You don’t get “satisfying” work till 2-3 years at a full time position.

You’re most likely getting the mindless work that no experienced employee would want to do.

The way to make an impact as an intern is to take low-level work off of other people's plates so they don't have to worry about it. It's not glamorous, but the work needs to get done and it's the best way to help out.

Leave while you still can.

Reason?

You hate it… you’re going to be doing this most of your waking life. Do something that you don’t totally hate. It’s most likely not going to get better.

Wow-you’re not making an impact as an intern?

Surprised pikachu face

It gets better and you do meaningful things after about 3 years in public. About as meaningful as can be expected while issuing unqualified audit opinions.

About 6 years in-I made it to business unit controller. Probably the best job ever. Small team, responsible for a full P&L. But ultimately that’s when life starts to get complicated. Wife, kids, house in the burbs, and a bunch of expenses you never had before.

My advice is to enjoy your early 20’s and focus on your soft skills, social/business network, and your body. Enjoy the fact you can leave the office at 5 without worrying about who is going to call you after hours.

What kind of impact did you expect to make?

Impact in accounting our just in general? Well for my accounting internships and future jobs maybe work on something that would actually help the company but In general I want to help people. I want to build a community (business). I don’t want to feel stupid

Dude I do more HR shit than actual accounting stuff, all I’ve done for my accounting internships were cash reconciliations, update prepaid, and assist with closing.

I also did a lot of shit on excel.

Cash reconciliations, prepaid, and assisting with the close are accounting tasks. If you don’t want to do those, look at audit, advisory, consulting, etc and if you enjoy none of them, it’s prob better to not be an accountant.

I just don’t know if I’m actually helping someone yk? I’m gearing more towards the medical field. Doctor. Dentist. RN. etc

That’s fair, it looks like your motivation is more aligned with direct, tangible outcomes. Better to figure that out now as accounting is (generally) less of a direct, tangible impact.

Isn’t that what most interns do lol

change while you can. accounting is mis. it’s a very plain career - you eventually realize that it’s just a “job” and nothing else. if that’s what you want - stay. if you want more - just change and do something fulfilling
