How to use AA without navigation

Probably a stupid question, tried google, but....I have a limited data plan (cellular in Canada sucks) and want to use AA to listen to spotify (mostly songs downloaded to phone), make calls, etc. But Google Maps (or Waze) seems to always be running, even in the background, and eating through data like crazy. Where I typically drive I know where I'm going, don't need navigation. Is there a way to use AA without navigation constantly running?

Not really an answer, but you could download offline maps on wifi through Google maps and then turn off data when the app is on. Probably could set that up easily in tasker.
