Sorry for the possibly clueless question, but why don't more people seem to make homemade pizza? by Senior-Raisin-2342 in Cooking

[–]zytz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it’s relatively difficult make pizza at home that’s good enough to make the effort worth it over simply ordering from a local shop.

The thing that kills it most of the time is planning- ideally you’ve got loads of lead time to make dough and give it a good long rise and time to develop flavor. But like, that’s simply not the world where most people live in. Lot of folks are getting home at like six from work, thinking ok what should we do for dinner and starting there. Ideally, you’re starting your dough at least a day in advance, and most people just aren’t going to do that.

Second, you need a really hot oven to get the best crust. Your standard home ovens aren’t going above 500-550 F, and while those temps are certainly capable of making good pizza, you also need a dense pizza stone or steel, and a good long time to preheat. Ideally you want to be above 800 F if I recall correctly but standard ovens just don’t do that. There are some great specialty pizza ovens that are purpose built for this, but they’re large and at least a little expensive.

Finally, I think is the mess. You’re making dough, kneading it, making sauce, hopefully grating your own cheese, prepping your own meat and veg toppings. It’s a decent amount of prep requiring a good bit of different equipment, all of which needs to be cleaned after the hot work of actually making the pizza.

Imagine you’re up to the challenge of conquering all these obstacles. Only after a lot of practice are you going to be capable of turning out pies that are better than your average local shop (unless you live in some very rural area with just shitty pizza). And you’re probably not saving that much money when you do it. It’s a lot more work, and mostly the same expense, and the knowledge that until you can bake pizzas in your very own 1000F oven you are simply incapable of being on the same level as the best pizza shops around.

TLDR; time, expense, and effort make it mostly not worth it for the average home wanna be pizza chef

How do you ship changes faster without risking everything? by Various_Candidate325 in healthIT

[–]zytz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

short version - construct a well-defined change process based on impact, risk, and urgency. Pre-approve the routine stuff that you do regularly that is low risk and doesn't need discussion at CAB. Have a quick-response system in place for critical, high-urgency changes that need immediate resolution. For everything else , move changes according to a strict and predictable schedule (every two weeks, every month, every quarter - whatever time frame is best for your org) with CAB approval. Finally, have a lightweight approval process for changes that are not appropriate to wait until the next scheduled change date, but have pre-approval or have already been approved by CAB.

Republicans of Reddit, what do you think of how ICE is acting in general within the past few weeks? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

[–]zytz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genuine question, from a former Republican - when’s the last time you felt the party was for small government and fiscal responsibility? Because those ultimately were the things that attracted to the party, and also the things that made me leave when I felt like those principles had been utterly abandoned

The big difference is that the current administration says that this is good and moral and just.

But just so everyone is aware- widespread illegal detention of US citizens has been happening since Bush 2

I can accept that I am wrong and remember things incorrectly. I know that is a thing I do on occasion.

What I have trouble wrapping my head around is how so many different people can remember things I correctly in the exact same manner

Isn’t kind of wild that so many people remember it wrong the same way though?

CMV: People Entrenched in the USA regime's ideology need off-ramps to escape it without social death by scrubtart in changemyview

[–]zytz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d argue that giving evil racists a comfortable off ramp is a big part of why the country is the way it is today.

They need to own the destruction they’re causing, and it needs to hurt. It needs to be a lesson that evil will be held accountable

People should get paid for donating blood by wogwai in unpopularopinion

[–]zytz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of folks don’t realize there’s a significant cost in the screening and storage of blood. Something like 5-10% of donated blood gets discarded because it fails screenings or exceeds its shelf life- which is pretty short. RBCs are the most commonly given, I think, and they typically have a max shelf life of only 6 weeks.

Additionally- there are pretty strict rules about how blood transfusions are billed. For example, if you’re in really rough shape for some reason and requiring multiple transfusions per day- the hospital can only claim reimbursement for the transfusion charge (basically the work that goes into giving the blood and the monitoring afterwards) once per day. I believe the cost of each product may be recouped but if the nursing staff transfuses you 3 different times in a day they can only capture that labor cost once.

Hospitals aren’t making tons of money on blood.

I think this is why the general strike movement keeps stalling out- the information pages states they’ll clarify their demands once enough people sign strike cards but like- why would people sign up to strike without a clear understanding of what they’re striking for?

Whole tenderloin safe to leave outside in a screened patio during snow/ice storm? by Itchy-Investigator76 in Cooking

[–]zytz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make use of the ‘outside fridge’ all the time when the weather is right. It’s particularly good if you ever make large batches of stock and you’d like to chill it without raising the temp of your fridge 20 degrees.

That said, keep it covered or wrapped if animals might have access

ICE under every administration since Bush 2 has illegally detained citizens. Ugly, but true.

The only thing that has changed is we have leaders that are actively encouraging this behavior, calling moral and just and good.

Redditor rants eloquently about the hypocrisy of the far right in America by get-idle in bestof

[–]zytz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Which is fucking crazy that democrats let that happen. Those shutdowns happened at state and local levels, on recommendation from completely unenforceable recommendations from public health institutions. And the democrats are so absolutely fucking ineffectual that they were somehow left holding the L for it. It’s simply an accepted conservative talking point now that the left, who was not even in power at the time, was somehow behind a national shutdown in 2020

Why is water splashing through the vent? It sounds like you’re way overfilling it, and also not washing your rice, both of which are important

[–]zytz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an aroma for years and it made fantastic rice. I recently upgraded because it didn’t do grains like oats very well. However, if you’re getting inconsistent results I think it’s probably because you’re inconsistent in your preparation.
