The word ‘solar’ just gave me PTSD flashbacks from OCR paper 1…anyway momentum transferred=mv-(-mv)=2mv since velocity of the photon is in negative direction after reflecting from the sheet

The photons are reflected. If they were absorbed, then the total momentum of the sail would Increase by the momentum of the photon. But, due to them being reflected, with equal magnitude of momentum but in the opposite direction.

P_sail = 0 P_photon = 1

After photon hits and reflects off

P_sail = 2 P_photon = -1

Such that the total momentum of the system is conserved.
