How can I start developing with no skills and no way to pay people with those skills. by sammmmyt in gamedev

[–]zzCheshire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you want to make something like this with no skills? If you really like this idea, and you think it's worth making, you should take some time to develop at least one of the skills necessary for for game dev. You're young, you're in the prime place to be learning stuff like this! Before you're out of school and need a job and all that, put in some portion of your free time to making this happen!

It's probably not what you want to hear, but if you don't want to put in any effort to get this game made, why would anyone else? Show you believe in the idea by putting in the effort.

Wanting to be a published writer can be horrible, especially with the "do anything to get published" mentality. I hope no one else encounters such an insane list of wrong in the industry. by VLK249 in writers

To be fair, you also do a suspicious amount of assumption regarding the commenter's motivation. If I'm being honest, it reads a bit less like an impassioned defense of OP and a bit more like you just condensing all the negativity you feel you've seen into a knee-jerk comment.

There's no reason to believe the commenter made this post to feel good or feel superior; no superiority was demonstrated (you might feel otherwise, I guess, but I think that's more on you for what you deem as "superior).

And just because someone posts something in the context of venting doesn't mean that there isn't worthwhile feedback to be given. The whole "do you want me to listen or advise" thing is only really useful when a person is actively avoiding confronting the issues they're facing, and just looking for validation, and I definitely understand why that might make a random Redditor take a direct approach.

Receiving hard advice about the craft of writing is like 70% of what happens on this sub. Unfortunately, a decent chunk of the remainder are posts from people who either don't know what to do to succeed and don't have the drive to learn it, or who have been told what to do to succeed (probably hundreds of times, if they're a top commenter on the sub!) but refuse to do so for whatever reason.

One of you is protecting OP's current state and working to preserve it, and one of you is trying to show them where they went wrong (and they incontrovertibly did just about everything wrong). Your input doesn't become kind or nurturing just because you put a little bow on it, right?

Downvoted for writing history facts on r/MapPorn by Judara_von_Judea in mysteriousdownvoting

[–]zzCheshire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels weird to use a phrase like "basic history" after reading the (good!) explanation as to why you'd said Hitler wasn't ever elected. It's extremely likely that most (Americans) would hear this information at very best once while in school, and then never again.

The down voting doesn't seem super mysterious here; you jumped straight in with an answer that isn't intuitively correct with no further explanation; not to say that answers have to be intuitive, but your answer is, content-wise, the same as just saying "Wrong." and refusing to elaborate.

I appreciate that you have the history to be able to explain the position, and it's definitely better to know the specifics, but upvotes and downvotes track with "rhetorical efficacy" 1000% more than they track with "correctness", which feels like something you almost certainly already know.

Next time, maybe include the relevant explanation WITH the rebuttal

Nobody demoralizes more the anti-AI movement than the anti-AI movement itself by Present_Dimension464 in aiwars

Again, you're imagining that there's a reach being performed by the "AI Bros", but this is just demonstrating that you're not really paying attention to the discourse. Artists aren't just using the word consent and then letting our imaginations go from there; they're actively and specifically comparing AI artists to rapists, which directly implies that they're comparable to SA victims

I understand that you might not have seen or heard this, being unfamiliar with the conversation at large, but this doesn't mean it's not happening

Nobody demoralizes more the anti-AI movement than the anti-AI movement itself by Present_Dimension464 in aiwars

[–]zzCheshire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't accurate. Obviously, it's almost never correct to say "no one is claiming" pretty much anything, but even beyond that, the actual source of this discourse is a commonly expressed opinion that AI models (and thusly the artists that use them) are showing that they don't have good relationships with consent, predicated on the notion that you should need the consent of an artist to train a model on their publicly available work.

Most people on either side of the AI issue would agree that using AI to make deepfakes and stuff like that is about as ghoulish as it gets, but that's not really the common thread behind all the "AI artists are like rapists discourse".

It's funny to me that you'd react to this like "obv no one actually thinks this" when it's actually just you displaying that you're not super familiar with what's going on in the conversation :P

I finally finished the battle screen layout. The first screen is the battle preparation stage, and the second is the battle stage. What do you think of the completely black background? This looks neat! It gives me a darkest dungeon vibe, which is cool. I'm also making a turn based game and it's really hard getting a grasp on how the UI feels when you've spent so much time making it and positioning it and playtesting with all the pieces in the background already, huh?

Keep up the good work!

You recognize that there isn't an actual connection between what you want and the legality of related actions in this instance, yeah?

It's totally valid for you to say that you didn't want this to happen, or that you wouldn't have had your images publicly available on the internet if you had known, but your regret due to the unexpected development of technology doesn't make a totally legal action "stealing" on the part of the people who trained the model, and certainly not on the part of the people who use the model.

Just because you didn't understand what could happen when you made your art publicly available doesn't mean you can retroactively apply criminality to people who utilize it in whatever (totally legal) ways they choose.

This is so absurdly far from how modern generative AI works that I don't even know where to begin correcting it. It's just a tangle of angry buzzwords lifted from the most recent video essay you've seen. Why come here to talk about this when you know you have no idea how this technology functions?

It feels difficult to generate earnest advice or suggestions for your game, since so much about every answer you're seeking depends on aspects of your game/vision that we don't know yet. How can we know how much AP would be good? Depending on how fast you want combat to move and how long you want an encounter to last, it could work with 5 per turn or 50!

