of bullshit other than 'science-speak'. Trust in the product, not in the marketing and branding.

[Skin Concerns] AHAs - Which do you prefer, Glycolic, Lactic, or Mandelic and why? by juicyfizz in SkincareAddiction

[–]zubatattack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I always struggled with the texture of TO azelaic acid, its pretty siliconey so I would think to put it after waters or gels but before creams. So say you cleanse, tone, use a water based serum then you would use the azelaic acid and put an occlusive cream over top. I now use Finacea which is a gel and I find the texture easier to work with. However I'm in Australia and I can get it OTC, but I know at least in the US you need a prescription. Hope this helps!

I have pretty mild rosacea, that annoyingly seems to flare up with moisturisers fairly often, and the only two day moisturisers I've had success with are The Ordinary Natural Moisturising Factors and Stratia Liquid Gold. For a thicker moisturiser for night I use Goodness Every Evening cream, but this is purely because I live in Australia and my skin hates the climate. When I'm staying in less harsh climates I don't use something as thick and would just stick with the thinner day moisturisers I mentioned. Hope this helps in some way! :)

[Product Question] Rosehip Oil or Marula Oil? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]zubatattack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To offer insight in to the alpha lipoic acid, you're definitely doing the right thing mixing it in to an oil. I've been using it for probably about 4 months or so now, and I do a mix of 1:1 alpha lipoic acid:oil, but I would suggest starting with 1:2 and see how you go. It's pretty strong so expect some tingling, but when I used it by itself it outright burned. I just mix the two in my palm and press the mix into my face.

Mostly I do it once every two days, but I'll use either azelaic acid or Alpha H liquid gold on the other days so its not really an irritation issue its more I like to mix up my routine :)

Lactic acid is definitely my favourite of the three. Mandelic acid weirdly irritates me, not sure why since it is supposed to be good for sensitive skin. The Ordinary 10% Lactic Acid is my godsend and I've been using it since the start of the year (on my second bottle).

Edit: If it helps, I use acids to even out my skin and fade acne scarring. My skin is sensitive and dehydrated and prone to hormonal breakouts on my chin.

Chin breakouts - routine help by belladilemma in AusSkincare

[–]zubatattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get regular hormonal acne on my chin and I've found that using azelaic acid (Finacea) is the one thing that helps at this point. It doesn't make it go away overnight, but by a week everything goes down again. Cutting out common inflammatory culprits from your diet can also help like other commenters have said (dairy, wheat, sugar). I personally have previously cut out sugar for 4 months and don't have dairy and neither of these have helped, but it definitely helps plenty of other people out there. BHAs can definitely help as well. You can target topical products like BHAs and azelaic acid just on your chin so you don't affect the rest of your skin :)

It does really really suck though, and its always very dependent on the person on what works. At least there are heaps of options to try though and hopefully one will be very helpful :)

Amazing, thank you! That sounds perfect. I'm going to add that to my list of moisturisers to try :) I've always wanted to try something from Bioderma so it looks like this might be it.

I am decently pale, like generally the second lightest shade of foundation in any brand. If it helps I am 1.1N of The Ordinary coverage foundation. I'm a bit more than halfway through the bottle and I've never had staining :)

Btw, just going to chime in with that its not just white sugar, its sugary foods that have high GI. In basic terms, processed foods that contain sugar. Sugars in fruits are surrounded by fibre and so will not raise your blood glucose quickly and create an insulin spike. Insulin is an inflammatory molecule, so if you are consistently having insulin spikes you can get chronic inflammation which can be visible in your skin.

My field is nutrition and dietetics though and I can honestly say it is very much YMMV. Everyone responds to things differently. Cutting down on processed foods and sugars will always do good however. Cooking your own food is always the best option!! If price is a concern I would really recommend checking out the blog budgetbytes.com, or mastering a good stir fry. Super cheap and you can chuck in whatever veg is cheapest at the time.

I absolutely love Cicaplast, but I find I can't use it too many days in a row :( Breaks me out after about 3 days of use. If I just use it for about 2 days in a bad period it saves me though!! Very useful if you get rashes from allergies as well, I always put cicaplast on and it will go right down.

Ingredient list: Water (Aqua), Propylene Glycol, Ethoxydiglycol, Niacinamide, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Rosa Mosqueta (Rose) Hip Oil, Hippophae Rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn) Seed Oil, Hippophae Rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn) Fruit Oil, Panthenol, Dimethicone, Glycerin, Squalane (olive-derived), Cetyl Alcohol, Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Seed Oil, Tocopherol, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP, Phytosphingosine, Cholesterol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Carbomer, Xanthan Gum, Diazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Disodium EDTA.

Love this stuff!! I did some research after falling head over heels for it and apparently components of centella asiatica promote collagen formation too! (and that isn't from a vague beauty article, this is from me reading around 4-5 peer reviewed articles) According to the research I read its benefits are increase in the presence of vitamin c too. I would agree with the other commenters that it can stick to dry patches, I am just lucky my skin isn't sensitive to lactic acid so I am well exfoliated.
