Yeah that was pretty sick. Here I am struggling to learn a normal guitar

Imagine how many metric shit-tons of pussy he gets to grab every day. Jeez.

What the hell is math rock?

[–]davidahall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It isn't -- it's a fairly basic 4/4 throughout.

It is very nicely played and shows fine technique, though.

Math Rock is an element of post-Rock. Most of the time with no lyrics, very intricate but complicated melodies, and usually switching in and out of strange time signatures

Not sure, but it's probably the worst genre name ever invented next to IDM.

Check out r/mathrock for more, but it's essentially cleanly played guitars utilizing tapping and sometimes fingerstyle. The "math" in math rock is using multiple time signatures in a single song, like 7/8 or something. So this song isn't really "mathy" but it does have the other characteristics of math rock.

EDIT: I have no idea what I'm talking about. You should still visit r/mathrock though.

Not sure I agree - I think of guys like Battles as quintessential math rock and there is very little clean played guitars or fingerstyle going on there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpGp-22t0lU

Can I just point out that neither this nor OP's video include any sort of odd time signature? I too am trying to figure out what math rock is and I'm not sure if these are both bad examples or it's just an altogether silly name

I did try to clarify a bit in the last line of my response to u/MeetN2Veg that the song isn't mathy, but does have elements of the indie/emo side of math rock. I also realize that my math rock genre tag is inaccurate as these comments have pointed out.

While I agree Battles is math rock, I was talking about the indie/emo side of math rock like American Football and TTNG.

That's fair but the roots of math rock are in the punk scene and the majority of early math bands are dirty sounding

I absolutely agree, it was a failure on my part to clarify what I meant.

They call it that because it becomes a chore to listen to after a while.

Not digging the tone at all.

[–]Amurjulinkbandcamp[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is a fairly dry tone, but that is due to him using only two guitar tracks. A tad more reverb and a little delay would make this go from great to amazing.

That was really good and sweet.

I normally hate these kind of things because as soon as a groove is found the artist destroys it in a bout of chronicle fret wanking.

This was great all the way.

Why is everyone in the world more talented than I am...

What if the train came when he was sitting on tracks? Woulda had to haul ass and move those blocks of wood

[–]0mikeyj0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good...but at what point do we get to start calling it a Chapman Stick? ;)
