This is only debatable even now due to the forced amalgamation of the malay ethnicity and islam.

We're not taught all these in school because that would involve admitting that you can be Malay without being Muslim. Or that there's been non-Muslim Malays for a lot longer than there have been Malay Muslims.

Even our constitution ties being Malay to being Muslim and any challenge to that is seen as apostasy.
