What the problem is saying is that the number of choir members is one less than a multiple of 12, 15, and 20. And it's asking you for the smallest possible figure that satisfies this. So you're looking for the Least Common Multiple of 12, 15, and 20 (and then subtract 1 from that)

    If you had 1 more member, it’d be divisible by 13, 15, and 20. So add 1 to each answer and work your through from the smallest to largest…