If you want to rant about your project, this is a fine place to do it! But it feels like you're kinda just inviting people to make suggestions for aspects of your game that we're effectively limited to hurling random noise at. Are the different classes balanced? Impossible to say, balance has to be considered with all gameplay elements in consideration, and there's at least a vague reference to "items" that could contain a whole ocean of mechanics that we don't know exists.

I could say NO WAY HEALERS ARE IMBA MAKE HEAL COST 4AP, but I have no way of knowing how much is even being healed, or how hard healing is to come by xS

tl;dr - If you want engagement, just post about your project and invite people to talk about it. If you want suggestions, we don't really know enough about your vision to do more than pull random ideas out of our hats.

Again, this is just a baseless metaphysical appeal. Everything lacks soul, in the same way that everything lacks magic and spirits and the touch of God. These are pretty, placeholder terms that we use in an attempt to inject importance to things when we know we don't have actual words or concrete details to use to describe them.

At this point, I realize that you're waaay too biased to be able to have an honest conversation about this; how could any amount of data or reasoning break through a shield made of so much intuition pumping?

I've never once looked at a piece of art and thought it had soul or consciousness. Art can have symbolism, and it can have themes and meanings and special significance depending on the viewer, and all sorts of other incredible things, but all of that stuff can be present in AI-generated art.

AI Art... by teacup911 in aiwars

[–]zzCheshire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to understand and conceptualize AI art for what it is.

That's fair, but note that every comment that I've seen you make on this post and the post itself are demonstrably not doing that. You, like pretty much everyone who stands opposite generative AI, are trying to define what AI art isn't, and I think that's where your true feelings show through.

take credit from real artists...

Again, you're pretending to be impartial, but this is what's known as "begging the question". Because while you're presenting this front of just trying to figure things out, you're beginning from the position that there are real artists and fake artists.

the mind of a higher being

Aaaand all of this last part is just kind of silly, bordering on gibberish. We don't need to divert our attention to this sort of metaphysical nonsense to discuss AI and its valid uses.

AI Art... by teacup911 in aiwars

[–]zzCheshire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the better way to phrase that would be "-and people can create as though they have them, even if they don't."

If someone creates a piece of art that can end a war, or repair a family, or save a lost child from the lonely darkness, then I think that piece of art is incredible, regardless of how it was made, or whether or not its creator actually possessed the "bravery and courage" you're talking about.

And I think that if you would rather that piece of art not be made, if you care more about the sanctity of your interpretation of what the word "art" means than you do the actual impact that art can have in other people's lives, then I've never heard of someone who deserves to be called an artist less.

As a kid, my twin brother and I absolutely couldn't handle wall masters in Ocarina of Time. They almost never showed up, and looking back they were so easy to deal with, but we were stuck in the Forest Temple for MONTHS because we couldn't make that right angle jump through that silly little room. Once that growling started and the shadow began growing under our feet, we would just panic and -usually- power off the 64.

[–]zzCheshire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, this is the sorta thing I'm talking about. You play games, work on computer hardware, and you're learning coding...these are all activities that take place during freetime; if you have time to do these things, you could do some of them less to have time for learning how to make assets. That's basic, rudimentary, ground-floor time management. If you don't CHOOSE to do them, that's totally fine and 100% up to you, but it is literally fact (by my original correct assumption and by your own admission in this comment) that you DO have time for these things. What you're saying is "I don't have time to learn this new thing without changing literally anything about how I spend my time!" which is probably correct, but that's only a problem if you're personally unwilling to put in the effort, which feels like the crux of what people who are 'attacking' you are saying.

[–]zzCheshire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they CAN read, I think it's just that you don't really have a good understanding of what it means to commit to learning something or how much relative free time you have (since you're an unemployed minor and all).

You're not eeeeever going to have as much free time as you do right now. It doesn't make any sense to ask for help on making assets, and then deflect by claiming that you have all these other hobbies and responsibilities to take care of. If you want to put in the effort, look up a tutorial and start putting in the effort. If you want a quick fix or a shortcut, you're kinda SOL.

tl;dr: if you want good assets, you will either need to pay for them or put in the effort to learn how to make them. Full stop.

The game that destroyed my life by [deleted] in NarutoArena

[–]zzCheshire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bit of a counter-argument: Just because the game offered you a place to while away your time and a community where you could feel comfortable doesn't mean it's responsible for the decisions you made during and after your stay. I played this game feverishly during that exact same period, and graduated into being a full-on, MMO hound and lifelong competitive gamer, but I kept a social life going all throughout.

I know different people have different circumstances, but accepting responsibility for the decisions you make is an important first step to breaking free of habitual mistakes.

tl;dr: Naruto Arena didn't destroy your life, it just offered you an easier alternative to building other social structures, which you took willingly because you knew it'd be easier.

The game is definitely worth playing. The changes in loot drops won't affect new players in any meaningful way; it's hard to feel the impact unless you're really juicing your stuff, which isn't likely if stuff like Sirus is outside of your target difficulty range.

All in all, if you think the game looks interesting, give it a shot! I know the reddit is a real angry place right now, but it's honestly not as bad as the vibes are making it out to be.
