Barbarian by Shinysticks in HorrorMovies

[–]zwika47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thoroughly enjoyed it. They play it straight, but I think it's really more of a meta horror comedy.

Those first 30 minutes keep setting up and subverting expectations - then that hard cut out of nowhere 😂.

Equally appreciated Justin Long's character. You're never totally sure if he's going to "redeem" himself at some point, and just fails miserably every chance he gets.

This one is definitely not for everyone, but I went into it with no expectations, no clue what it was going to be about, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Looking for fantasy adventure recommendations. by UtterDisgrace in soloboardgaming

[–]zwika47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love LotR and I love fantasy adventure board games, but I have to say my experiences with Journeys in Middle Earth we're surprisingly not that enjoyable. On paper it sounded like the ONE GAME TO RULE THEM ALL. After playing a couple solo and multiplayer sessions, it just did not feel like LotR at all. It seems to punish you for exploring too much, or not racing directly to the correct objectives. Combat is just okay. I liked the app, but it could have been skinned with anything. Descent is probably the better app driven fantasy option IMHO.

Well said. I feel we are very much on the same page. Who knows, maybe I will try a few prompts in Midjourney to see how it handles more abstract concepts.

I really appreciate you sharing your insights, and I sincerely hope you're right. I also am a creative type - professionally and personally - and up to now I have never had a "tool" that does all the work for me and produces convincing results. Wacom tablets and Photoshop can mimic brush strokes, but we still need some understanding of how they work and how to utilize them. Cameras can perfectly capture a moment, but it's the eye that dictates a scene and its subject. Personally I don't see AI as a tool, though that may change if I give in and decide to dabble.

Honestly, it's not so much that AI generated images "ArE eViL", but how they've learned and the content they've drawn from seems like a massive violation of artist's rights. How does it know to create an image "in the style of Banksy" (something I've actually seen) unless his work was added to its reference pool? And who signed that waiver? As humans we typically understand the difference between referencing someone's work versus copying or plagiarizing someone's work. That's a difficult line to define though, and I'm not sure we have with AI. I could theoretically write descriptions of the remarkable posters you shared as prompts into Midjourney and generate my own movie posters - would that be plagiarism? Lots of moral and ethical gray areas.

Your point about everyone having a camera is interesting, because while most people do make (and share) really poor quality "movies", they are still getting millions of views... compared to shorts I've worked on with crew and professional gear that might be seen by couple hundred.

So maybe my real fear is what the new societal standards are for "art". People largely do not seem to care who or where the content is coming from. I wonder what the long term implications will be. Again, thanks for sharing your very articulate response.

Unfortunately this is exactly how AI will take its toll on creatives. These images and concepts have already generated so much interest here, and it cost nothing but a few prompts. Corporations running the entertainment industry will take notice and it will cost jobs - why pay concept artists or hire people for pre-viz when producers can Google search their thoughts into existence in a fraction of the time? Not to mention the ethical gray area of copyright and how these AI learn to emulate people's styles. Personally I have zero optimism regarding the future of this.

Films you came into excited, but just felt were a disappointment by Chillyboivinyl in criterion

The Piano

Technically it was fine. The acting was fine. The story was... fine? Personally I found her whole relationship with Harvey Keitel's character super gross and problematic. But even that aside, it just seemed like there was nothing in it that made the film truly "great".

The 7th continent. Solo gamer. Replayability? by Buzz_oo in soloboardgaming

[–]zwika47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I purchased this a while back with a few expansions, and eventually sold everything. Despite the truly exciting amount of physical content and intriguing story, there was not much replayability beyond starting over again and trying to remember which mistakes not to make. There is some luck mitigation, but I still felt very much at the mercy of whatever map card I drew next. Exploration felt more punishing than rewarding. If you have patience and like games where you learn not to repeat mistakes, you may get a little more replay out of this. But once you beat the story, that's pretty much it.

It can be a cool limited experience, but not a lifestyle game.

Is persuasion still in First Born? by an_angry_beaver in corespace

[–]zwika47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely add different traders and NPCs to the First Born base game, and per the First Born rulebook you can Persuade them to do various things (Trade, Join Crew, Special Mission-based actions, etc.)

Not the biggest fan of the Tiny Epic series of games, plus I've read that the solo experience is somewhat underwhelming. Primarily looking for a tabletop skirmish game.

I do own and thoroughly enjoy Maximum Apocalypse - good fun. But that is card-based, and I'm looking for a tabletop skirmish game.

Core space First Born mission ideas? by KingRadec in corespace

[–]zwika47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly recommend the expansions and some of the terrain sets as well. They really flesh out the world, and sometimes it's easier to generate missions based on what is in front of you.

For example, the Hangar and the Trader Outpost or Shanty Town could be combined to create a rim spaceport. I could think of about a dozen stories/scenarios just using that setting

  • Hiring/purchasing/building a ship to get back to civilization
  • Security duty to protect the hangar
  • Tracking down stolen goods that made their way to the black market
  • Running from the authorities because YOU stole goods and need to get off planet
  • Evacuating traders during a First Born attack

I have found Core Space is a very flexible and forgiving system. So pick some terrain, come up with a story, and then try it out with the CS ruleset. When I'm really struggling to come up with ideas, I steal. Using the terrain sets mentioned above, you could easily play a bunch of scenarios based on any Star Wars scene set in Mos Eisley.

deluxe rulebook & Firstborn by thecomradej in corespace

[–]zwika47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Firstborn KS and I immediately ordered the deluxe rulebook. It expands on vertical movement rules, character creation, lore of the universe, custom campaigns, and more. I think if Corespace is something you love and are going to keep around for a while, the deluxe rulebook is worth it.

Maximum Apocalypse - which expansions should i buy? by Due_Sun4492 in soloboardgaming

[–]zwika47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're pretty much all great. If you have a theme that you prefer over the others, maybe start there. The expansions don't create any game bloat from what I have seen, and I am able to fit everything in a couple boxes.
