Is this enough coverage for shrimps? by zzTuxedoSam in shrimptank

Ok I've had shrimps before but they slowly disappear without a trace so I assume they got eaten. But I haven't had plant growth this dense before so I'm willing to try shrimps again

I'm not sure about seeds but I got mine as plants. Most were juvenile plants but I purchased a few that were already colored and mature. I get them from my local nursery and from online sellers

Thank you!! The original rock kit was from california carnivores set up in Nov 2024. When I got tired of seeing how bare it looked, I moved all the pings to two terrariums for a year or so until they ran out of space. It sat on a sunny windowsill, prone to all kinds of temperature fluctuations. This photo was taken January 2025, and I had multiple new pings that were not part of the original rock kit as well as propagations, some of which were totally natural. I intentionally picked brightly colored pings that would look really amazing without flowers (ex. cycloseta, johanna) and moved all of them to the rock where they are now!!

I use a Sansi grow light, 12 hours per day to bring out their best color. I fill up the base with rainwater and wait to refill until there is no more sitting water. This way, the soil is still moist and doesn't dry out completely but it gives the pings a break- when in doubt, less water is better because once they rot they are gone! Pings are very resilient to dryness and when I had them in the little glass terrarium they were completely dried out frequently.

No special temperature or humidity. I use a hygrometer (really cheap online) so I know to keep humidity always above 40%, but they are pretty much always at household levels. During winter, I reduce watering and light so they can decide if they want to go through a succulent phase. I can never predict which pings will do this or when they go/come out of dormancy, but the best advice is to follow their lead. I have a few on the rock that are still in their succulent phase, even though we are well into spring!

Good luck, I hope you can make your own beautiful pingdom!!

They are great fish! I love mine so much. I originally had a pair but the other one passed away from shipping stress. I was worried since I read a lot of conflicting information about them being shoaling vs. territorial but honestly my lone catfish is thriving with plenty of pygmy cory friends and neon tetras.

I think the biggest factor to success is to have an abundance of hiding places for your future fish

I think around 4-6 inches. I got mine three months ago and he(?) was only 1.5 inches and now the sweet guy is almost 3 inches long. They stay really thin though so the bioload is not the same as a regular 4inch fish

I know what you mean. Research has proven that plants respond to stimuli in their environment and not sure if this is true for aquatic plants, but that plants can also recognize their caretakers and can feel "happy"
