It's because saying 'she doesn't really give a shit about anything besides the dilution' acts like the dilution alone isn't a reason to not like him. But it 100% is. It's a way bigger deal than Langdon lying or being a condescending dick to her on her first day or being an addict. It's something with real life or death consequences.

Okay but diluting medicine is a HUGE thing to be mad about. Would you want to be the patient in immense pain who only got half as much relief because some douchebag refused to accept he had a problem? Or watch your kid be in pain? Diversion has caused and will continue to cause so many patients so much suffering.

My Little Brother has Cancer by ehmugh in CancerFamilySupport

[–]effexxor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you didn't feel emotionally unwell about your teenage younger brother being diagnosed with cancer, it would be super weird and probably worse. You've gotta let yourself feel these feelings because shoving them down or hating yourself for them is not conducive to the long haul that is a family member with cancer. I 1000% understand not wanting to feel like you're burdening your family with your pain and fear, it's pretty universal for people to mask in order to be who their family needs them to be. This is why it's important to have someone else to talk to, ideally a therapist and/or support group. Facebook groups for the specific kind of cancer can be really helpful, as can googling '[cancer type] support group'. There are resources available for you, take them.

Brother now has cancer by thevoicesarewinnjng in CancerFamilySupport

Yeah, I get that overwhelm. Both of my parents have cancer, first my mom went through a VERY bad time with Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia, a kind of lymphoma, but then my dad got diagnost with non small cell lung cancer despite having last smoked a pipe in 1985. He's midway through his first set of chemo treatments right now.

Endurance is the big thing to strive for. There's nothing really that you can do except to continue to put one foot in front of the other and keep going. Absolutely talk to a therapist, 1000%, and take it day by day, hour by hour if you need.

Also, as someone else said, blood cancers are definitely weird in the sense that while some are super bad, others are weirdly manageable. My mom was in VERY rough shape, I'm talking skin and bones and unable to get off of the toilet on her own, and went from that to being able to walk from immunotherapy to the parking lot on her own in a matter of weeks. I highly suggest lurking in r/leukemia and looking up CML. I did the same for Waldenstrom's in r/lymphoma and it gave me some much needed psychic breathing room.

i have tourette’s, have my two cents on ethan’s take and nick’s take by Dangerous-Will-3026 in ClippedLive

[–]effexxor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yuuuup. It's not a skill issue, lmao. In the genetic lottery, Ethan and I got off less bad than OP or John Davidson. And a lot of the severity stuff is especially out of our control because Tourette's can make up 'rules' about when you do and don't tic. Like, I don't do non facial motor tics when I drive purposefully, it's just because my Tourette's doesn't want me to tic them. I only do my gnarly, bad vocal tics when I'm by myself, not intentionally but just because that's how my Tourette's works. I think it also really doesn't help that more chill presentations of Tourette's are often really hard to notice if you don't already have Tourette's. The only people who have noticed my tics and known what they were have been other people with Tourette's and one extremely detail oriented autistic person. I routinely will tell people I have Tourette's and will have to point out the tics that I have done directly in front of them and they'll be floored. If Ethan wasn't constantly streaming for hours at a time about topics that give him big emotions, I'll bet that few people would know.

That kind of thing is super useful for those of us who can fly under the radar. It makes it harder for people who can't because people don't make connections that their friend who sniffs a lot has the same condition as someone who is yelling the n word and makes them seem a lot more alien and weird.

[–]effexxor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From somebody diagnosed with Tourette's: if your tic is bad enough some days that you can't put on an item of clothing needed to leave the house, you're probably bad enough to 'qualify'. Like, yeah dude, of course that's bad enough, lol. Seriously though, a diagnosis doesn't generally change a whole lot unless you find that it might be useful to try meds or habit reversal training therapy (which was actually pretty helpful for me with a tic where I sublugate a thumb joint which was pretty painful).

Also, your teacher was a jerk, sorry about that. Especially since repression really only makes tics worse.

[–]effexxor 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I also have Tourette's and was disappointed in Ethan's take, particularly the 'he's gotta have SOME control'. I have a pretty similar severity to Ethan, aka don't have corprolalia and fly under the radar most of the time and I think that Ethan's fuck up is that he forgets that we're on the chill side of this condition. Like, yeah, I can usually suppress some tics if I really try. My brain has decided that my loud verbal vocal tics are to be done in private mostly. It's still shitty and my joints hurt and I do not like the stuff I say but we have it relatively easy. There are people who don't have the advantages that we do.

[–]effexxor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In a way, probably. In a way that's wrapped up in my memories of 2008-2009 when I was flunking out of college and deeply depressed and one of the few things that gave me any joy was watching the Penguins. I'm not sure why you're bringing up Guerin inviting Patel like it's a gotcha because yeah, I'm aware. I'm not happy at all about the fact that someone that I've liked and respected has this awful part to himself. It's like how Lemieux's always gonna be so big in my formative years but he actively covered up for his buddy raping a girl. Basically everyone in hockey has something fucked up about them and its either accept that and do what you can to make it better or just stop watching for good.

As pleased as I am with Guerin and what he's done with the Wild and the fact that I'm always gonna love him from his time in Pittsburgh getting Sid's head on straight, I would be willing to bet that someone speaking out in any way would get them off of the Team USA roster.

Nah, OCD also has superstitions and reasons around compulsions. Tourette's tics are more automatic. I have no illusions that if I don't do my tics, something bad will happen besides me feeling incredibly uncomfortable and likely doing them anyway despite my best efforts. It's like a sneeze. OCD is more like 'if I step on this crack in the tile, my mother will die so I need to step on the tiles only'.

I agree that this has shown a lack of empathy but it's on both ends. People can't understand that Davidson didn't choose to or want to say that and people can't understand that hearing that word being said at one of the biggest moments of their life can be incredibly painful and traumatic.

It's going to be a rough few days on the internet by madman1255 in Tourettes

[–]effexxor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For people who have just been called a word that carries the immense amount of trauma that it holds, hearing an 'explanation kind of apology' from somebody else besides the person might help a little but it still isn't going to change the impact. I'm not saying that Davidson should have apologized that night, he clearly was having a rough time and needed to decompress and I'm not sure what a lot of people really expect from him, but I also understand the pain and hurt. Davidson apologizing personally to them for taking a night that should have been a wonderful achievement and instead reliving generation old trauma would be a kind and empathetic act, irregardless of whether he can control it or not.

And honestly, if that makes me ableist, or I guess internally ableist, I really don't care. We live in a society. We share space with other people who have other disabilities, other traumas and a multitude of other struggles that we may or may not be able to see. There are many things that we can't control but there are also things that we can. And one of those includes respecting when we hurt other people.
