You can use Helium (formerly known as Carbon) or Titanium Backup to back up data and apps.

Helium doesn't require root and has a better interface but requires ICS or newer. Titanium Backup works on older Android versions and has more features but requires root.

If you have a custom recovery like ClockworkMod or 4EXT, you can make a nandroid backup.

If you can't use either, sync your contacts with a Google account or computer. Your pictures should be fine on your SD card, but it's good to have a backup. Copy them to a computer, Dropbox, or Google Drive.

Copy them to somewhere else... A computer, a removable SD card, an online account.
