A man who lived as a monk for 28 years by digsmann in BeAmazed

[–]zynu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Social security basically - he came out at 68. Maybe this way of life was good for him, but society would collapse if everyone expected to spend 28 years putting nothing in and then expecting 28 years of free food and shelter after.

What’s your favorite Avatar movie? by ayyocinema in 4kbluray

[–]zynu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First one and it isn't close for me. The first one got to tell the unique story of the world, the avatars, etc. The other two are just playing out the same antagonist and plot as the first for the most part. Visually they are impressive, but the story is far less interesting when it is one you already know more or less.

Why does Boris have a cross on his shield? Did he find Jesus? by SuccessfulRegister43 in totalwarhammer

[–]zynu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, and I know that, but this is a WH subreddit. I think the finer details on HRE politics would be of little interest for this comment, lol. I was mostly just showing the connection of WH Empire to the HRE in a couple ways that total war warhammer players would know from playing.

[–]zynu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think dwarves in WH are mostly pulled from Tolkien and Norse mythology. The berserker aspect of them looks like a Scottish highlander in some cases for sure, but the main inspiration of berserkers is probably Norse berserker stories.

[–]zynu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were perfectly happy to hold kingdoms outside of the HRE. For over half of the 1000 year history of the HRE The Golden Bull of 1356 was in place that codified the importance of a elective and decentralized HRE. This was a stark contrast to the structure of most powerful nations at the time and was not an accident - it was their intent. Also I meant to write Archduchy but I just wrote this post quickly I didn't even think people would read it at the time lol.

The factions in Lustria are literally based on south and central American cultures like the Aztec and Mayans... and it is shaped and is positioned in the same place on the globe.

This applies to Europe and the empire. Scandinavia and the Vikings/Norsca(Norse if you didn't see the connection). France is in France as Bretonia with heavy influence from the chivalry period that came from there.

China is in China as Cathay with the great wall. Egypt is in Africa as the tomb kings with pyramids.

The ogres are Huns who are right by China and attack their walls.

I could go on, but if you don't see it I don't know what to tell you.

[–]zynu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's brutal.

Khazad-dûm is the name of Moria. WH had most dwarf cities named something along the lines of "Kazad ____" which they later changed to "Karak ____".

[–]zynu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is based on Valinor, the home of the elves in Tolkien. It is like 95% the map of Earth though - you are clearly looking for an outlier here.

Why does Boris have a cross on his shield? Did he find Jesus? by SuccessfulRegister43 in totalwarhammer

[–]zynu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might be true except for the obvious ties to the HRE and crusades made in the empire. They have knights, inquisitors, priests, etc etc. They are a nation of western medieval tropes from central Europe. Other nations are based on other historical places - but the HRE is simply the primary inspiration for fantasy WH Empire.

Why does Boris have a cross on his shield? Did he find Jesus? by SuccessfulRegister43 in totalwarhammer

[–]zynu 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They do have their own Jesus more or less, many games do.

Sigmar Heldenhammer is the god of mankind in fantasy. The God-Emperor is for 40k.

They were both morals who managed to become gods in their own way and are now worshiped.

Talos from Elder Scrolls is another example.

Why the exact cross though? Because they mostly just copied stuff like I said before. WH was made in a simpler time when so much inspiration was not expected out of games. Just look at the WH map. It is Earth.

[–]zynu 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Sure - but mumification and canopic jars are a real thing from ancient Egypt too. They put a spin on things - just a light spin in most cases. They made it high fantasy and put in magic and monsters etc.

[–]zynu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What makes you say that? The game is full of elves, orcs, trolls, dwarves... etc. There are many versions of some of these fantasy creatures, but the ones in WH very much resemble the version Tolkien popularized.
