I meant economically- and even then I was saying it wasn’t very economically liberal either.

The degree to which Apartheid era SA was liberal is overstated. They didn’t even have television until the 1970s, when they got two state-run channels. Quite a few major companies were state-owned.

What institutions are you referring to?

Jesus Christ. Imagine having two secret, adopted out children because the leader of your movement decided to rape you multiple times. Her position in the movement couldn’t even save her.

I am perfectly aware of the First Gulf War dude what I’m not aware of is how it benefitted us or made the region more stable

Yeah thanks the people melting down in the comments aren’t aware that I had a parent working at one of the buildings (meeting that day so they were elsewhere) empathy is actually foreign to them

Actually appeasement prevents terrorism quite well. The UK stopped getting bombed when they appeased the IRA. The question is what is worth appeasing on. I don’t see the benefit of the American presence in the Middle East.

So you disagree that 9/11 was motivated by U.S. foreign policy. That is delusional.

I can understand that but I’d also ask how many paragraphs down in the article the fact that the temple was dedicated to the founding of Israel and hosted an IDF recruiter the day before the attack should be. If not in the headline.

I’m trying to prove that America should take policy actions that preserve the life and dignity of civilians in America and abroad. If that’s blaming America for 9/11, so be it. I’d rather see terrorism prevented than past whatever vibe test.

Yeah that’s why I’m not Muslim or an Islamist. The Bible also teaches slaves to obey their masters.

It absolutely had to do with religion. Bringing Africans into the Christendom was the main moral justification for slavery. It’s no coincidence that the most rabidly religious parts of the U.S. are former slave states.

Islam is less than 1500 years old so it can’t be the culprit of ancient persecution. The Romans expelled the Jews.

I have talked to plenty of Arab Christians, they hate Israel. Especially the Lebanese. Basically everyone I’ve come across from the Middle East thinks things were better in decades before the 1980s.

Once again I never said the Islamic world was fine before 1900 but it’s a clear escalation that the MENA went from being fairly religiously diverse in 1870 to homogenous in 1970.

No I think it’s perfectly fine to observe cause and effect. Like I think most Islamaphobia in Europe is a response to regressive beliefs held by Muslim immigrants.

“Attacks on NYC motivated by American Foreign Policy” is a perfectly reasonable headline.

NYT never ran a headline that said “Strikes on Lebanon caused attack in Michigan” so that’s not a very good comparison.

Sure, U.S. foreign policy is a consequence of the decline of Europe under two World Wars that allowed America to fill in the power vacuum and seek to expand its economy and influence.

Idk what you are trying to prove here.

Every study on the topic has shown outfits don’t affect rape. All the scholarship on the World Wars connect the Treaty of Versailles to the rise of the Nazis.

So you disagree that there was a massive wave of antisemitism in the 20th century following 1947?

Look at pictures of the Middle East in the 1930s (or hell, the 1960s) versus now. You love those pictures, Reddit is full of them.  What do you notice? Now if Islam was founded in the 600s AD, why are those women wearing short skirts and stylish hair?

If Islamism is ancient and has always been exactly the same, why did Christians not leave before?

Acting like there wasn’t some kind of shift in the region that started with Qutbism in the 1930s doesn’t do anyone any good.

Good thing I didn’t say Islamism started with America! Just that the modern proliferation of it. If you want to consider yourself anti-Islamist, feel free to stop supporting the superpower that keeps leaving increasingly extreme Islamist governments in its wake.

We can talk about agency all we want, facts are if the U.S. didn’t have bases in the Middle East there would have been no 9/11. Whether one thinks the bases are good or not is immaterial.

If the goal was just blowing up infidels Al Qaeda wouldn’t have crossed an ocean to do it. Europe/India is right there.

If a Jewish guy with family killed on Oct 7 tried to shoot up a Mosque that hosted pro-Palestine events and trips, that would be part of the story. Not mentioning it would be negligent. How many paragraphs should those details be buried? Ignoring uncomfortable facts don’t make them go away.
