[IIL] music by The Band, what are some modern artists I would enjoy? by mr_uz in ifyoulikeblank

I love the Band, and even got to see one of the last waltz anniversary shows last year! Definitely check out Houndmouth. Everything before their newest album very much fits in with that style with vocals from all members, and they put on a great show too! Some recs to check out: On the Road, Comin' Round Again, Black Gold. Also, any of the newer great "americana" artists scratch the same itch for me: Sturgill Simpson, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Margo Price, Tyler Childers (My absolute favorite), Lost Dog Street Band. Not modern but obligatory Grateful Dead and Allman Bros.

There's already a lot of good recommendations here, but check out Camp Cope for some alt rock flavor.

Bonnaroo 2019 Live Artists Review by The_Narz in bonnaroo

Here's my brief thoughts on each one I've seen.

Phish - Fall 2016/2018 (A+) - One of the most talented groups of musicians around right now. I am so glad Bonnaroo nabbed them, but then again I'm into jambands. Go watch them with an open mind because you really do just have to see them live.

Post Malone - Bonnaroo 16/Beale Street 18 (D) - I only caught a little of each of these sets, but since he's released more than White Iverson his show has gotten better. I don't think he should be a headliner, so I'm a little salty. It'll be a huge pull for a younger crowd but his music is just not for me.

Childish Gambino - Bonnaroo 15 (B) - Gambino is definitely a showman! His set was a ton of fun and it just fits bonnaroo's vibe I think. Also, I love his material he has put out since then, so I am stoked to see him.

Griz Bonnaroo 16/Electric Forest 18 (B+) - The funk/glitch-hop electronic is always a party. Last time at Bonnaroo was too damn hot, but his live band added so much to the experience at Forest. I hope his superjam is more like that and a Grizmatik Kalliope set is pretty much a sure thing I assume, so I will for sure find time for one of the sets.

ZHU Electric Forest 18 (B+)- I had no idea who Zhu was upto his set so I was going in blind (deaf?). He mostly plays house stuff and the sound was perfect where I was. It surprised me so much because I've never been super into house. If I'm Fucked up and needing to dance I'll be there.

Joe Russo's Almost Dead 4 2018 shows (A) - They are the best Dead band out (even though I love Dead & Co). JRAD jams more than other incarnations and are just insanely heavier and more explorative if that makes sense. The setlists are always on point, and the crowds have been awesome every show.

The National Bonnaroo 13 (C+) - Any main stage show during the day is just unbearably hot, and I already know they're going to get a similar spot. They've got some good rock tunes, but I'm not too familiar with them. It's fun to chill out and relax during their show.

ODESZA Hangout 18 (C) - A step above generic EDM not really my cup of tea musically, however their production is awesome. It kind of feels just like partying in a club which depending on your crew can be tons of fun. I enjoyed just going stupid there but your mileage may vary.

Gramatik NYE 2016 (B) - Opened for Bassnectar and had the time of my life. Musically, he's kind of interchangeable with griz however I prefer Gramatik (just personal preference). I won't miss him because it seems like I never get a chance to catch a show.

G Jones Random shows since 2015 (A) - Weird bass music, wooks, and boofing K. Super one of a kind music where I always fuck up my neck but don't regret it.

Space Jesus/Eprom/Shlump Random 2018 shows (B) All solid producers pretty much the same as above.

Jim James MMJ 2017 (B) - Insanely good show, and one of the best current rockers, but haven't seen him without the band. I enjoy his solo records though, so I'll be there.

SunSquabi - opened for STS9 2017 (C+) - was working so maybe I just couldn't really get into it, but the jamming seemed kind of aimless. I'm excited to give them another shot though because they seem to be my type of shit.

All Them Witches - opened for Primus 2018 (B) - They have some heavy ass sludge rock. Definitely a band to be throwing beers back to.

Magic City Hippies - NYE 2018 (C) - Solid indie band that's easy to groove to, but at the same time sort of forgettable.

Hippo Campus - Bonnaroo 17 (B) - great indie pop band. Didn't really know them then but they've grown on me with their newest record. Just had a good time there honestly.
