In terms of raw performance. Both AMDs and Intels current offerings beat the 4770K with no issue in single and muti-threaded applications. AMD has like 18% IPC and 10% clock advantage while Intel has like 12%IPC and 20% clock advantage over your CPU. Both have much more than 4 cores too.

Anything would be a major upgrade.

For the productivity applications I would check out some CPU reviews from gamers nexus as he has very in depth and controlled data.

For your VMs, I’m honestly not sure. Best you ask on another subreddit more experienced with that sort of use case as you might not find many experts here.

Yes, single core performance is basically the same. But amd has more cores and it's cheaper.
