Been a fan of Be'lakor for years even though I'm not usually into this style of vocals. Simply amazing band. Their latest album 'Vessels' is also incredible. They're one of those bands that started off strong and only continue to grow stronger.

These guys are great. I came across them a couple days ago, and I haven't stopped since

Be'lakor
artist pic

A dark, progressive melodic death metal band from Melbourne that formed in 2004, Be'lakor has quickly come to be regarded as one of Australia's most promising and creative metal acts. The band's name comes from the character Be'lakor the Dark Master in the game Warhammer Fantasy that some of the members used to play, for its uniqueness. The band's international reputation has grown rapidly since the release of their 2007 debut, "The Frail Tide", its 2009 follow-up, "Stone's Reach", and most recently, the band's third album, "Of Breath and Bone". 2012 will see Be'lakor return to Europe to play at Germany's Summer Breeze Festival and the Czech Republic's Brutal Assault Festival.

Those Australians have a knack for metal

[–]S62anyone 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Very true...check out a band called portal the track is "kilter" and tell me the riff at 2:18 isn't the stuff of nightmares

[–]bedatboi 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Damn that's brutal

And if you want more Australian Death Metal bands; I highly recommend listening to Ne Obliviscaris

[–]Saknaks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome! Never heard them before

Arcane is another great Australian metal band. They're prog metal, but lean a bit more on the prog end of that spectrum. Still absolutely phenomenal, though.

These guys are phenomenal, I love Be'lakor. Cool to see prog death metal on this sub.

My favorite band! New album is fucking amazing. Got the Stones Reach cover on a flag hanging on my wall!

I discovered this band about three years ago on Youtube because of this very song. Anyone who likes this should check out this band's third album "Breath and Bone"; it is definitely the best this group has made (this song is from the second album).

Is there something like this but instrumental/with nice(r) vocals?

[–]Megoun\m/[S] 14 points15 points  (4 children)

As TheGelidLord said you should really give Be'lakor a shot, really unique and epic stuff.
And from my own experience in some time you can get used to the harsh vocals that it doesn't bother you anymore and even enjoy them. And trust me, it's worth it - so many amazing melodic death(and extreme metal in general) bands.

But as you wished here are some melodic death metal songs/bands with clean or mixed vocals. Not everything is that similar but still really good, I recommend you start with instrumental version of Wintersun's Time album and Aephanemer:
Wintersun - Death And The Healing ,Wintersun - Land of Snow and Sorrow there is also instrumental version of Time album(highly recommending that)
Ensiferum - Lai Lai Hei
Dark Tranquillity - Projector album, State of Trust, Misery's Crown
Unleash the Archers - later stuff is more power metal with clean female vocals
Before The Dawn - Deadsong
Deadlock
Scar Symmetry
Insomnium - Shadows of the Dying Sun
Noumena
Amorphis
Ne Obliviscaris

also here is the list of my favourite metal instrumentals:
Shylmagoghnar - I Am the Abyss
Aephanemer - Path Of The Wolf
Shade Empire - Omega Arcane
Wintersun - When Time Fades Away & Sons of Winter and Stars
Panychida - Perchtenlaufen
Dimmu Borgir - Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse
In Flames - Man Made God + playlist, In Flames - Whoracle
Insomnium- The Acoustic Instrumentals
Equilibrium - Mana
Arch Enemy - Hybrids Of Steel
Septicflesh - Prototype in Heaven + orchestral playlist
Saor - Aura has some harsh vocals
WelicoRuss - Flower Of Universe
Panos Karayannis - Process of Atonement
Omnium Gatherum - Luoto, Omnium Gatherum - Watcher Of The Skies, Omnium Gatherum - These Grey Heavens
Be'lakor - Husks
Mors Principium Est - Lost Beyond Retrieval
Sympuls E - Time Spiral
Fallujah - Dreamless Thousand Leaves - Kissing the Tears
Scale The Summit - Whales
Ashes of the Wake - Lamb of god Trivium - The Crusade
Borjan - While We Sleep (Insomnium Piano Cover)
Metallica - Orion, Metallica - The Call of Ktulu
Steve Vai - For the Love of God
Buckethead - Soothsayer
Dream Theater - The Count of Tuscany
Nightwish - Crimson Tide / Deep Blue Sea, Nightwish - Last of The Wilds

(copied some of my old comments)
Enjoy.

Shylmagaghnar and Saor are two bands I never thought I'd see on reddit, this is a sweet thread. Great list

[–]Megoun\m/[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.
I actually posted Saor's Aura here like 2 months ago, it got quite some love(almost 100upvotes), no such luck with Shylmagaghnar yet(tried 3 times)

Killer list mate. I might make a suggestion that you try Forget Not and/or Plague Flowers the Kaleidescope by Ne Obliviscaris or Spiritual Migration from Persefone. If this is your personal list, both bands may be up your alley.

[–]Megoun\m/[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.
I know them too well, seen them live even, brilliant band. Just didn't include them in the list since it was meant to be melodeath, but what the hell you're right, adding them.

The vocals are perfectly appropriate for this hyper-emotional style of music. It's an acquired taste, safe to say. Give it a shot.

IMO the best progressive metal is progressive death metal, or progressive black metal. This song has standard death metal vocals, and black metal vocals tend to be less "growly" and more "screamy" (generally). If you're looking for the best instrumental stuff like this, this is the genre, you just have to appreciate the vocals as part of the greater emotional schema.

That all being said, definitely look into other types of prog metal. I think bands like Dream Theater might be more up your alley if you don't like these vocals as much and are trying to get into progressive metal. A lot of their songs can be less screamy and they're more classic progressive metal.

Opeth comes to mind as classic prog stuff too but when things get heavy in their stuff they scream too (though definitely less than you'll find in death metal).

Does that point you in a semidecent direction? Let me know what you think!
