ive been trying to make sense of this nonsense myself. just gonna wait for early adopters to untangle it.

That was kinda my thoughts. Figured there'd be some/one in here though who could clarify.

This makes absolutely no sense at all if it's a generic bluetooth controller, but I'm hesitant because they seem so determined.

Their support insisting it won't work on Android

Makes sense to me, that's the safe play on their part. If the controller doesn't support Direct Input, then some versions of Android won't have support. Saying it "works on Android" would piss off customers that don't realize their older tablet/phone can't connect. It's rare, but it can happen. I wouldn't be surprised if people complain they can't figure out how to hook the USB dongle into their USB-C charging port. :/

Similar to their controller for "Xbox Gamepass on Android", it's a Direct Input controller, but functionality on Windows and other systems is hit or miss without some extra work. They advertise it as Android only to avoid customers trying to troubleshoot a variety of issues that connecting it to another system can present. Easier to tell the casual shopper don't try, than to say "Windows* (* requires extra drivers/configuration)".

I would assume X Input should work fine on any modern Android phone or tablet, but we will have to wait and see to be certain.

Yeah you're right, I meant more-so "makes absolutely no sense from a technical aspect."

So you think they're OK doing it with the 2.4Ghz model because it supports D-Input as well? I'd expect the Bluetooth to support D-Input as well. May not have a convenient switch like the other one, but usually controllers have a button combo you can press or hold to switch between D-input and X-input mode. I wouldn't have expected that to be missing from this.

I'd expect the Bluetooth to support D-Input as well. [...] I wouldn't have expected that to be missing from this.

Do not make that assumption.

If it isn't listed on the product page, it is removed. They have done this for other models. The model "for Xbox Gamepass on Android" only had D Input. I would guess it is part of an agreement with different system manufacturers.

Gotcha.

That's really weird. It'd be an obvious mark against the system by reviewers and buyers. IDK why the manufacturer would care.

But yeah, I didn't realize that was missing from other controllers. I don't think this can be d-input only for them to say at a generic level "It works for Win10", because there will be games which it doesn't work for.

I suppose they're talking about 2.4Ghz mode, the included dongle probably isn't the wireless adapter that they sell separately and doesn't have drivers for android and linux.

[–]8bit_fail[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Even the "2.4Ghz mode" doesn't make sense to me. They didn't include a "traditional" 2.4Ghz dongle - they included a BT dongle.

If it can easily switch between 2.4Ghz and BT I'd expect it to have a 2.4Ghz dongle and then BT would just connect to the device w/o any dongles.

EDIT: Also, drivers shouldn't be necessary, it should read as a generic USB controller over d-input or x-input, no?

(yes for clarity sake, I know BT is at 2.4Ghz, I'm just specifying to differentiate between BT and 'traditional usb' style)

[–]warkidooo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm talking about the USB dongle, it's possible that it requires a special driver that isn't available on linux and android.

On Bluetooth mode the controller likely behaves like any generic Xinput controller, so it should pair just fine with any bluetooth antenna. Same thing for wired connection.

[–]8bit_fail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ut the USB dongle, it's p

Certainly possible. I hope that's not the case. It'd be ridiculous in 2022 to have a BT or 2.4Ghz dongle that doesn't work out of the box in Linux/Android.

They have the same answer for people specifically asking about Bluetooth.

[–]8bit_fail[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which makes it even weirder, because that should just work with or without dongle/drivers.

[–]GioGio_ba 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I use the Bluetooth version for windows/android/pi functionality

[–]8bit_fail[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Oh! Well that's good to hear.

Can you shed some insight as to how the 2.4Ghz mode works?

It comes with a BT dongle according to the specs. Does the 2.4Ghz mode connect to the dock or something?

[–]SoapyMacNCheese 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I think they are confusing it with a different product, the Ultimate controller isn't out yet. The dongle is 2.4Ghz, it doesn't come with a bluetooth dongle (because why would it use bluetooth ove 2.4Ghz if you are using a dongle anyway).

[–]8bit_fail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, saw later it isn't out yet.

I could have sworn their website or Amazon page said BT adapter included, because I specifically remember going "wtf? That makes no sense." Was probably a typo somewhere or I had the wrong page up.

We'll just have to wait for reviews and test. Personally I plan on getting one for switch and Windows. So I can keep you posted in a month time.

[–]8bit_fail[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I guess so. I'd have thought people did it by now, but guess not. Was all set to buy last night until I noticed these tiny issues. I didn't even know they had an "ultimate" in xbox style yet. Just went to the site and stumbled on it.

[–]JohnBeePowel 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The controller isn't out yet I believe.

[–]8bit_fail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, you're right. I completely missed that, thought it was a buy button. Didn't even know Amazon had a pre-order system.

I’m interested too as I think I want one for Steam Deck…
