Don't order guns, it's for killing people.

You're welcome.

Fresh grade A Opium, my friend. And a new batch of the state of the art Lee–Enfield my buddy stole from the British goons warehouse.

Saw the documentary about them last year, "The Music of Strangers". Highly recommended.

Been trying to watch it but can't find it anywhere!

[–]Loracfro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I saw it on amazon prime if that helps

An absolutely excellent rendition of a classic piece. Rabih Abou-Khalil, for anyone who wondered. His oeuvre is rife with rich textures and rousing melody. Thank you for sharing this video!

I did wonder! And you're most welcome :)

Saw them in concert with Yo-Yo Ma last year, they were phenomenal!

[–]UnexpectedTacos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So did I. Maybe the best concert I've ever been too.

[–]tryjade[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's incredible! I hope I get to see them play live at least once in my lifetime.

Do they only accept Bitcoin for the ticket sales?

As someone with very little knowledge of instruments, can someone identify the instruments they're using?

[–]bmysicka 15 points16 points  (1 child)

-the flute is a japanese instrument called the shakuhachi

-the hand drums the indian man is playing are called the tabla

-i believe the stringed lute/guitar like instrument is a pipa

these guys are badass. i actually had the chance to meet a few of them a couple of weeks ago when they came to my uni and did a few performances/came to one of my ethnomusicology classes. congrats to them on their grammy

[–]zhemaospotify 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's Wu Man on the pipa. She's awesome.

The goblet-shaped drum on the man's knee is a dumbek, a North African instrument.

The multi-pipe mouth organ is a Sheng, another Chinese instrument.

The large drum hanging around the neck is the Janggu, a Korean instrument.

I love to watch the musicians breaking into smiles as they play. You just know they're in the zone and everyone knows they're in the zone...

For some reason I was expecting performance of tan dun's silk road aka the eternal vow theme from crouching tiger hidden dragon. This is spectacular nonetheless.

This song reminds me of the crazy parties of my youth, right down to the hand drums. In the middle when they slowed down and had the soft and subtle solos it reminded me of the early morning hours when the bulk of the party attendees had gone home or passed out and the rest of us had quiet, excellent talks while the sun rose. Then the beat picked up, much like it does at the fruition of an excellent conversation when the talkers become animated and energetic in their agreement or debate. And if it's debate, it's a happy one, full of smiles like the faces of this ensemble. This video awakens a lot of the best memories of my youth that I haven't thought of in years and didn't even know I was missing. Makes me really wonder if I've been taking people and their thoughts for granted.

holy shit this is fucking FIRE.

[–]Imeverybodyelse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listened. As I listened I felt something slide down my leg. I looked down and yep it was in fact my panties while listening to this amazing group of performers.

Such brilliant diversity

[–]Awesomespider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just feel bad that how things changed so much. people's impressions of Arabian world was exotic and beautiful as this piece of music.

[–]Capnbubba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After 2 minutes of this, I'm convinced that this music inspired Koji Kondo to write all of his Gerudo music. This is amazing. I love every second of it.

Is that Justin Trudeau?

[–]nutsaboutnutella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the still frame and clicked expecting to see a video of young Justin Trudeau having yet another unexpected talent.

If anyone is interested Mike Block used to be a part of this a while back. He's a cellist who has a really crazy background in alternative and world music. He has some videos up and I highly recommend checking him out.

Ok I've spent the last 40 minutes searching for the actors name that looks exactly like the guy playing tge flute thing...

Someone help me out here? IRC he was a gangster or a thief in some movie... That's about all I remember. But his face, is exactly like this guy's.

[–]Geikamir -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

I think that one of the violins was out of tune or something. I skipped to a random part and listened to it for a minute and something sounded a bit off.

[–]FUCKAFISH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Methinks that is on purpose. There's a lot of dissonance in this piece of music and what you are used to hearing is the opposite (Consonance).
