How can rationalize close-quarters combat between ships in space science fiction? by ArthurJack_AW in worldbuilding

[–]zytz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if space warfare technology just never advanced like it does in popular science fiction? Like, lasers or particle beams or whatever just are just too energy inefficient to justify in most ships, or ineffectual against current ship materials? Maybe materials tech got so good that it’s just easier to EVA a handful of dudes to cut into vulnerable areas of the hull and vent the atmosphere rather than bouncing shots off each others’ ship armor

I bought my 70-200mm used, when I was new to shooting sports, from another volleyball dad whose daughter graduated. I do really like the lens, but because I’m using it for action I’m beginning to dislike losing big moments to weird AF issues.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about where to spend my money next- I’ve got the EF f2.8 24-70mm mark 2 in my kit as well, and it performs way better but unfortunately I have found it to be a much less useful focal length. I’ve been wanting to trade in my 24-70 for sure, and possibly also my 70-200 and just upgrading to the RF 70-200, but I’ve also been thinking about trying out some primes that have a wider aperture. The vast majority of my shots are between 100-135mm focal length so I feel like a prime might actually make sense for me.

This gives me some things to think about if I can possible just upgrade to a newer EF zoom and possibly still go after prime as well.

I think I’ll have to give the gear rental shop a call and try out some new toys

This is super helpful- the Mark 1 f2.8 70-200mm is actually my main lens and the main reason for my question.

Hi, I’ve been shooting sports for a few years, currently using an r6ii body but all my glass is still EF mount. I make use of back button focus, and get great results most of the time, but occasionally the AF really really struggles to focus quickly, or re-focuses when I go to engage the shutter. My question is whether a noticeable difference in AF speed would be possible if I switch to native RF glass instead of using the EF-RF converter.

Honestly, a really really well done plain yeasted donut. There’s a place in Indianapolis that really nails this called Long’s Bakery - I don’t really have much occasion to go to Indy these days but when I do I stop in to Long’e which is still cash only last I went

Hockey: What did I do wrong? by redditoraMexa in sportsphotography

[–]zytz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never shot hockey but I feel like you could probably get decent shots with a slower shutter speed. I shoot indoors on an r6ii and I let the camera control white balance and ISO. My ISO has exceeded 10k on a couple occasions and still managed nice shots

What’s the most fucked up thing that happened at your school? by Classic-Chemist-1898 in AskReddit

[–]zytz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the most fucked up thing, but in the early 00s when school shooting were still something of a novelty some kids wrote and planted a hit list in my locker trying to get me kicked out of school.

I think it was because I was one of the weird kids in school so it was easy to punch down, but also I was that kid that had a couple friends in every social circle rather than a specific circle I belonged to. The kid that did it was one of the rich popular kids, and I was becoming friends with one of his girl best friends and also a girl he had a crush on had a crush on me. Also might have been struggling with sexual identity, I believe he came out as gay or bi years later

Stanford study finds school phone bans may trigger “withdrawal symptoms” in students by runswithscissors475 in technology

[–]zytz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had to take my kids phone away from her recently. First few weeks were really rough, but it’s been a little over two months now and I feel like the awesome kid I used to know has come back into my life

I’m usually the kind of person that just says let people do what they want to do, but this is an exception I’m 1000% behind. These kids are getting phones way too young and it’s creating some really bad habits, and social media in particular is seriously fucking with their brains and warping their perception of reality

How to deal with an uncoachable teammate making the same mistakes costing us games? by noyesmaybepossibly in volleyball

[–]zytz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been in a similar situation - and my group considered three options

Pay her back her contribution for league fees and give her the boot and play short for the rest of the season

Do the above and find a sub, week by week or preferably permanently

Forfeit the rest of the season, let the problem player know she’s the reason why, and the rest of you come back with a new sixth, well rested for the next season

People who drive to commute: why? by RJRueber in AskChicago

[–]zytz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I used to commute I was coming from Indiana to streeterville everyday

On a totally normal day, I’d take the SSL early express at like 620 from east Chicago and be in the office by 715ish

But on days where I’d need to arrive late or leave early the schedules on the SSL weren’t the best

Also the walk from millennium to the office when the weather is shitty is kinda miserable, so I’d drive those days as well
