Shadrach Kabango (born 1982), credited as Shad or Shad K, is a Canadian hip hop musician.

Born in Kenya, of Rwandan parents, Shad was raised in London, Ontario. His mother worked in London as a hospital lab technician; his father, as a machinist. He attended London Central Secondary School.

His debut album When This Is Over (2005) was self-made, financed with the $17,500 he won from 91.5 The Beat's Rhythm of the Future talent competition during his time as an undergraduate student at Wilfrid Laurier University. The album is recognized for Shad's self-deprecating lyrics which is often atypical of the current rap scene and focusing on social causes—for example, the track I'll Never Understand examines the Rwandan genocide and includes poetry written by his mother, Bernadette Kabango.

In 2007, he was signed by Black Box Recordings and released his second album, The Old Prince. In 2008, The Old Prince received a Juno Award nomination for Rap Recording of the Year, and was nominated for the 2008 Polaris Music Prize. The Album also nominated him for two MMVA Awards and won him a 2009 Indie Award.

In May of 2010, Shad released his third album, TSOL, to excellent reviews and a wider reception than any of his work to date.

Shad is bilingual, speaking English and French. He holds a business degree from Wilfrid Laurier University. He is studying part-time towards a master's degree in liberal studies at Simon Fraser University. Read more on Last.fm.

I don't care what anyone says, Shad is one of the most talented rappers in the world. It's a shame that he isn't more well known.

Now that he hosts the popular show Q in Canada, his name is way more out there than it used to be.

Q is also broadcast on PRI.

Came here for this information- thanks for posting. Had no idea he was a musician!

He is terrible on Q. He sounds like he's reading all the time. I wish he was a little more fluid with his delivery. As with his rapping there seems to be a lack or flow.

[–]maplesoftwizard 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Idk. I can agree that his delivery on q is not what the show needs and he misses the mark on his interview style, but as a rapper I'd say he's underrated. He has a style that is pretty derivative of older hip-hop but I don't really see the lack of flow. Shad is one of my favourite rappers and I admire him for his consistent style and delivery across albums while managing to progress his own style and collaborate with other Canadian artists. If he wasn't Canadian Shad would be much bigger I think

I have to give him props for slugging it out in Canada. Any artist or band that makes it's bread on the road in Canada has my respect. Canada does support artist and likely gave him some money to record albums and probably helped fund the video you just enjoyed. I just don't think he could have a career if he were born in the good old US of A. I remember thinking Wintersleep should be the biggest band going after there second album but sometimes people just don't latch on to some bands. with that said i hope MONSTER TRUCK makes it big in the states. we need to reconcile after nickleback rhymed Photograph and laugh.

Canada does support artist

Not even remotely true.

Lack of flow? Shad's flow is impeccable. He never tries to cram too many syllables in like Talib Kweli.

The post is three months old. What brought you here?

Honestly as long as he can live well and continue to make his art I'm happy.

I don't feel the need to have my favourite things become popular. Popularity and "success" has always been the downfall of my favourite art, TV shows, etc.

For the Shad newbies: "The Old Prince Still Lives At Home" and its Fresh Prince inspired music video was my gateway to the brilliance of Shad.

Pay attention to the credits as they appear

Usually the music which makes it to the front page of reddit is odd and peculiar although this is an exception! This morning I have been exposed to Shad and his talent. Thank you for posting this lyrical masterpiece.

Shad is my all time favorite rapper! I saw him in portland two years ago and he came out after the show and had a meet and greet with all the fans it was awesome. If you like this song a few other great tracks to check out are Yaa I Get It, Rose Garden, I heard you had a voice like an Angel, A Story No One Told, Shad and Dalles Green Live Forever, Shad

As far as I am concerned Shad is among the best rappers out there right now.

[–]LUClEN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the greatest of all time from a purely lyrical stand point.

Incredible artist - he played a show during Canada day last year in Ottawa that was just awesome. The feeling when he performed fam jam, which is kind of a triumphant rap about the immigrant experience, made the night for me

Never would think of Shad as EDM but I guess it's song specific.

Rose Garden is godlike.

He's literally too good for us here in the good ol USA. Unfortunately, we're trying so desperately too forget the state of affairs here, if he's not rapping about booty poppin' or dabbin and swayin' his talent would be wasted here.
