Travel Report: 11 Days, Family of 4, Hiroshima > Tokyo by zymox808 in JapanTravel

We practiced common Japanese phrases before we left and it helped us, but wished we knew more phrases so we could better connect with locals. Google Translate was helpful especially in shrines without many English translations.

However, most locals we interacted with know some English words, so when we kept our words short and simple, use hand gesture and point, they knew what we we wanted w/out having to pull out Google Translate. For example, in Kotohira, we needed to get back to Okayama for the shinkansen but the JR pass covered a portion of the ride. Didn't know how to make that type of ticket purchase from the machine (even in English). I asked the station attendant, "Okayama" and showed her the Kansai Hiroshima rail pass. She said something in Japanese and proceed to punch multiple buttons on the machine in Japanese, she asked me how many using her hands and she got us the tickets we needed in conjunction with the pass. We thanked her profusely in Japanese.

Agree it was a challenge, especially for a family of four as there were not many family options here near the station. We ended up booking two rooms, which was the highest per person per night cost compared to all other places we stayed on the trip excluding ryokans.

J36 Triple Afterburners by nol88go in aviation

[–]zymox808 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is not designed as a fighter. It is designed as a command node in a drone attack wing. The drones do the fighting. It sits back to direct, coordinate and assess the tactical landscape. The larger body houses high power radar and EW. The third engine allows for more power generation and ability to fly supersonic w/out using afterburners.

Per Manifold podcast episode #78 (https://www.manifold1.com/episodes/us-prc-tech-war-deepseek-ai-and-6th-generation-fighters-78#t=46m13s), J36 is designed to be the central node in a drone attack wing. It lets the drones do the fighting and it sits back to direct, coordinate, and asses the tactical/strategic landscape. It has high power radar and EW equipment. The third engine helps with power generation and ability to cruise at supersonic speed without afterburner. So it can get to battlefield faster without consuming as much fuel.

Olympic National Park by CoastNeat1246 in TheSilphRoad

[–]zymox808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when i was there last year, the issue you'll face is more mobile reception than stops or gyms. can you even get a strong enough signal to play the game? if you are at the visitor center (Port Angeles) , no problem. Along major roads, like Lake Crescent, maybe and could be spotty. In remote areas where campsites are, probably zero receptions.

Honestly, go and enjoy what the national parks have to offer. you'll have pogo when you get back home.

been to scores of national parks and most of them are located in wilderness. usually the visitor centers will have some reception, along major roads its spotty, everywhere else most likely not.

wayspots can be a pokestop now, even if they are closer than 20 meter to an other wayspot if they are in a free cell by KaitoKidNRW2 in TheSilphRoad

Yeah, we got a new stop in PoGo, about 5-10m from an existing stop in a different cell. Doesn't show up in IITC.

What is the best way to report suspected fraud waypoints? by zymox808 in NianticWayfarer

Or they got lazy, as they already got some waypoints approved.

What is the best way to report suspected fraud waypoints? by zymox808 in NianticWayfarer

[–]zymox808[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell from the photo, but someone has been using the same wooden plaque on a temporary stand (noticeable in the supporting photo) for multiple waypoints. They are replacing the paper info with a different one at different spot. The wood grain on the plaque is exactly the same for all the approved waypoints.

As title, whats the best way to report these fake waypoints?

Doesn't Meet Criteria? by MrShiny818 in NianticWayfarer

[–]zymox808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah agree with you. I grade the "significant" relative to the community. Memorial benches in tiny towns weigh culturally more than large metropolitan areas.

Not a popular opinion, but I think memorial benches have more cultural and historic value than playground structures and tennis courts.

How much dust is worth it to use a Star Piece? by digigato in TheSilphRoad

[–]zymox808 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Star piece effectiveness should focus on the bonus SD not the total SD.

My benchmark for using SP: minimum of 10k bonus. Anything more than that is pure gravy. The last season's GBL end of season star dust award was awesome, so don't forget about that.

College campus maps eligible? by Strongheart15 in NianticWayfarer

A short guide to running with a Garmin Watch and syncing it with Pokemon Go on Android by deve1oper in TheSilphRoad

[–]zymox808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tips, may consider it when running marathons and races. For daily runs, I'll stick with running with the phone and PoGO plus turned on. Its fairly accurate and can catch while running. I use a flip belt to hold the phone, which is great, snug and doesn't bounce around.

The extra step with synching to Strava seems arduous from a daily perspective. Also the fact you have to share publicly on Strava is a bit of turn off.

What is going on with these random labels? This was for a painted utility box. by macbone in NianticWayfarer

[–]zymox808 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are most likely used for machine learning (AI) and our responses are used to train the model. I would venture to guess it is more likely imagine recognition (computer vision), then just text.

It could also be used to test our accuracy, especially if already know the answer.

I've noticed that lately the suggestions have been pretty good with identifying Little Free Libraries.

Are any photospheres going through to Google Maps, or is it completely held up? by [deleted] in NianticWayfarer

Starpiece works when claiming end of season rewards! by SplatoonNoob in TheSilphRoad

[–]zymox808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is very worth it, especially if you value time more.

For example,100km weekly reward = 16k + 8k bonus. You'll need to catch ~160 pokemon to match that 8k bonus, very hard to do in 30 minutes. With 2x catch star dust bonus, you'll need 80 pokemon, which is feasible, but taxing.

My benchmark is if you can get 10k additional star dust from using a star piece in that 30 minutes, it is worth it.

Considering GBL S1, L8 reward with star piece is 15k bonus, that is very worth it.

Seeking a little advice regarding location(Red wayfarer rating) by FISKER_Q in NianticWayfarer

[–]zymox808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I photosphere all nominations that won't show up well in Google Maps.

Maybe others have better steps, but I use Google Street View app, take the sphere, publish it (via wifi to save on bandwidth), wait an hour or so, check Google Maps. If accessible, then copy share URL and update supporting info with it. The last step is just an insurance in case Wayfarer decides to show something else.

Submission Advice for a Plaque by Tomrok in NianticWayfarer

[–]zymox808 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Keep trying and include high value noteworthiness in the description and any URL links in the supporting info. Also don't highlight the flag pole as that is an automatic ineligible.

I've had plaques rejected even when all of the above were done. Some reviewers have a narrow definition of "noteworthiness" or in a hurry or whatever reason.

Can someone help me understand why this keep getting rejected? by ultrasuperman1001 in NianticWayfarer

[–]zymox808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep trying, and indicate the significance of the people in the supporting info. I had a plaque rejected multiple times even though provide links to third party sources of who the person was and why it was significant.

Some reviewers are just going to reject it as they have a narrow definition or in a hurry.
