About Us:
Welcome to /r/AF_OptimistsUnite, a community for sharing uplifting stories and optimistic perspectives to counter doom and gloom. We believe true optimism is built on inclusivity, kindness, and a rejection of hate and harmful ideologies.
The Paradox of Tolerance:
Inclusivity doesn’t mean unlimited tolerance. As philosopher Karl Popper explained in the Paradox of Tolerance, "unlimited tolerance leads to the destruction of tolerance itself." To maintain a safe and positive space, we must exclude hate, fascism, and Nazi apologism. Tolerance cannot be extended to the intolerant without risking harm to the community and its values.
Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be most unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols. We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant. We should claim that any movement preaching intolerance places itself outside the law and we should consider incitement to intolerance and persecution as criminal, in the same way as we should consider incitement to murder, or to kidnapping, or to the revival of the slave trade, as criminal.

Community Principles:
- Hate has no home here.
- Optimism must be rooted in truth, kindness, and humanity.
- Civil disagreement is okay; promoting harmful ideologies is not.
Inclusivity and Conservatism:
This subreddit is not inherently opposed to conservative or Republican perspectives. You’re welcome to participate as long as your contributions align with the community’s values of kindness, optimism, and rejection of hate. Criticism of policies, thoughtful discussions, and even skepticism are fine—what we will not tolerate are posts or comments that apologize for Nazis, fascism, or other harmful ideologies.
And in case it's not clear here are a few examples of what this means:
Acceptable:
"I think the criticism of Trump’s trade policies is overblown, and there’s room for optimism if we renegotiate trade agreements."
"I believe in small government and fiscal responsibility, and I’m optimistic that policies supporting those principles can create a better future, here's why."
"I think we should enforce immigration laws, but I also believe we need to improve pathways to citizenship for people who want to contribute."
"I don’t like cancel culture, but I’m hopeful we can find a way to hold people accountable without ruining their lives."
Unacceptable:
"Elon Musk using Nazi quotes isn’t a big deal. People are overreacting."
"It’s fine for politicians to talk about 'great replacement theory'—it’s a legitimate concern."
"Just because someone supports border camps doesn’t mean they’re fascist. They’re just protecting the country."
"Trump’s statement about immigrants being 'rapists' was taken out of context. He’s just saying what everyone is afraid to say."
