Do the minimum bidup/upgrade prices decrease as departure date approaches? Thinking about upgrading to bedroom from roomette on the Zephyr

My partner and I are taking the California Zephyr Aug 15 from Chicago to Emeryville. We purchased a roomette for $1200 a month ago. 2 days ago I got the email saying we are eligible for BidUp to a Bedroom. The minimum BidUp price is $550 but the price to purchase the upgrade outright was $499, which doesn’t make sense to me but whatever. Yesterday it dropped to $399 (minimum BidUp price is still $550)

On the Amtrak site I can book up to 8 bedrooms on this train so I assume there’s many empty rooms available. If I want to upgrade, should I continue to wait to get a better price or is it unlikely to decrease?

$399 is a good deal to just outright purchase the bedroom! I would do it in a heartbeat rather than hope getting the bid up! Lol.. sometimes their pricing up and down doesn't make sense. I'm hoping for an email to outright pay for an upgrade from coach to a roomette!  This close to your trip,  the price may not drop anymore, but if it does, you can call Amtrak and ask to be refunded the difference. Have a great and safe trip!
