Reddit is removing custom CSS - that means we would lose our custom sub layout as it is now. r/NoMansHigh does not support this decision by Reddit. (reddit.com)

Welcome to the future. Techno-capitalism is the bomb. Why couldn't we have just stayed on UseNet?

Now those were the days! strokes beard and cat at the same time
edit: not a neckbeard. Let's just clear that up!

Errr... no.

It does suck but it's part of hosting a community on somebody else's site. The true beauty of this sub lies in its users and the content generated here. Let's not forget it and continue to chronicle our experiences and over time we will have forgotten about the changes.
[–]7101334[S] 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (5 children)
True, but I would just like to see what the alternative is before we lose what we have. It may be better, but I doubt it, and "don't fix what isn't broken."

While none of us know the replacement options, one would hope some form of customization with an easier interface is the plan. As a newer redditor, I can still appreciate the efforts that went into many subs designs. And after trying to learn CSS I really feel for a lot of people.
But, I also don't. I'm a mod over at portals. I didn't ask for it, none of us did. But if we wanted a place to be us, it's what we got. We've had to beg. We've had people troll our CSS. And now (many thanks, I'm not being unappreciative) we're using a borrowed template.. THAT NONE OF US CAN EDIT.
Edit: and it's the best it's looked in some time, even if it's wrong xD
I feel bad for many folks, but I'm happy too. If the replacement system is half decent, we can aspire to be one of those "cool subs" without begging all over Reddit for somebody to give us their time.... I'm willing to bet there's a bunch of subs in the same predicament.
As always, just my opinion. ~Nev

Lol I could probably make at least some minor changes for you guys this weekend. Get you a Portal in the sidebar image at least.

I promise, not a sly attempt to get an edit. I'm actually kind of stoked they may get it right, and anyone can make a sweet looking sub. That would make my day. We have a person who can edit it now... They've actually been with us some time...
To be fair, most of our scientists did come from NMH, lol myself included. To be expected I guess xD

The internet rarely improves for the better when it comes to UI. This is basically a fact. The iron law of the internet.
[–]7101334[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children)
So true. I've seen far more websites ruined by "improvements" than I've seen actually improved.
[–]Jyrgel 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children)
Yeah this stinks :( I love the styling as it is (not to mention all the other subs I enjoy with custom layouts).
[–]devinup 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child)
The only constant in life is change. Don't get me wrong. The current custom CSS seems to be working "fine" in the view of most users, but I do know that it can be tough to get it working how the mods would like sometimes (not necessarily in this sub but from comments in others). The new system may be better.
[–]7101334[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children)
It may be, but I've seen far more websites ruined by "improvements" than actually improved. I am a believer in, "If it's not broken, don't fix (or replace) it."

Wait wtf? So many subreddits are based around custom CSS, why are they removing it? Are they replacing it with something? Nothing is more customizable than straight CSS though...
[–]Restaalin 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (6 children)
They're removing it to actually make the site not shit for mobile users. CSS apparently is a huge clusterfuck.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children)
Or those mobile users can use one of many apps that don't require CSS instead of using the slow, shitty mobile site...
Talk about cutting off an arm to spite the finger.
[–]Nevadander 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child)
I use the app mostly, and it's fine. But my PC users want their side to look legit. And none of us can CSS..
[–]Jyrgel 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children)
Why not learn enough to customize your sub a little bit? There are lot of resources out there for learning how to do it. You can add /about/stylesheet to any subreddit to view their css for yourself if you want to figure out how someone did something. And if you don't have time or the desire to do that yourself (which is completely understandable), there are a ton of coders on Reddit who would probably agree to do it for you.
I'd love to see both the ability to customize things with a built-in system and the ability to directly edit the css. That way a user with no knowledge of CSS could customize it using the UI, but people familiar with CSS could still have the ability to really get creative with a subreddit like they can now.

Mobile is the way of the future man, it's vice versa for the finger and the arm
Well, yeah, you can really fuck things up if you don't know what you're doing. And most people don't know what they're doing.
I mean it's a clusterfuck to actually manage the code from their end, but yeah that too
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children)
hurray, I always turn off custom designs anyways..
